The Donnie Darko Director's Cut comes to mind. It tries to explain what's going on in the movie but all it really does is muddy everything up and ruins the ambiguity of the theatrical cut. The original dvd release had a commentary track with the director and Kevin Smith and at some point the director tells Smith what's really going on, mentioning a time traveling race that are intervening and whatnot and Smith basically just tells him that he wish he hadn't told him that.

I despise the director's cuts of "Dumb & Dumber", and "Kingpin". Both made the lead characters much more unlikable than they were in the theatrical cuts, destroying any charm or "heart" in them. This problem actually manifested itself in "Dumb And Dumber To", where Harry and Lloyd are unlikable jerks just as they were in the director's cut of the original. Which makes me think the Farrelly Brothers 90's success was perhaps due to executive meddling with their edits, to make their characters more likable.

Dumb & Dumber alternate cut is darker for sure (Jim Carrey's character is scary, a realistic portrayal of a stalker. The full extent of Seabass's intentions during the gas station bathroom scene). I'm gonna have to say Sucker Punch directors cut, nothing added to the story and the ending made me want to jump out a window.

I wanted to love Sucker Punch, but I just can't. Still have the DVD though. Soundtrack is amazeballs. Emily Browning's voice. Asleep is certainly among my favorite cover songs.

The Troy directors cut is annoying because the extra scenes are really good but the music is just weird and makes the scenes less epic

So much was wrong with that brazil section i cant even..... the love conquers all version WAS the theatrical studio edit. the version we have now with the downer ending IS the directors cut. Gilliam famously took a full page spread in a newspaper asking them to release the version he shot. while it was still in theatres

Recently bought the 4k blu ray for ET and it only came with the original puppet version. I think the 20th anniversary one is gone now. Not sure how you can get it.

Payback Straight Up Director’s Cut is the worst DC ever. They cut out half the movie, replace the main bad guy with some random woman’s voice who never appears. And it’s almost 20 minutes shorter.

I consider it a “director’s cut” if it’s the version the MPA turned down for an R rating. Usually a just a few mins longer.

The "Picnic at Hanging Rock" director's cut kind of urks me because unusually its several minutes shorter then the theatrical cut.

I saw the director's cut of E.T. first, so I never had a problem with it. I saw the original version years later and it didn't really impact my viewing experience. The story and characters are what matters. I feel the same way about the director's cuts of Star Wars IV-VI. The changes never really bothered me.

I remember hearing that "Mallrats was bad" even from Kevin Smith, but we loved it. Yeah its not high art, but its the perfect stupid 90s movie that you can just sit down and watch and have a great time. This may be colored by my personal bias as my friends and I watched it right when it came out on video and we were 13. I remember it was one of those movies you had to see - "Clerks" of course is another one, and along with the big one which was "Kids". Thats a movie Id love to see reviewed, I know Tony is a bit younger than me (too bad about "He that shall not be named," cuz hes almost my same age and Id find it hard to believe he wouldnt of seen it) but hes watched stuff thats older, so yeah - review Kids, dammit!!!! The soundtrack is really good, too. "Natural One" by Folk Implosion is an amazing song.

The Troy directors cut has scenes that go on too long that makes the movie drag. Francis Ford Copolla also did a new version of The Outsiders, he added a new scene which was good, but changed all the score to rock music that the characters would have listened to, it takes away from the emotion and makes it play like a Disney movie. The guy on the left is so annoying with his high pitch squeals, I need to keep turning the volume down.

This isn't a popular movie, but Babylon A.D. (2008) had its "Raw and Uncut" version, but they "cut" the positive ending and made it an OMFG unresolved anticlimactic and personally ruined the "Uncut"

the outsiders: complete novel comes to mind for me. i like all the new scenes coppola included but i hate how he replaced the original score with rock and roll music and it’s used at inappropriate times and sometimes the sound mixing is so bad you can’t understand what the characters are saying.
