I missed the unique combination of volleyball&animation expertise and appreciation in your reactions! One of the best things that happened to the Haikyuu movie imo is the return of S1-3 director, Susumu Mitsunaka. After S3 with its insane production quality, Mitsunaka felt like he did all he could and it was time for a change in the team, but he did let the studio know that he'd come back if there was a movie, because that means more budget and opportunities to try new things - as he said, it was a rather bold "condition" to have, and he was very surprised when that's exactly what happened and he got invited back xD But Mitsunaka really just /gets/ it when it comes to Haikyuu, and it's so great to have him back. Chief animation director Takahiro Chiba also blessed us with so many amazing visuals.

​@@ElevateYourselfOfficial going to preface this reply saying a) I'm no expert when it comes to the animation industry, and b) we can't really know for sure anyway because the thought process behind these decisions is rarely made public, but for a couple possible factors I saw thrown around: 1) Anime movies are really making bank these days (a trend somewhat set up by the insane success of the Demon Slayer movie), and Haikyuu has an established and dedicated fanbase, so a lot of potential $$$ right there, and 2) S5 could actually look worse than S4, because Mitsunaka/Chiba likely wouldn't have come back for a normal anime season, and because story-wise there's not a whole lot of downtime ahead = higher density of challenging animation. 30 minutes of an average anime episode have about 3-5k frames and take about 1-3 months to make; the same parameters for Haikyuu sit at about 5-6.5k frames and between 3-5 months. Even S1 back in 2014 had a very solid production that took a lot out of the team, and they kept raising the bar to the point where, perhaps, under normal circumstances and with the way the industry works now, it became nearly unsustainable. Sports anime really is just difficult to animate.

​@@ElevateYourselfOfficialyeah, basically: Movies = way easier to get good animation + cheaper + more profitable. Full anime seasons = more expensive and harder to do specially if you want good animation. It's just the sad reality of creative projects, money is going to get in the way.

​@@LixienXIII As an animator (not in Japan) I'll say that an anime series is more stressful and hard on the body. Your budget is low, your deadlines are tight (so tight that you end up doing alot of overtime) and the schedule range from difficult to full on shit show. Some deadlines are literally impossible and you just know they have to extend production if they don't want garbage. As amazing Haikyuu was, it was probably was very hard on the health of the series director, he redrew alot of work. In addition as a creative person it's rare to get the budget to just brainstorm creative ways of telling the story in a TV series. I'm glad the director got the budget to do the POV shot and sound direction he always wanted to do. But still! I still hope for a series close to the manga even if it's not as good looking!

35:04 I love this thought that Kuroo kind of gravitated towards Tsukishima because he saw the same apathy for volleyball in Tsukishima that Kenma had. So because Kuroo has a passion for volleyball, he wants everyone else to have that passion too! It just shows how amazing Kuroo is! Also yeah, Tsukishima also had a similar personality to Kenma so that’s why he could get along with Tsukishima so well. But I also saw a post on Pinterest saying that the reason Kenma became friends with Hinata so quick (despite being so antisocial) is because Hinata’s personality reminded him of young kid Kuroo, while Kenma was growing up. Just the passion they have for volleyball (and wanting to teach others it or make them passionate for it) and kind flattery-like personality drew Kenma towards both Hinata and Kuroo! So Kuroo and Hinata had some similarities in their personalities as well. It blows my mind when I think about it that way and it’s really sweet when you think about it like that! 🥹 Also you’re spoiling us Coach! 4 PARTS?!?! Thank you so much for taking the time to break down all the scenes!

Fukunaga's pun at 19:45 is related to the win Nekoma had over Nohebi in the Spring tournament qualifier for Nationals. "A cat (Neko) that's eaten a snake (Hebi), so it's a common cat snake (a mildly venomous snake found on every continent except Antartica)." It's his comment that just as Karasuno isn't the same team they played in October, that their experiences since then have also transformed them into a new team. It also foreshadows the almost sneaky way Kenma will later try to use to deal with Hinata, a tactic similar to the ones Nohebi tried to use in the "Land vs. Air" and "Path of the Ball" OVAs.

