TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. You can train your mind to do what you want it to. Collaboration with your mind is crucial, the pictures you make in your head and the words that you say to yourself influence how you feel. So tell yourself better things, stretch your mind - make the unfamiliar, familiar.
Marisa Peer is a world renowned speaker, therapist, and best-selling author with nearly three decades of experience. Named named Best British Therapist by Men's Health magazine and featured in Tatler's Guide to Britain's 250 Best Doctors, she uses her experiences treating patients including rock stars, CEOs, Olympic athletes, and Oscar winning actors to inform her life-changing speeches and lectures. She has been voted best speaker at numerous conferences including The Yes Group London and the Women in Business Superconference.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

To have a fantastic collaboration with yourself: 1. Tell your mind what you want. 2. Link massive pleasure to going there and pain to not going there. 3. Change the pictures and the words. Using very detailed words. 4. Make the familiar unfamiliar and the unfamiliar familiar. 5. Make Self Belief so normal to you that everyone believes in you too. ✨ Your potential expands beyond what you can imagine.

Inside: Teach yourself Spanish, with these free online Spanish resources. This is the list I wish I’d had as a new teacher, or as a Spanish learner myself. Here I’ve collected my favorite online Spanish resources, and all are free (though some may have paid upgrade options). These are great for supplementing in the classroom or practicing at home. If you want to learn Spanish, most people will probably tell you need to practice. That’s actually not true! The main thing you need is lots (and lots and lots) of input. x 0 seconds of 0 seconds The best resources to teach yourself Spanish: Focus on high-frequency verbs and words, over and over. Use language in context. Are comprehensible and interesting. If you are looking for a younger crowd, I’ve got a great list of sites to learn Spanish online with kids. You also might like my post on the best Spanish learning apps. TEACH YOURSELF SPANISH Here’s an outline of the resources included in this post: Spanish Apps Spanish Podcasts Online Interactive Lessons Spanish Videos Spanish Listening Sites Online Reading Practice Optional: Grammar Resources TEACH YOURSELF SPANISH: 5 APPS 1. DuoLingo is decent as far as free apps go. Take a placement test and move through lessons at your own pace. DuoLingo can be a little frustrating because it can be picky about small errors, but it seems to be improving. There is also a new stories feature, that seems to be more in line with comprehensible input! 2. Babbel is for busy learners who want to quickly reach a conversational level of Spanish,. Lessons are mainly presented through audio and images, and then in context of conversation on everyday topics, in 10-15 minutes. The app is easy to use, and there is a lot of interactive translation practice between English and Spanish. 3. Busuu offers lessons up to the intermediate level. Users who complete the entire program receive a certificate through the creator company McGraw-Hill. The app teaches vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing, and speaking skills, though the grammar lessons are exclusive to the paid version. 4. HelloTalk is an exchange language app that puts you in touch with over 1 million native speakers and language learners all over the world. If you are serious about improving your Spanish, this app can help you with actual real-world conversation practice. 5. Qlango is a quiz game that provides you with Spanish audio, and you have to race to click the correct English translation. The interface is basic, but it’s nice to have on hand for quick practice when you have a minute. LEARN SPANISH WITH PODCASTS I LOVE podcasts for busy Spanish learners, and many more are coming out all the time! Here are five free options for leaners: 1. Español con Juan This podcast was created with Spanish learners in mind, who want to learn Spanish naturally through normal conversation and interesting stories. 2. SpanishPodcast.Net Although the site offers “Spanish 101 lessons”, they are really grammar lessons in Spanish and would be very difficult for beginners on their own. There are a ton of videos on KZbin as well. 3. Spanish Obsessed Lisa and Rob co-host this podcast, which has dozens of well-produced episodes. Even the very first levels are conversation-based, and all episodes include transcripts. 4. Discover Spanish is an organized podcast that moves through introductory phrases in well-paced 15-minute chunks. The main structure is a presentation of new phrases with some explanation and then a chance to repeat them several times. 5. The Unlimited Spanish This is an impressive and extensive collection of almost 150 podcasts for improving your listening skills. Most episodes include a transcript and lesson outline on the website. ONLINE INTERACTIVE LESSONS 1. Fluencia Similar to DuoLingo, this site/app takes you through bite-sized lessons that include listening, speaking, and reading. 