Haenel Jaeger 9

A poor man's K95 but still great fun. Mate bought one in 9.3x74R. Too much dry firing and one day the window went ping. The firing pin broke and ejected out the barrel and hit the window. He got it replaced under warranty. For a upper market break action single shot they are hard to beat. Still not a K95 stutzen though :)

They are an interesting rifle that is for sure and I was real tempted to get one but ended up going in a different direction. There was always the thought in the back of my mind that ultimately I would have preferred the Merkel K3 or Blaser K95 (except for the paying for them bit). Love the single shot platforms though and those Haenel's are at a real tempting price point, would make a great stalking rifle.

I've got one with the black synthetic stock in. 308. It's a nice well built lightweight rifle. Shoots sub 2 inch with 180gr federal, which I think are prob a bit too heavy for it. Something like a 160 gr would prob suit better. I have a mod fitted as it's a little snappy but super light and simple. Taken three roe with it already and the single shot I love, I'd just like a little more elegance and accuracy so I'm buying a Merkel K3 and buying the bullet. I'll keep the Begara for the heavy stalks. I'm hoping that a 100 rounds through the barrel and some home loads will bring the accuracy in to under 1 inch. If you are looking for a well build single shot rifle then the Begara ba 13 is awesome.

Thanks for doing the review. A couple of questions spring to mind - the top lever seemed to need pushing to it’s closed position - is that typical of the model or just ‘newness’ (or poor fitting) with this particular rifle? Secondly is the trigger guard plastic or metal?

I'm affraid this gun is no longer made by Haenel. That said, the lever needs to be reset to position manually (which actually is a poor design) and the trigger guard is aluminium.

JB R - thanks for the information. The odd rifle crops up S/H hence my interest. The manual return of the top lever would put me off though. Of course anyone can push the lever back into position but equally Haenel could easily have made it self-acting (like other makers do).

Oui il y a un Stetcher à la française . Il faut pousser la queue de détente vers l’avant . Le coup part sous une pression de 500g environ . C’est très léger l Je possède une des premières Jaeger 9 ( Nr 43 ) . Seule différence avec le modèle présenté : la bascule est grise et pas noire . Très souvent cette arme pèse un peu plus de 2 kg 4 . Hélas cette arme n’est plus fabriquée ! Décision du groupe HK et Merkel ! Dommage .

I live in South Carolina and would like to buy a Jaeger 9 in 270 Winchester. I am having issues finding a gun shop in the USA I can order this gun. If anyone out there has a recommendation on where I order this rifle I would greatly appreciate it.

I do like what Merkel has done to revive the Haenel brand. Nice quality german made products, at a price point that most hunters can afford to pay.

Not the cheapest of guns, but certainly very good quality for the money. Just need a few years to reestablish their name

It does look a bit like a Baikal at first glance .[ not that there is anything wrong with that ]. If I wanted a single shot rifle to last me for all of my lifetime , I would spend more money and get a better finished gun in a more interesting or challenging calibre . After a couple of years , as the pain of the purchase price fades into obscurity , the joy of ownership increases . But what the hell do I know ?

I would agree that buying into the merkel k3/k4 would seem a lot better 5-10 years down the line.

Somehow, all kipplauf rifles seem to have sort of the same lines. But I wonder what Haenel is up to, storming the less-well-to-do part of the European hunting market. I've had their Jaeger 10 in my hands, and I wasn't really enthousiastic (except for the price). I wonder if they're made in Germany, or that most work is done elsewhere (I hope Turkey, but I fear China).

Way over priced, i'd buy the baikal single barrel rifle if i wanted a single shot tip-open centrefire rifle. Or maybe a ruger no.1 falling block.

Very different engineering to the baikal single shot. People wouldn’t bat an eyelid at spending this on a shotgun.

Different but any better ? It has very plain wood, cheap looking matt black action, no engraving. What does it do better than the very similar looking Baikal ? You are paying for a name or "made in Germany" stamped on it.

Nice gun, but any thing other than a single bang cannon nitro or larger than . .338 pointless in price and functionality for 2k

The Gun Shop in looking at it from this point, if these are in nitro and large game rounds this is a decent cheaper option to a H&H nitro gun, for deer and long range target this price opens up some top second hand rifles that would be more accurate modifiable etc, so not what am I shooting but a price and function point, great gun reliable good name etc but to me boring and unless it's in the larger rounds why bother, what's your view on this it's a interesting debate :)
