The Donnie Darko Director's Cut comes to mind. It tries to explain what's going on in the movie but all it really does is muddy everything up and ruins the ambiguity of the theatrical cut. The original dvd release had a commentary track with the director and Kevin Smith and at some point the director tells Smith what's really going on, mentioning a time traveling race that are intervening and whatnot and Smith basically just tells him that he wish he hadn't told him that.

I despise the director's cuts of "Dumb & Dumber", and "Kingpin". Both made the lead characters much more unlikable than they were in the theatrical cuts, destroying any charm or "heart" in them. This problem actually manifested itself in "Dumb And Dumber To", where Harry and Lloyd are unlikable jerks just as they were in the director's cut of the original. Which makes me think the Farrelly Brothers 90's success was perhaps due to executive meddling with their edits, to make their characters more likable.
@brandonginsburg31202 жыл бұрын
Dumb & Dumber alternate cut is darker for sure (Jim Carrey's character is scary, a realistic portrayal of a stalker. The full extent of Seabass's intentions during the gas station bathroom scene).
