People who are determined and intelligent enough to figure things out for themselves also tend to be self sufficient, independent and very passionate about their beliefs. This type of citizen or subject tends to challenge the status quo of established doctern. This is why they are labeled as dissenters and criminals rather than embraced for what the offer, basic freedom. Demonization of such persons, for the purpose of controlling the masses, is an affront to all who truely love freedom. The actions of a select few do not a subclass make. If we are not free to think, explore and discover for ourselves then we are not free. Our colective cultures will wither in stagnation if we can not indulge in something as basic as human curiosity.

If we are to fear hacking due to terroristic activities then should we not also ban automobiles, plains and for that matter pedestrian gathering places (ie shopping malls and open markets)? Im sorry but I do not see how agregious testing of syphilis patients holds any bearing on hacking. Curiosity prevades all aspects of life, commerse, religion, science and so forth. It would seem that branding all pursuits driven by curiosity with this horrid act is in itself a very broad generalization. As to your last comment. Please feel free to read my post more thoroughly. You made my point, though less succinctly. "The actions of a select few do not a subclass make." Thanks for your feedback. At no time did I or the speaker ever state that a blind eye should be turned to the bad things that are done with hacking. Not once. Please take the time to actually listen to Keren and reread my comments. The is the best Ted talk I've seen till date... Although I don't know the 'A' of a hacking, but I truly believe that they are like the god to us, after hearing what she said. All MI life I've been known to hackers as the bad people who steals money and this is because of the people that defines them, the government, the films etcetera. Being a loner, socially misunderstood, on your own, in your own world, it is all just code: 001110011 which is machine code like brail. Communicating with something is what you would want to do. Whether you would love to do this is something else. Hacking is about testing. There is no law on the internet because it belongs to the free society. If you connect anything to the World Wide Web you make it free. If you do this you are putting all of your personal network 'on line'. You cannot imprison such people. Hacking Fortran and Cobol code to run smaller, faster, better improved applications. Anonymous was taken down by US CIA from infiltrating it. To take down a network you infiltrate it from within. Locking yourself infront of a machine for 7 days, napping, snacking, thinking constantly to improve and alter your code .... not sure if it is something a normal person would willingly choose to do. America is not a democracy, UK is not. There are no democracy's. There is no free society. Countries laws have blocked numerous sites from being accessed through internet providers i.e EE, Virgin etc. It sucks. We need another WWW and keep it as ours and not 'theirs'. They need their own business, militray webs. Ai

Thank you for your insight into the world of hacking. But let me say that your right, there is no freedom specially democracy. One thing we have to acknowledge is that it took a hand full of companies, universities, and the government (DARPA) to create the internet. So, technically, I might be wrong in saying that it belongs to the government and was never really meant to be embraced by the public. But it was. My interest in hacking isn't for breaking into government facilities or taking down some corporations main frames or to become the next snowden. On the contrary, its to keep them out of my system and try to keep them from violating all of my rights and getting away with it.

Great talk, but I have a nit to pick about her usage of the term "full disclosure". Full disclosure means publishing in some public forum exactly how to exploit some vulerability, so that _anyone_ can use it. What she describes is a massive number of hackers leaving evidence that they had performed the exploit -- not letting it loose for common criminals to use for their own purposes.

You usually distinct between full disclosure and responsible disclosure. In responsible disclosure you contact the vendor first, you talk with them about the conditions of the disclosure, you give them what you have got and some time so they can fix the bugs. In full disclosure you just put anything you've got open in the internet. It necessarily have to be a full working exploit, a description of the vulnerability can still be considered full disclosure.
