Skeir is an Icelandic sort of yoghurt... it can also be spelled Skyr (but that's just the Danish way to spell it, I guess) - it tastes like a dessert when you put maple syrup on it /it's not a very Danish thing to eat tho/

it's so cool, we have the same thing (haggis) here on the navajo reservation in the USA, but we call it blood sausage, well some areas i guess are band.. well I'm native American from the navajo tribe, we make ours the same way you explained it.. my tribe is know for sheep farming, best know for our navajo rugs from sheep wool.. So sheep is like the main dish here on the navajo nation.. I want to take a vaca to Scotland with my family and try the haggis there, so maybe one of these days..

I love Haggis. You can get tins of it on the internet or in British shops over here in Germany. I love making chicken stuffed with Haggis, with Whisky sauce, mash and veg. And just for the record I usually don't like intestines.

Seeing this, I just have to share my story. I was traveling the west highland way last year with a couple of friends last year and haggis was found regularly on our plates, morning and evening alike. On our last stop in Fort William we got talking about what it actually is with our last bnb's host. My friends asked her about it and before she could answer I threw in the story I always tell (jokingly), which goes: "Well you take a sheep, you sell all the good meat and what you've got left you stuff in the stomach, cook it and that's how you get your haggis". A short moment of silence later with me deeply worried about the possibility that I had just severly insulted our host who had been the most kind person we had met on our journey so far, she said: "Well, that's actually not that far from it". At which point we all burst into laughter. While on my first trip to beautiful scotland a few years back I tried it only hesitantly, I've grown quite fond of the dish and I've tried to introduce it to as many of my friends as possible. In the future I will pass on the knowledge about the special haggis-animal, now that you've shed light on haggis' true origin xD Loved the video!

LOL Yeah thats actually bang on the money! Back a few centuries they used to stuff it in the stomach to preserve it, it would actually be served in a warm sheeps stomach and you had to cut it open to eat it! Thats why now adays its found in a little bag =D

There are several variants of haggis. You've mentioned one, that is a distant relative to a goat, that has horns. I've done additional research and found two more -- Haggis Scotticus and Haggis Caledonius. Haggis Scotticus roam primarily the east coast of Scotland and Haggis Caledonius roam the western side. You mentioned the variation in the legs. Because of the northward migration, Scotticus have developed shorter left legs than right, which makes it easier to stay on the craggy cliffs. On the other hand, Caledonius have developed shorter right legs to accommodate challenges of climbing. Both of them have eight voices, much like a squirrel, with 6 being aggressive. They both have small eyes and very sharp teeth.. The best way to catch a Wild Haggis, because they are very feisty and aggressive, is to have two people involved -- one to make the haggis turn south, and the other at the bottom of the hill with a burlap sack (because of the sharp teeth). By having the haggis turning south the leg size variation makes it likely to roll down the hill. Your description of the body size is correct -- it's basically looking like a elongated ball. The best way of cooking a haggis is in a pot of boiling water. Side dishes would be neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes). The taste is to be acquired, so would need quite a lot of salt. A side note, is how the Irish integrated the skin of the haggis into their bagpipes. What happened was that Haggis Scotticus roamed too far, and ended up by John O'Groats. Because they ended up in the sea, the two right legs being longer created more of a leftward direction, and they ended up on the shores of Ireland. The best beverage, especially if you're underage, for going with haggis is Irn Bru -- it's made from girders, which is part of another story. I have no clue what WeeScottishLass is talking about regarding intestines and stuff.

I do have Scottish ancestry and I've always been curious to learn more about those kinds of things. I do have a culinary degree as well and enjoy cooking different ethnic foods for people to help them try new things because I live in a fairly unsophisticated town and it helps open their minds to other cultures. I've done Indian, Spanish, Soul, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Haitian, Polish, Italian, Mexican, and Russian. I was rather curious about Scottish though and was wondering if you could give me some recommendations, your favorites maybe? Also kind of unrelated, but I do find your accent rather pleasant, definitely better than the faux southern drawl everyone seems to have here because everyone except me seems to be the biggest Country music fan ever.

Hmm. When I was over there, the Haggis' legs were shorter on one side than the other therefore could only run one direction around the mountain. Must've been a peculiar trait of Aberdeenshire haggis. Now when you come over here to the States, you can see stuffed evidence of a peculiar critter called a jackalope...

