Hacks Added Freon Every Year Instead of Leak Search - Client Wanted Bosch - We Repaired Instead

Every year another contractor added refrigerant R410A instead of taking time to perform a leak search. In less than 1 hour we identified a leak on the evaporator coil and confirmed the rest of the system was tight. Less than 4 hours later the new coil is installed and system is up and running.
Full Disclosure - being restricted by the scheader cores - we pulled down to 720 microns and it held - passing a decay test.

Mikey Pipes in the old days before EPA usually if it took a couple of pounds a year; when we did an inspection just added R22. No big deal; now a days you need to isolate sections if system is fairly new. It can be costly as its time-consuming. You do good work. Enjoy your videos!

mikey, that purge function the reclaim is to be used to stop all that refrigerant comeing out of the reclaim unit. run it on purge when the system is empty but before you take off the line to the bottle. pushes all the gas from the relciam out, should only have whats left in the line

Nassau County, lived there many years, that repair was probably around $3500.00. I had an evaporator coil replaced in Texas, it was $1500.00 under warranty, no charge for the coil but had to pay for labor and Freon.

@@PipeDoctor maybe if you put the system into a vacuum then yeah atmosphere would get into it but you don't. . Me personally would rather charge it up then leak search with electronic detector and bubbles.

Curious as to why you wouldn't have taken the diagnosis route of using a leak detector around the inside of the coil itself. You can sometimes find the direct source of the leak, and just braze that pinhole. Sure a new evap is probably more reliable however...

Mine too.. it's cheap! Evap side is low pressure so i figured it's way easier just to juice the charge to factory and look for the leak. Find it, pump down, fill with nitro braze the leak, vac and fill up again. I guess it depends on how bad the coil looks inside too .. didn't see of it so maybe your experience tells you best to change it

U can remove Schrader’s by removing screws that hold service valves. U then can use core tools

ike don't mean to tell you your wrong but. if you read the install manual it will tell you that the 2-3 increaser/reducer shall be install on the vertical not the horizontal of the pipe and it does not say that is ok to install said fitting on the horizontal if its on the intake, So as we say in Canada and as per TSSA code 4.1.3 not as per manufacture.

one thing about the bosch systems, the ductwork needs to be good because they love to run long times, minimize the heat gain/ loss from the ducts especially if they run in the unconditioned space.

I enjoy your videos bro it’s just like today I’m not a hvac tech but I kinda felt is was the issue with a water leaking due to something being wrong with the ac at the restaurant I work at evaporator being in the attic and condensate line coming down to a can wash long story I get my plumber to come out and he figured this out quick my guy what a shame for the ac dude that had no clue.

The pressure will change with the change of temperature from the tank being outside in the truck and now inside in the unit . I can't tell you how many Liquid oxygen and Liquid Nitrogen tanks I get from Mc Kinney that would just blow off in the summer .

I had a guy one time, many years ago, that would not let me look for a leak on his system. He was calling me every week and a half to gas it up. He wouldn't let me go to his Air Handler to check it. He just wanted me to keep coming when he called. He always paid me, but I had to let him go. It was Just nonsense. It was an older man and his mother, they always called late in the day, every week and a half. Gas and go.

I've had this before too. Some folks think you have to "fill" the system like you fill your gas tank. And some don't want to pay for leak searches. They can be time consuming whether you do the isolation test Mikey did here or the visual inspection or electronic method. Like he said most of the leaks are in the evap coil that is typically obstructed.

Don’t forget to foil tape the back of the cabinet if you are removing an old copper coil otherwise you have 2yrs tops before your new coil leaks!

Turn off system. The longer it's off the better. Get your leak detector in the drain like and if it goes off walla! Holy craps the coil is leaking! If it's all aluminum no point in doing anything further tearing apart system wise. 2 choices only we give to such customers... Three actually 1) top off and know sooner or later you'll have to do such again. 2) Replace Evaporator 3) Add a sealant product such AC Easy Seal with UV dye that most likely will fix any small leaks and future small leaks. Which in our years of expierence absolutely does. Guess which option every normal person goes for?
