In the past decades of continuous development, the world has become significantly more complex presenting itself with large uncertainty. Accordingly, a new way of life has evolved that marked by increased pressure is burdening the overall performance of our brain and body. In spite of the difficulties presented, we evolve to keep on improving in order to overcome challenges for success. Nonetheless, according to Karolien Notebaert, PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, rather the opposite is true as she believes the significant extend of societal pressure is rather limiting our cognitive efficiency. In her talk “Hack your own brain”, she presents mindful self-regulation as a pressure-relieving mechanism. Describing it as the capacity to manage ourselves and the internal blockages that limit our potential, Karolien explains how the latter can reduce stress in specific areas of the brain synergistically improving performances of other areas that excell our mean peak performance both professionally and privately. Her talk aims to create consciousness and openness to embrace the power to unlock our talents, capacity and skills. On the stage of TEDxUHasselt, her main focus will be to guide you on how to unlock your brain’s full potential. This cognitive neuroscientist believes that humans are not taking advantage of their full cognitive potential. Her solution? Mindful self-regulation! As a consultant and author, she tries to make cutting-edge neuroscience applicable to individuals and companies. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Most people need doctors and scientists to explain what ancient relgions and wise men and women tell us for so long. Karolien explains this matter in simple words, yet well thought insights from science and is not afraid to bring in personal experience. This talk is so clear and an eye opener! Thank you for bringing this to the world.

I have a very strong, chatty monkey in my brain and hearing this talk helped me so much to put things in perspective and focus better. This really unlocks HOW you can become the best you can be; something we all ultimately want. Dr Notebaert explains this scientific wonder in a way that we can all completely understand and relate to. It's a very important talk we should all see and strive to live by.

I like the simple formula that Karolien presents at the start of her talk: "Performance = Potential - Interferences". Of course, becoming aware of the interferences and taking action to disarm them is less simple but nonetheless worth working for. Karolien presents an effective way to start disarming your interferences.

Very informative video. Suggestion to relax the mind. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Be careful what you feed your mind. Reduce watching negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15-20 minutes or more. You can sit or lay down on the bed--No deep breathing. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. Keep a reminder to observe your breath sensations throughout the day and night anywhere -anytime-- before sleep, at work, at home, when travelling etc with eyes open or closed. One more tip is to sit on a chair without moving, be still and observe your breath for a few minutes. Stillness reduces thoughts and brings quick relief. Like me make breath observing a lifetime habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.