2. FSI I haven’t personally used this site, but it came strongly recommend here. Put out Foreign Service Institute to train foreign workers and officials, it includes an online textbook and audio lessons. 3. Busuu The free version is a bit limited, but gives self-paced interactive lessons and connects you to native speakers as well. LEARN SPANISH ONLINE WITH VIDEOS 1. Mi Vida Loca This series is one of the best online Spanish resources! Created for absolute beginners, you get an immersive adventure set in Spain, with lessons along the way. There’s a tad more English than I’d like, but it’s still great. I created a series of games and links to accompany each episode, as well as a free packet to accompany the first 5 episodes. 2. Dreaming Spanish 3. Extra Extra en español exposes learners to Spanish, in the context of a sitcom-like setting (similiar to the show Friends), through 13 episodes. The show is really funny, and though most teachers don’t have any problem showing it, the romance scenes are super exaggerated (awkward? weird?) Parents/teachers might want to preview. Here’s the first episode: 4. Destinos So Destinos is a bit dated. If you can get past that, it’s a great resource! 52 episodes follow a lawyer around the world as she tries to solve a mystery. They’re a great way to get immersed in Spanish in the context of a telenova, with culture thrown in too. 5. Video Ele is a series of videos that introduce different themes and strutures, with some culture thrown in. My students find them a teensy boring out of context, but for a motivated learner or to show a specific topic in class, they’re great! Here’s an example: TEACH YOURSELF SPANISH WITH AUTHENTIC LISTENING 1. Spanish Proficiency Exercises All are video recordings of native speakers from different countries, and are organized by proficiency tasks and levels (score!). 2. Spanish Listening This is another gold mine of native speakers, with videos divided by topic and level. There are also activities to go with each recording. 3. Radio Ambulante Produced by NPR, this podcast contains Latin American stories and is best suited for intermediate to advanced learners. 4. Lyrics Training An online fill-in-the-blank activity for listening to music in Spanish. 5. Ver-Taal Authentic commericals, trailers, newscasts, and more in Spanish, with comprehension activities as well. 6. Learn Spanish Podcasts Very cool site for learning Spanish through comprehensible podcasts (not for absolute beginners), with transcripts included. ONLINE SPANISH RESOURCES: READING PRACTICE 1. BBC Mundo World news in Spanish. 2. People en español 3. ESPN in Spanish 4. Newsela This is a great resource for news articles. The best thing is that you can choose grade levels to simplify the reading if desired. 5. Reading is one of the most effective ways of acquiring language. Beelinguapp offers users the chance to read and listen to books and articles in multiple languages. SPANISH GRAMMAR RESOURCES 1. Study Spanish This website has most Spanish grammar topics broken down into lessons. The explanations are clear with examples, and there are a variety of ways to practie. 2. Spanish Language & Culture Lots of grammar activities and in-context practice, with some listening and song activities thrown in. 3. 121 Spanish Is a well-organized site, with video as well as grammar activities. 4. Señor Jordan A Spanish teacher, Señor Jordan has a series of KZbin videos explaining various Spanish structures, with some songs as well. Since I don’t do much grammar in class, this is a great online Spanish resource that my students can do at home. He also now teaches using comprehensible input, and is beginning to create storytelling videos that teach grammar as a pop-up. Here’s an example: What sites did I miss? SUMMARY 1. Your mind does what it thinks are in your best interested. if you are not getting what you want then you are not collaborating with your mind properly. 2. Your mind is hard wired to move towards pleasure and avoid pain. 3. All your feelings are down to two things 1. the pictures you make in your head and 2. the words you say to yourself. 4. Your mind loves the familiar. If you want to succeed you have to make what is familiar unfamiliar and vice versa. Simple but great.

Suraj Jain I'm just curious how you know what or why the person commented by leaving a summary before" listening" to the video? Did I miss something. My comment is not to Tell you but to ask you, I only ask this question to understand how anyone can know 4 bullet points and waste time if there is already a description of this video, per se? Do people actually just search KZbin videos to help assist others by providing the short version? I appreciate the comments of people as a result of watching, listening and visually having access to summary is the best way some retain a lot more information. Just a little thought, I am surprised to read what someone else "should " do as opposed to accepting it's already been done. It is a thought and only my own personal perception .

