The Gray Ghost As much as the Death In Chains episode annoyed me somewhat*, I have to agree with you that at least they more or less got Hades right. *Mainly because the original myth of Sisyphus on which the episode was based had either Thanatos or Hades (depending on the version) as the one captured, whereas there was no Celesta in Greek mythology that I can recall (and even if she did exist, she wouldn’t have been Hades’ sister, as Hades’ only sisters were Hestia, Demeter, and Hera) and as far as I can tell she was only added into the episode to make the damsel in distress female. But I digress.

Hades has really been warped in our modern world. The Greeks seemed to look at him as a harsh but fair ruler. They also called him the Hospitable One because he always accepted new souls. Also in all of the stories involving him there is at least a version where he is fair. Like allowing Heracles to borrow Cerberus if he can earn the privilege by subduing him without harming the beast. He allows Orpheus to take his wife so long as he proves his honesty by not looking back. Hades gives you what you deserve in reward and punishment. The harshness being that he punishes without sympathy because you deserve it.

Hades is often demonized and underrated yet is one of the most rational Greek gods of the Parthenon. He was loving, faithful and genuine towards his spouse and never cheated on Persephone. Yet mortals and even his own kin disliked him. All hades wanted to do was to do his job and be left alone.

Macaria was brought up in this video, but it’s worth bringing up Zagreus and Melinoë as well. Both were children of Persephone, although sources disagree on whether Hades or Zeus was their father. In general, later versions (e.g. the Orphic versions of Dionysus-Zagreus) said that Zeus was their father, whereas older versions (mostly from fragmented works) said that Hades was their father. Confusing matters even further is the fact that Hades was sometimes literally called the “Deep/Lower Zeus” or the “Zeus of the Underworld”, so even versions that seemingly named Zeus as the father could’ve actually been referring to Hades.

Petite Petite Ditto. TBH it makes more sense for Hades to be the father, considering that all three kids have very close connections to the underworld: *Macaria* was the goddess of blessed death, *Melinoë* was the goddess of ghosts, in addition to nightmares and insanity, and *Zagreus* was the god of rebirth, and in some versions hunting as well. In fact, Zagreus and Hades are sometimes described as being one and the same.

In the Persephone myth, Zeus actually gave her to Hades as a bride because she was technically the child Zeus had with Demeter. So technically, he didnt kidnap her, but was more an arranged marriage without her mother's knowledge. And unlike the other gods, Hades actually treated his wife as an equal, giving her half of his kingdom. In some myths, she is even referred to as "Dreaded Persephone"
@omniavanitas78933 жыл бұрын
He literally grabbed her as she was picking flowers and dragged her in the underworld crying and screaming for help. In what world is that not considered kidnapping? Even the ancient Greeks, for whom arranged marriages were the norm, considered it kidnapping. As for Persephone being powerful and feared? Well duh, historically speaking she is way older and more important than Hades, and not because he was nice and decided to share power with her.

@bacon88r4 жыл бұрын
there's a good chunk wrong with this, but two things really stick out. First, Hades has a BIDENT, not a fork. Second, Cerberus doesn't really "guard" the underworld, his job is mostly keeping souls IN, and rarely has to worry about keeping people OUT. Charon does a pretty good job of keeping out those who don't belong.

“They call me evil. Villain. The Devil. But the joke is on them. For I don’t care what they call me. I don’t care what they think of me. I have a duty to fulfill, and such petty things can not detract me from responsibilities. All Gods have a duty to the world for we are bound to it and it’s people. But only *I* take it seriously. Only *I* don’t treat the world like my playground and the mortals as my playthings. I am firstborn of Kronos and eldest of the Olympians. Cheated out of my birthright by my own family, my own siblings! Yet I got the most important job of all, dispite no one knowing it. For in the hands of any of the lesser mature Gods I call my family, the dead would flood the world of the living. So let them spew their lies. Let them believe their falsehoods. It makes no difference nor matters not to me. After all…” *sly smirk* “All become my subjects eventually.” -Hades on Pop culture’s view of him.
