So this was a novel with a full glossary and appendices full of ecology and politics and history. There are six by the original author and two in the main story by the author's son. The son also wrote over a dozen volumes of expanded universe building in story form. The glossary contains a lot of middle eastern terms. Also, in the sixth book there are actual jews hitchhiking through space.

to be fair, Dune was heavily inspired by very real research into history, ecology, religion, and politics. Hebert was pretty clear that many of the themes are based on real world events and situations, namely the wars over oil in the middle east as well as middle eastern cultures. In fact, the movie calls it a holy war, but the books call it a Jihad.

The bull motif is intentional. The Harkonnen family and surname originated in Finland (in the 20th century, there is indeed such a surname in the form Härkönen). In Finnish, the word härkä means bull. The Atreides had been fighting the Harkonnens (their enemies) for centuries. Thus, bullfighting is synonymous with fighting the Harkonnens (a real war with the Harkonnens was out of the question for political reasons). The giant bull head that the Atreides brought from Kalladan to Arrakis belonged to the bull that Paul's grandfather had lost a fight to. His grandfather's blood was preserved on the horns. The head served as a warning to never underestimate your enemy.

Okay I'll add some context: Humanity in the future had a massive problem with AI and computers and lots of people died, so Humanity deciced humans would specialize in paticular skills to fill the void left by machines. The use of advanced mathematics fell onto a small group of humans referred to as "The Guild". They used the spice Melange from the dessert world Arrakis (also called Dune) to further enhance their minds and eventually gained a monopoly on space travel by being the only ones capable of preforming the calculations needed for long distance travel. So every faction of Humanity relies on both the Guild and Spice for interstellar travel. Lastly the reason they don't use guns is because this far into the future they has lasers as weapons, but then energy shields were invented and because of how the they work if you shot one with a laser, the two points of contact (the shield and the laser gun that fired it) would both form a nuclear detonation. So since shooting wasn't an option anymore, time to use some slow moving melee weapons. Long comment sorry 😅

This is a really good short summary of dense material. The Dune universe exists because every single thing formulated in this universe is a direct result of AI overtaking its creators, humanity winning, and the remaining human political structure creating strict religious anti-AI doctrine. The Dune universe gives a possible very long-term outcome of humanity if humans survived the apocalypse of AI.

so the thing with jamis and being paul’s mentor - paul’s visions allow him to see possible futures, including one where him and jamis became great friends. this is why paul cries after killing him in the duel, and it’s the tears (and giving up his water for another person) that make the fremen immediately respect paul. but yeah, the key thing here is that paul’s visions are possibilities, which lets him learn things without needing to directly experience them. so he gained the benefit of jamis’ mentorship without it actually happening, and he gained the experience in fighting him without needing to lose.

@Habibibrothers. The religion practiced by the Fremen is known outside Arrakis as Buddislam - a fusion of the two ancient religions from Terra, 11000 years in the past at this point. Very interesting to get your perspectives on the film, given the obvious inspiration Arabic culture had on the idea of the Fremen. As for Paul's visions and Jamis as enemy/friend, Paul sees possible futures and the paths that lead there. So in one future, Jamis is his friend and teacher, but in the path Paul has to take he was his enemy and first kill. Also, Paul has a vision of Chani killing him with a Crys knife, but by giving him the weapon he uses to kill Jamis she does, in a sense, kill the Paul that existed before he had to take a life.

Great reaction guys. A few things: This book came out in 1963 so it was the inspiration for many books and films, not the other way around. It's been many years since I read it but I believe the shields repel any force with an equal amount of force, that it why bombs and guns are useless and you have to penetrate the shields slowly to get though. And you might have noticed the absence of computers and that is because of a war against machines called The Butlerian Jihad, that happened thousands of years before the time of this story. And yes it was inspired by events in the Middle East which is why it's called a jihad. Spice is a metaphor for oil. And lastly, Jamis said he would show Paul the way of the desert, and he did that by making Paul kill him. The voice said 'when you take a life you take your own'. So Paul had to die for the 'Kwisatz Haderach' to arise So Pauls death was always a symbolic death. Can't wait til you see part 2. Everything will become clear.

