A college professor takes in a dog he finds abandoned, and both find their lives changed forever as they form an unbreakable bond. Based on the true story of Hachiko, an Akita dog in 1920s Japan remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his master.

That scene when you see Hatchi in older years, just walking to the train station all dirty -- omg even watching this video is making me cry like a baby. This poor little animal just cares about one thing - Seeing his owner again - so sad that he has no idea that he is never coming back. :*((

I honestly have to wonder what people in Japan thought of this version of Hachiko since the dog has become one of their cultural icons for the last 100 years.

What a beautiful and touching story. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more emotional. I have never cried so hard during a movie in my life. My 7 year old son just kept looking at me and asking "are you okay Mommy" I was sobbing uncontrollably. I normally stay away from sad movies but this one is worth every tear. The real Hachi will never be forgotten.

How sad he's sitting waiting ten years for a man who will never come because he can't. How tragic. Heart wrenching and heart warming at the same time. Dogs have no concept of death, so he thinks he's just taking a long time, trusting he'll come. He doesn't give up on him, perfect loyalty.

I really hope that Hachi's patience and loyalty was eventually rewarded. I love how both the Japanese and American Hachi movies implied that the professor's spirit returned to retrieve Hachiko and take him to heaven when he finally reached the end of his life.

I just watched a summary of the movie and for some reason I kept replaying it and believe me, my face is wet. I cried. This movie is the saddest movie to be filmed, its sadder than Old Yeller AND 8Below and you know what, they are both also true stories! I decided to write a book about this movie, hopefully someday it will be in stores. :) But still I cant believe this dog waited so long for his owner; he knew he was dead obviously that's why he barked and told him not to go that day, and he had also brought back the ball and played fetch, and he never played fetch with him! The dog just wanted to wait, and that is what makes it truly amazing. 5 stars is deserved... lol got tears on the keyboard while I was typing this.

I had always assumed that they filmed with an older dog at the end. I was quite surprised to learn that the older Akita was a 4-year old dog named Forrest. They did an excellent job aging him and training him to walk slowly.

Considering that most big dog breeds only live 10-12 years or so, 4 is nearing middle age for an Akita.

My sister just sent me "Hachi" in a Breast Cancer care package. Everyone who took part in this movie was so amazing! My fiancée has worked on 100s of commercial sets as a PA & he's told me that the hardest ones to direct are the ones with dogs. It's a film to deeply appreciate in every way. It touches the soul, the very heart of you. The film reminded me so much of our family dog, Luke. I used to come home for Christmas every single year & the one Christmas that I couldn't make it, he died.

@Jamerio3D I choke up once we get close to the part where the professor dies. Because I feel so sorry for Hachi, but he never stops waiting. And then when the professor comes back to get him to bring him up to heaven, sad because Hachi dies, but it's just so happy that they're finally reunited.

it's amazing that sometimes what we expect to other people cannot be seen to them but to these creatures. they could love as unconditional no matter if we shout to them or we neglect them for some reason. no matter how much they hurt, they're still loyal to us.

@terry brown: If you did some research, you will find that the real Hachiko was adopted by his owner's gardener, Mr. Kobayashi, who gave him food and shelter. There was NO need for Hachi to go to the train station for food. The ONLY reason why he went there was to wait for his master. Ref. Akita, Treasure of Japan, pages 5-6 and if you are intent on further research, the 17 pages of Bibliography at the back might be a good place to start!

@@himashisirimanna8178 What I didn't like about the 1987 movie was that it implied that Hachiko was basically kicked to the curb and unwanted after his master died when in reality, he was very much loved and cared for by those who knew him and Professor Ueno. When he became more famous, a few people who worked at the Shibuya train station would actually sit next to him while he waited for his master.

i don't know if this is true but *SPOILER ALERT! DON'T READ FOR YOUR OWN GOOD IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE MOVIE!* at the ending of the movie, when Hachiko is a few seconds away from dying, he saw his master(spirit) to come and pick him up, so i think saying "that man won't come" is a bit wrong cause the man that died, picked up his dog(spirit) and took him home(heaven)

@john84753 your obviously a cat owner.this is the psychology of a cat -not a dog. I own both. however, no comparison in terms of companionship and loyalty, dogs are simply light years ahead and much brighter. in fact, the hachi story although moving is not that unusal. many, many similar stories involving canines only in different contexts have been documented. dogs are second to none in terms of loyalty, love and affection -unfortunately, that prob includes most humans too

There have been cases all over the world of dogs and even cats who remained loyal to their owners even long after their deaths. The oldest account is in Homer's Oddessy where Oddyessus's dog, Argos, waited for his master's return for 20 years.

Well, contrary to what the Hachi movies implied, Professor Ueno actually never married or had children so he doted on Hachiko like his own child. So it shouldn't be a surprise that Hachi loved his owner so much.

@john84753 lol, your like this child who retorts, "no its not true, its not" lol. A simple google search using appropriate key words yields thousands of related (OR SIMILAR) stories concerning canines. Moreover, lots of stories illustrating canine loyalty more strongly than than this one. Even Utube, for instance, is permeated with news accounts of dogs coming close to starvation due ro refusing to leave their master when he/she has, for example, taken ill.
