Here’s a tip from a scale modeler as far a s masking the side trim goes. Lay your tape on the area you want to mask, work the tape into the lip with q-tips and wood skewers or toothpicks. You then use a sharp x-acto knife to cut tape along the edge. It’s time consuming but probably not three hours worth.
@PiDsPagePrototypesАй бұрын
Alternative Method, used silicon as the masking agent, spread over surfaces, and an Xacto to trim away the excess before painting, then peel off the mask after.

Someone probably already commented . . once your part is ready for paint, you can "mask" raised fins (or letters or logos) by carefully applying Vaseline to the raised surfaces with a cotton swab, so the paint wont stick to the raised stuff . . Or you spray tge paint and immediately wipe the raised areas with a no-lint rag
@aussiegonzАй бұрын
Vaso was my first thought, probably wouldn't make a perfect straight edge but you could go close leaving the connecting edge the only thing to do, reducing the time spent to a quarter or less.

I don't think most people realize how time consuming car restorations can be, it is exactly why it's so expensive if you're paying someone to do it, especially all those little things like that trim restoration. I have a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II and had to repaint all the side trim, headlight bezels, trunk finish panel, etc... Thing is it wasn't just black paint, it was also textured silver with satin black, it took forever.

A tip from the scale model making community: Liquid masking. The model makers use a liquid mask for aeroplane canopies. Plus they use a masking putty when doing intricate camourflage etc. Both could've been used on those parts, whatever they were to mask off the chrome. When the paints dry, just like on a model, simply peel away the mask just like you would masking tape. But, you've done it now, and you'll know for next time. Cracking mota.

Blue fine line masking tape is available from many sources in different widths. 3M to China, it is readily available. Custom painters use it to make curves and outlines, even pin stripes. Even Amazon sells varieties of it. I would never paint the inside of an oil pan for fear of dried paint coming off and getting into the works. Totally unnecessary. Hi Sarah! Yes I am putting in my 2 cents If at all helps for next time. If you ever have to mask something that detailed then clean it as you usually do then mask the area you don't want painted by using grease and applying it with a small paint brush like from an art store. After spray painting and fully dry then it's just a matter of wiping it off with a rag. 😁I hope it helps

While painting the inside of the oil pan looks awesome, make sure that the paint used won't "break down" over time in the presence of petroleum (oil), and leach into the engine's oil, potentially degrading it. Worse yet, without perfect adhesion a section could flake off, blocking the oil pickup. Just a couple thoughts that may or may not be a valid concern for you. You'll have to decide. Absolutely LOVE the work you do! You are the definition of passionate obsession produces perfection.
