The way grandma was speaking english was the way the plantation workers from different ethnicities talk to each other = pidgin. Though through time the language has evolved into what we have today. It shouldn't be classified to jus polynesians (and Hawaiians themselves) in Hawaii speaking it rather, the communities as a whole. I mean jus go to the neighbor islands - really heavy pidgin with literally with everybody from different ethnic backgrounds speaking it.