They really focused so much on Hinata vs Kenma, Kenma's backstory, and the rivalry of some of the characters in this movie, they cut a lot of cool moments from the manga. The three things I would've love to see in the movie that didn't make it is: 1. Nekoma realizing that the difference between their team and Karasuno is that they have Kageyama, their genius. The monster that will definitely give them a hard time. 2. Kageyama's hot streak in serves. He's just too hot that Nekoma had to put 4 receivers to dig that ball. lol 3. Nishinoya's miracle save yet again with his heel this time. Regardless, we still got a great adaptation of this match with great animation and still sticking to the story. Many say this could've been a 10 episode match, but I think as a movie it worked out really well.

​@@ElevateYourselfOfficial We can only speculate really but it's most likely because they think they can make the most profit by inputting less time. Anime is usually made as an advertisement to sell an ongoing manga. Basically they want to capture new fans within the first couple of seasons so that they start buying the volumes as they get released. With the manga being over, the majority of fans who are still watching the anime are most likely not going to go back and buy every volume of the manga. So, in a way they don't gain much from making the later parts of a series that doesn't have any new manga volumes to sell. To counteract that they can instead choose to make these movies where they can spend less time on making a shorter runtime in comparison to a full season but still make money by selling tickets.

In case you forgot, that guy who wants to watch Nekoma lose is Suguru Daishō from Nohebi Academy(mascot is a snake) whom competed against Nekoma in their Tokyo prefecture prelims to enter the Nationals but lost to Nekoma. It's one of the OVAs that you've watched but might have forgotten since it was a long time ago for you.

So glad I saw this in the theatre, the animation and atmosphere is fantastic. One thing I felt was strange is how different Suga behaves in the movie, much more excitable and outwardly expressive than in the previous series. I also noticed that when Kenma is reading Hinata's text message and then looks up to Kuroo, it's a point of view animation, kind of mirroring the last play of the game.

As an animator I know I have to get things right because even though the audience can't see it they'll FEEL it when something is unrealistic. Still, it's really nice when someone actually takes the time to see all the hardwork and attention to detail that an animation crew put in. The Haikyuu team did amazing 🤩 . Even though it won´t effect the next videos, I still wanna mention a few things: a)Taiko club is led by Tanakas sister who he begged to help Hinata and Kageyama come to the training camp. Ever since, she´s been a fan and they decided to involve her as a motivator for the team b1) Nr. 6 is Fukunaga Shohei. He is the goofball of the team and he is infamous for his cheeky remarks and weird wordplays. His career afterwards is very fitting to everything we know from his time as a second-year student. b2) The cat snake is a reference to their qualifying game against Nohebi, stylized by a snake. Since the cats beat them, they have developed into cat snakes by Fukunagas logic. b3) The guy wishing for Nekoma to lose is Suguru, Daisho, the team captain of Nohebi and he doesn´t like Nekoma...He is relatively knowledable, but a sore loser. As per usual: Glad to watch the videos, always a joy

I discussed w/ my friend about this how much the story in manga is not covered. But i think the director really did a great job execute this movie. Haikyu is big. And vs nekoma battle is very much to cover. My expectation was low due to dumpster battle going on movie, not a series. But the director, instead of following manga, they choose to use this way (nostalgia-like). Fan feels connected again with their favorites character. Every player has their own changes. Main point of the match is not missed. Personally I like this balance. And I miss your reaction to Haikyu coach. Hope we can do Haikyu party again ❤

A subtle detail: Kenma’s using smartphone while Hinata’s using flip dumb phone. It’s 2013 and smartphone just started rising. If you keep attention to this in the whole series, you might notice that characters from better backgrounds use smartphones (such as Kenma, Oikawa, Goshiki) Btw, after noticing that, it kind of gives me complex feelings when I found Kuroo using flip phone at the end of the movie while knowing the fact that he was raised by a single dad 😯

Tsuki Bokuto and Kuro bonded during the camp Bokuto and Kuro basically uses Tsuki to shut each other off when their team arent playing against each other Kuro teached Tsuki to block to shut Bokuto and bokuto cheering tsuki just if tsuki beat Kuro and Bokuto beating Tsuki just shows how bokuto superiority 😅
