Both migration and climate change are prominent issues in the run-up to the upcoming European elections from 6 to 9 June and will spark in-depth discussions on the political prospects of addressing human mobility in the context of climate change in the aftermath. This workshop provided an opportunity to discuss EU action on climate-related migration and displacement in light of the key messages emerging from the empirical, policy, and scenarios work from the HABITABLE project, with a view to also informing guidelines and recommendations for EU actors on how to improve the management of such migration and reduce the risk of displacement.
Key preliminary insights:
🌍 Perception drives migration decisions, not objective climate impacts. Migration is highly individual and context-specific.
🌱 Sustainable development policies enhance resilience and make migration an effective adaptation strategy.
🗺️ Policies must address the entire migration pathway, considering origin, transit, and destination areas.
🗣️ Language matters. Clear language is needed to address human mobility and climate change.
The event was facilitated by adelphi research, alongside project partners CARE France, UNESCO, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Sapienza Università di Roma.
