I would not use just water to test the accuracy of my sprayer. Herbicides and dies change the volume at which the sprayer disperses what is being sprayed through it. Purchase a measuring cup that is specifically used for herbicide mixing and test the sprayer in that using your mixed solution.

which herbicide do you use for this purpose?

There are several. I recommend searching the internet for 'tree herbicide' and see which one should work for you. It may be Roundup, Arsenal, etc.