She's right. That is how I became a writing genuis, with steady writing success. I tell my mind. "I am a writing genius, I was born to do this, I want this book done ASAP, I want these poems mastered, submissions sent out, I feel relieved when I do this, I don't feel like a nobody, I feel that the world can hear me, I am saving my life, I am doing what I have always dreamed of doing." I speak these words, and also say them outloud and write alot of daily. I also visualize myself doing every step of it. My morning schedule is like this: watch my favorite reminders videos for my spiritual growth 2. I go for a walk, meditate and visualize my goal and speak to the universe 3. I write down what I want to achieve for the day 4. I take vitamines, play music for my brain and drink and eat foods for my brain. 5. I read work, edit work, submit work. 6. I read, and study This is my routine, and this how I keep steady writing success. 😊

There’s a great little book on natural healing written by an older man who cured himself of a number of maladies without medical intervention, called My Physician, Myself. I read it a couple of years ago but lost my copy. I’m going to Amazon right now to order one and be more careful with it. It’s more than well worth the read. You light look into the work of Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman who lived to 102.

The is a wonderful presentation bar none. I am a student of metaphysics and what Ms. Peer has presented is a masterful approach to the subconscious mind using imagery, words, and ideas. She knows this one thing: the subconscious mind will do whatever you present to it.......good, bad or indifferent. It knows only one thing......what you present to it is what it presents back to you in the world of matter.

I collaborated with my mind and told my mind that this will not hurt, accept the surgery, accept the new change in my body. I did this for a week before my surgery. I had the sleeve surgery on June 21, 2021 and was back at work on June 23, 2021. In the community with my team. This works !!!

This is so true. Recently, I conditioned my mind to think (believe) that sleep is for rest, not for pleasure. For some time now, I've noticed I wake early (before my alarm 5am). Once my body gets enough rest (I try to go to sleep before 10pm), it wakes itself! Sometimes I find myself awake & alert, I look at the time & it's a few minutes past 3am, that's 2 hours before when I should wake. I use that "extra" time to work on some stuffs. It's be life changing for me! We really can collaborate with our minds for our benefit.

Hi, I been watching a lot of videos about how to achieve your goals. And this video gave me chills. I know that I have to be positive but the way she says it and explains it is different and interesting. I like what she said. Make the unfamiliar, familiar, and the familiar unfamiliar. I love it. I want this. I have chosen this.

I have been watching this video over and over since last night. What a great talk. This is actually my first time to comment on a video on TED talk although I watch them all the time. My motto: "Never a day without watching one TED talk video". Marisa talk has really changed my perception of things. Has helped me to put things into place. Our mind can be used for us as well as against us. It is definitely everyone's choice. Thank you Marisa.

Fascinating! I tried the arm trick with my daughter and husband guess what I found so intriguing... my daughter and I exceeded beyond as expected and my husband said "It won't" as he went to do it the second time and to my amazement it didn't even go back as far as the first time! I'm so inspired and did a really long plank just because apparently I could 😆 thank you God for giving us incredibly awesome brains! So powerful 😍

In my 20's I was into weight training. I would lift between 3 and 6 hours a day on a split routine. I would end the routine with complete exhaustion. The next morning those muscles I worked would be stiff and in pain. I was able to do this for years because I convinced myself that the exhaustion I felt after the workout was what it took to build strength and size. The pain I linked to pleasure, in fact if I didn't feel pain I knew I hadn't worked hard enough and actually felt disappointed. I can't remember where I came up with this crazy ideal, but it's pretty much the same thing she's saying in the video.

I was also into weight lifting and although I used to do for about an hour 5 days a week, I would always be in pain (some muscle would always hurt) + the extreme sleeping (biggest pleasure of all). Then I stopped weight lifting and shifted to yoga...I was so surprised there was no pain anymore...But yes weight lifters don't care about pain, it's just a sign their muscles are expanding, so it's good and a pleasure...

Some people tell that to themselves and it doesn't work for them, though. What really works is the fact that you're consistent about it: your actions speak to your subconscious, and your subconscious says "I am a person who works out and commits."

As you said, "it always does what it thinks is in your very best interest" and I think it's interesting how this relates to fighters that have reputations for a glass chin, or for the ability to take tremendous punishment before their minds decide to shut down in order to protect the body from further harm, assuming that in that situation, one would be safer unconscious than fighting back any longer.
