The 2002 was what first made me dream of an "accessible" European car as a paperboy in the early '70s in very far removed Western NY, where the salted winter roads laid waste to most of the cars of this era. This guy is so casual about his craftwork and how he melded the seemingly unrelated worlds of surfboards and custom car crafting. He's an amazing amalgam of skills and cultures. Such an enjoyable episode. BTW, the Mustang at the end is a '67. Only year with the louvered rear quarter panel. Same as my ex had in Myrtle Beach '79-'81. Thanks again!

This is dream level stuff for me. Surfing and the 2002. Surfed a lot living in Los Angeles. I’m familiar w/ this guy’s surfboard work [Surfcraft I believe]. I would always leave notes under windscreen wipers of any 2002 I saw in LA - asking if it were to ever be available, please contact me. I’m sure I annoyed quite a few people, especially in Los Feliez, Silverlake and the west side up the coast to and past Malibu, mostly. I’m sure some other car people can relate. I’ve been fortunate to own a couple BMWs in my 34 years [e90 / e92 / e30 / e21]. Though mostly perfect, all modified in some way - significant or less so - by predominantly my own hands. Two of which pain me to this day, knowing the life circumstances I had to sell them in - and if only I could have somehow held out for a few months longer, their fate may have been different [a driver-focused e30 and a more fitment-focused e21]. The e21 I had up until I was forced to move back to the east coast - less work [eventually no work] = less money for rent, ya know? Selling both was like letting go of family. No one around me understood why I cared so much about the e21 - the e30 they understood, but the e21 they just couldn’t for whatever reason - it was “just an old car” in the words of my ex girlfriend [NOTICE I SAID EX]. Had to sell them all at different times - When things got rough for myself, my family and most families like mine in 2008, and, more recently during the debacle of 2020 to now. What I would do for one of these cars.
