I hear similar things said of German, that it’s aggressive and harsh sounding as I do Russian. I don’t think it applies to either one. Some of that perception I think boils down to the way the languages are presented from Hollywood. Let’s face it, both countries have had adversarial relationships with the U.S. over the years, and I think Hollywood has taken liberties at times to make the language sounds even more harsh. Especially anything involving Nazis or Hitler.

I've wanted to learn Russian since I was 15 or 16. I'm 52 now and finally getting around to making a real effort to learn it on my own. I've never thought of it as a aurally aggressive language. Then again, I just really love to listen to it. Just last weekend I went to a local Eastern European market to have a look around. When I went to pay for my items I was behind a woman who spoke with the cashier for about 5 minutes in Russian. They eventually stopped and apologized for taking up so much time. I told them it was ok. I just loved to hear them speak. Lol so they proceeded to go another 5 minutes while I stood there going "Well I know what THAT word was...and THAT one...." but everything else was a mystery. For now, anyway. :)

First of all, you are sweet. About Russian, I have listened to it a lot and read even more in the last couple of years, and I can understand quite a bit now. What helps is my native language, Serbian, which is broadly similar, but words the Russians use are often archaic in my language, or have acquired different meanings, etc. You ceartainly cannot understand much on the first try, you have to think, but more you listen to, easier it is. Bad side of such a passive approach is that you do not practice any speaking. The language is very soft and emotional. I am at loss why some westerners find it rough sounding; I could understand someone saying that for German or English, or my own language even.

This impression could be because of russian speaking people's english pronunciation sounds very rude. it's true. Some young people are more persistent about learning phonetics and their english pronunciation is much better. But mostly russian speking people don't care about this. The same, there're some "hard" and "strange" very specific russian pronunciation for foreigners. It's much easier and better when languages are learned at a young age.

I find this to be an interesting video! Most of these I either hadn't heard of, or have, and didn't know they speak Russian! I _did_ know that Merkel speaks Russian, presumably because she grew up in East Germany when it was still a satellite of the USSR. Also, at 5:40, you asked why so many foreigners think Russian is an "aggressive language". As a non-Russian (I am from the USA), I would guess that this has something to do with Hollywood and how, in many Hollywood movies, most of the Russians are bad guys, whether it be the KGB agents of spy movies, or the boxer of _Rocky_ _IV,_ or even the mind-controller of _Black_ _Widow._ This is the same with Germans and the German language, except with Nazis of World War II movies instead of communists. Lastly, you asked why I am interested in the Russian language. Like some of these celebrities, I also want to know a lot more about the culture of Russia, which is just as well, since, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, Hollywood does not do a good job at teaching Russian culture. You, though, are very informative on both the language and the culture! For more information on the stereotype of the harsh German language (sounds familiar?): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqbbmIB9d96gpdU

Ashton, aggressive? Really? Trevor Noah does a Russian accent in one of his stand up routines where he portrays it as quietly menacing, which is a little bit closer to what we are used to from Hollywood portrayals. I do think Russian is a beautiful language and I find it’s mostly spoken rather softly, although the intonation range can go much higher than American English and there are times when it can sound a little shrill and hysterical to American ears, especially if a woman is speaking and she is arguing passionately about something. Even the question intonation can sound very exaggerated compared to English. But in general, I wouldn’t call it aggressive at all. I think Ashton was trying to be funny and the joke fell a little flat to anyone with any passing familiarity with the language. Also, I imagine there are a vast number of regional accents and differences that I wouldn’t even be able to detect as a nonnative.

I think a lot of America's stigma of Russian being an "aggressive" language, like German, is we spent 50 years in direct confrontation with Russia as our only close rival. I learned Russian from 1983 till 1989 and to be honest I forgot like 99.9% of what I knew
по выпуску книги :P Про обнимашки и Милу - правильно было бы, с учётом русского менталитета: "Can I have a hug from you?" "May I hug you?".. (спрашивают разрешения); носители английского языка говорят "Could You give me a hug?" или просто "Give me a hug", "Would You hug me already?": "Не обнимишь ли ТЫ меня?" - по-английски "LET US HUG!" Самая стрёмная фраза на любом языке: "Would You like to hug me?" :))) Gives me a creep.

During Cold war times Russians where portrayed as cold people, I think this is why Ashton thinks Russian sounds so strong. I don't think this way it's a Slavic language and it sounds like any other Slavic language to an English speaker.