Dune takes place thousands of years in the future. Most cultures in it are a mix of Catholicism and Islam (both future versions of Sunni and Shia) as well as other religious beliefs, but the Fremen especially are heavily influenced by (and if i remember correctly, the descendents of) Arabic cultures. They dont use the phrase Jihad in the movies, instead just substituting "Holy War", but in the books its used often for both events from the past (ie. The Butlerian Jihad, which was fought to destroy all "Thinking Machines" including super advanced AI with Godlike power).

The villain in this movie is not the Emperor, it's the Baron Harkonnen, who is a rival noble family to the Atreides. It's like a Game of Thrones situation like Stark vs Lannister. The Emperor is a different guy entirely that you will see in the second movie.

The real villain is the clockwork mouse on rails who chooses the path to his own survival and thereby dooms billions in the future. It's a trolley problem.

The Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. is played by Christopher Walken and only shows up in the second movie. And you gotta react to part 2 & 3, the story makes some realy good turns.

Some interesting background when the movie came out. Dune was written by an old white guy in America in 1965. When the movie came out some accused him of racism \ 'cultural appropriation' of Arabic people \ Islam. But young people today are not smart enough to recognize science fiction for what is it - it's not real. The author used many influences to come up with a fictional story. What these critics don't understand is this is not a 'white savior' story, it's the opposite. Paul Atreides ultimately leads the Fremen people to failure and perversion of their once unique culture. The authors intent was showing the dangers of believing in a single cult figure - regardless of race or religion. He was concerned that people thought Paul was a hero in the first book, so he wrote a sequel, "Dune: Messiah" ( which will be the third, and I think, the final movie). Dune Part 1 and 2 is the first and second half of the first book.

It wasn’t the plot and inclusion of Islam/Arabic culture that people thought was racist/cultural appropriation, it was the fact that no Middle Eastern/Muslim/Arabic actors of note were cast in any of the Fremen roles that people took issue with.

@@icatfishedyourdad2767 Well yeah, that too. But the movie, just like the book: the Fremen are NOT Arabic or Muslim. Just like the Atriedes are not French or German or Christians. It's science fiction. The whole point is to look at larger themes: not conduct a DEI audit of race eligion.

Dune! Finally! I thought you would never watch it. The movies are based on the books by Frank Herbert. He got a lot of inspiration from Islamic Arabic and Berber culture. In the books even more than in the movies. It is one of my favorite book series. I don't know if you like reading but I can definitely recommend these books they are brilliant. But whatever you do watch dune 2 because it is even better than this one

I think it's a very interesting way to write a story. Arab culture is being used to inspire the story, out of respect; but no disrespect to Islam. If we look at humanity, 10,000 years into the future, it will be all mixed up - but a big part of it will be Arab.

Frank Herbert's Dune series of novels, as far as I know, take place farther in the future than any other story published. the year it starts in: 10,181, isn't 10,181 A.D. but A.G. (After Guild) the spacing guild that controls space flight in the empire was formed in the year 10,000 A.D., and this takes place 10,000 after that! so, by our calander it's about 21,000 AD!

The Fremen follow a religion called Zennsunni which is an amalgam of Zenn Buddhism and Zenni Sunni Islam that took place 1000s of years in our future. The ancestors of the Fremen were a persecuted group of people called the Zennsunni Wanderers. They settled on Arrakis many thousands of years before the start of this story. That is why many of the words and concepts appear to be Arab or Islamic in nature.

Fremen came from Earth 20 000 years ago, from middle eastern countries, they have the influence of Islam and Boudhism evolved in the future with other cuktural things they got during their wandering from Earth to Dune ; That's what the author, Herbert Franke, wrote in his books.

YEEEEAAAAAA!!!! I’ve been WAITING for this one! This whole saga is a slow burn but OH MAN is the payoff worth it Edit: Two things. The fat villain is not the Emperor. He is Baron Vladimir Harkonen, head of a major noble house like House Atreides. The emperor worked with him to kill off their mutual rival. Also, Paul’s visions are POSSIBLE futures that he sees
