A detail from the end of the game that I really enjoy is how Zagreus ends up becoming the "Security Inspector" of the Underworld, finally finding a vocation in his father's realm as the one guy who keeps trying to escape and find faults in Hades' defenses. Of course, that also gives the game a justification for the post-ending rogue-like loops, but it really just fits his rebellious character so well.
@Jedda678Ай бұрын
Meg is not a harpy, but a Fury. One of three who punish sinners, criminals, liars, murderers etc. Shes more of a warden and attendent to Hades.

Of note: Part of the reason why Kronos' rule was too much for the Olympians was because HE LITERALLY ATE THEM. The only reason they got out of that is because Zeus got swapped with a rock and then managed to cut the rest out. Some notes on the olympian gods: Poseidon is also the god of horses, and in the mythos is the one causing the problems that aren't caused by Zeus, because of his temper. Probably because earthquakes are assigned to him and Greece is prone to those. Cyclopses are also said to be Poseidon's offspring. Deity of war is split between Athena and Ares, though Ares has less other stuff to define him. Athena is generally one of the more benevolent gods but has an extremely nasty side if you disrespect her. Medusa was made as she was because she did some stuff in a temple dedicated to Athena. Artemis doesn't hate her family, she's just extremely introverted and wishes to be left in peace. A noteworthy absence in the cast of Olympians is Artemis' twin brother, Apollo, the god of Light, Medicine and Foresight. Aphrodite, among other things, basically started the Trojan War by whisking Helen away to Troy as a trade for a golden apple. Another absence of prevalent Olympians is Hephaestos, God of Fire and Smith of Olympus, who is also Aphrodite's husband. It's inaccurate to say that Zagreus "cannot die". He very much dies, repeatedly. It's just that the dead get taken to what is basically his front door, so in effect he just goes home by dying.

A note on medusa: That's as far as I know not part of the greek lore but rather a story written by roman poet Ovid. The original greek medusa and her two sisters were all born as gorgons.

IIRC the reason why Kronos ate his children was because, after he castrated his father Ouranos (the previous sky-god before the reign of the Titans), a prophecy emerged wherein Kronos would some day be overthrown by his children as his father before him had been. Five of the children were swallowed whole, but the sixth, Zeus, was hidden from Kronos, and eventually came to overthrow the king of Titans, freeing his siblings and establishing the dominion of Olympus.

Hades 2 spoilers: .. .. Apollo, Hestia and Hephaestos are all present in 2 as boon providers and they do cover some of those aspects you mentioned, so yes they were missed from the first game but they are present during the coming war

I never managed to beat Hades [The Boss] when I played, as my son was born around that time. I'm glad everything ends so nicely. SuperGiant do such an amazing job with their games and their characters that I can't help but want them to be happy (like with Pyre). I may have to go back and play Hades again now that I have some more time. Thanks for the video Jesse, I love when you go out of your way to edit a lore video, especially historical/mythos stuff. Was so excited to see this! Hades is one of my favorite games ever. I never thought I'd be into it since i hadn't played much roguelites and absolutely hate roguelikes. Can't wait till you do the Hades2 episode. If I may recommend a way to get into greek mythology. Stephen Fry's "Mythos" followed by "Heroes", "Troy", and finally "Odyssey" Mythos is about the gods, the creation of the world, and everything leading up to the age of heroes. Heroes tells of all the heroes from Hercules twelve labors, Bellerophon, Theseus, the Calydonian boar hunt, Jason and the Argonauts, Orpheus journey into the underworld, and such. Troy is a retelling of the Illiad and everything leading up to why it happened (Such as the Judgement of Paris) Odyssey is the telling of the nostos of Odysseus and the events surrounding it. I very warmly recommend it, as Stephen Fry (with a lot of help from many others) has done an excellent job of retelling the stories without so much of the disdainful hatred of Ovid that painted the gods as absolutely evil monsters. They are still assholes, just... Not as awful. Much more human.

2:18 It is actually kind of funny, but in some retelling of the mythology Hades was the oldest and when Zeus got the heavens (because he was the one who saved them, by virtue of being the youngest) Hades basically said "Right, well, I'd rather have fuck-all to do with you assholes." And took the underworld as his domain so he didn't have to deal with his siblings.

For fun i decided to make a list of the biggest differences i noticed between hades and the myths its based on: -Most of the incest seems to be retconned, Persephone is now not the kid of Zeus which makes me feel like most other connections like that have been removed. -zagreus himself is now a true son of hades. Later on in Greko-roman history they did start using this more, but there are many tales of Zeus turning into a snake to get on with his own daughter (because of course he did) to make zagreus. And thats not even mentioning the sh*t with dionysus which the game even has a bit about. -hades can leave whenever the heck he wants, he did so to yoink Persephone from the surface, said abduction also being retconned as being Zeus' doing (Zeus in the myth just gave hades permission to marry her). -this one is a bit minor but Artemis talks a lot about Callisto, a nymph that she says can turn into a bear. There are a lot of versions of this, but generally Callisto is by some means impregnated by Zeus (because of course he did) and was turned into a bear bc victim blaming is your only option when the culprit is f*cking Zeus. If yall got more you can comment them down below.

I think it's wrong to say Persephone is Zagreus' "real" mother. She certainly is a mother to him and did carry and birth him; but Nyx is every bit the mother figure she is. There is no doubt that Nyx truly loves the boy; she treats him as one of her own and supports his escapes and efforts to find his family. I think she's the one who initially contacts Athena to inform her of Zagreus' escapes so that he has their support, and keeps the real plan secret. Our boy has two great moms.