I like it and had at a Highland game in Scotland County, NC USA

Awww don't be scared! All lungs do is breath fresh air.

I watched a few of the bids you posted and yes "Hog Maw" is close and of course the scrapple aka pannhaas or ponhaus, puddin aka livermush are slightly similar. Depending where your from is what you call them. I'm very interested on trying REAL haggis. Any possible way you could post a family recipe from around you to make it? As far as legality of haggis I believe it can't be imported but if you have a local farmer that butchers the livestock themselves you can acquire the desired results. Or find an Amish butcher. Oh, as far as the beast called "Haggis" it would make a great movie as long as it didn't eat a leprechaun, but was more of a mythical creature much like a minotaur protecting a highland heard. And you could even say the "green" coat it wears is more of a moss like coating on the fur as the seasons there is rain, rain, rain, and rain. Please get back to us with a recipe for a true haggis when you can, lass.

I was wondering what you were going on about in the first half. I was thinking "What? No. None of this is right." :P One of my previous roommates watched an awful lot of TV, so I would sometimes see a show called Bizarre Foods. This guy goes around the world eating and talking about local and cultural foods that are bizarre by American standards. Watching the show nearly always made me really hungry. It was also the first place I had seen it and heard it described. I have a confession: It might be because we don't eat offal over here, but haggis was one of only two things on the show that I didn't find appealing at all. I dunno. I might try some if I ever visit Scotland just because I'm kind of an adventurous eater and I can say I've tried it. The oat version didn't sound bad though and I didn't even know that kind existed.
@WeeScottishLass
@WeeScottishLass 9 жыл бұрын
Oats are a major ingredient in both Haggis' and how on earth can you call yourself an adventurous eater if you've never eaten Offal? xD If you're going to proudly say 'I tried Haggis...' try the real stuff it's so filled with herbs and spices that it's actually incredibly tasty, just try not to think what it's made from, I usually have mind on a roll with brown sauce. (Brown sauce is a UK thing and will be covered in a future video). It's perhaps my favourite thing to eat just now

Offal may be normal food everywhere else in the world, but we don't really eat it over here. It's not served anywhere and there's little that you can find in our grocery stores. Typically all you can find here is a little liver and gizzards in the grocery store.

As you gave a joke about haggis, I'll share one with you. A Portuguese and C. S. Lewis were served haggis. The Portuguese said he felt like a "gastronomic Columbus". C. S. Lewis answered, "in your case, wouldn't Vascular da Gama be more to the point?" Apart from probably eating haggis when I was ten, after reading this, I did check up on what haggis is, so, had no reason to fall for your joke.

I miss haggis. . . Too bad the only haggis we can get here in the US is in a can and it is usually made of beef.

IS IT??? O.o Why??
@IvoryMelodies86
@IvoryMelodies86 9 жыл бұрын
I don't remember the exact reason, so I cited this from an article on BBCAmerica's website for you. "It seems the problem is proper haggis is made using offal, and one of the offal bits that gets minced up and thrown in is sheep’s lung. This contravenes US Department of Agriculture rules about the sort of thing you can expect humans to eat, and they put a ban in force that exists to this day. Any American-made version of haggis omits the sheep-lung completely, and has to make do with… other stuff… instead."

So... according to this you guys are not allowed any Offal at all in America? No Lungs, no Heart no Liver, no Kidneys, no Stomach... no Brains? Really? Seriously? What a waste of the animal, I wonder what you do with all those parts ;.; could feed soo many people ;.;
@IvoryMelodies86
@IvoryMelodies86 9 жыл бұрын
WeeScottishLass well not from this animal, apparently. We DO have liver, but it's usually cow and chicken. As for the lung of other animals, I don't really know. I think you can buy cow heart in some states.

Haggis can't be imported into the U.S. because Americans are not permitted to eat lungs...kidneys, livers, hearts, intestines, brains, feet, and testicles - yes! but not lungs. If it weren't for baseball, I'd move to Scotland! 😜

People have short attention spans ;.; I used to do 10+ minute videos but checking my matrices and analytics on my creator studio showed me people rarely sit through the whole video. It's better for people now adays to have quick short videos they're more likely to watch all the way to the end of :) also it's less editing for me, means these vlogs only take me 4 - 5 hours of one of my precious two days off instead of 10 - 12
