no but there is seriously something so special and real about the eating scene. diachi looking for approval from suga before eating, bc although he’s captain, suga is older. same with kageyama waiting for hinata to start eating before he did too, since he’s the youngest out of everyone. and although the fact that the coach was the one with the most dialogue, we STILL see a great representation of the other characters. for example, noya devouring an entire plate and tsukki not crying while everyone else is... even though he would normally tease or be sarcastic, he’s quiet. this is such a bonding experience for them. they eat together, they cry together, and they will soon grow together. sometimes you lose, sometimes you learn. and i think that’s a beautiful lesson to learn from this show.
@joann96573 жыл бұрын

I’m Japanese Haikyuu fan, and I really enjoyed your reactions! In my opinion, the translation of Yamaguchi’s line ‘’I can’t do what they do” is completely wrong. It’s more like “I want to be like them” or “I want to be able to do what they do”, so I think it’s not fixed mind set. Yamaguchi is the one of the characters who grow up mentally the most through this show, and this scene is meant to represent that his mind has changed because he experienced how it feels when his lack of ability makes him defeated. Sorry for my bad English. I hope you guys can get what I’m trying to say...

I really liked the touch of Oikawa's fangirls clapping to show their respect towards Karasuno after the match. Like, it's something little and commonplace but those girls slowly evolved over the course of the match to rooting for Oikawa to just embracing the game itself, and them acknowledging how hard those crows fought added yet another layer of depth to an already great scene.

Hey Victoria! The reason why oikawa was able to read kageyama's attack at the end was because when in last episode kageyama stopped tsukishima for the reason that he thought oikawa would toss to iwa. He read oikawa's this attack because kageyama actually started to trust his teammates, and in that moment he realized his old self would toss to the best option, which there he says 'thats what i would do' and he realizes oikawa was going to toss not to the best option, but the option he trusts the most, his childhood friend iwa. So he stops tsukishima who also thought oikawa would set the best option, to wait for his toss to iwa. This shows kageyama now stopped thinking rationally like a robot and started to understand how trust works. When oikawa realized this, he also realized that kageyama stopped becoming the dictator king, and started to read trust based attacks, and at the end oikawa knew that now reformed kageyama wouldnt toss to the best option, but his most trusted option, hinata. Because kageyama changed, and oikawa realized that. edit: iwa is not the onion head, onion head is kindaichi a first year, iwa is oikawa's childhood headbumper friend who is a senior like oikawa. note: you will be seeing lots of kenma and kuroo and bokuto in season two! prepare for that practice experience you wanted to see!

The reason they're making such a big deal about the third years staying in the club is because in Japan they have to take entrance exams in order to get into University and most students even go to after school study sessions called juku that can last till 8 or 10 pm everyday in order to prepare for those exams. Obviously if they're doing club sports it makes it impossible to do the prep work that's needed.
@ellatraynor2523 жыл бұрын
Are those like the SAT or ACT in the US?
@ly44223 жыл бұрын
@@ellatraynor252 No, they are much more difficult. And you have to take one for each school you apply to, at the school you are applying to. It's not one test for all universities. Obviously the level of difficulty for these tests is different depending on the school you are applying to, and which program within the school you are applying for. (Tests for business will be different than tests for med, different from engineering etc) In the US although we have options to take different SAT subjects, generally the SAT is the same no matter where you plan to apply. In Japan the entrance exams are different for each uni. That means the entrance exams for top schools are waaaay harder than for lower level schools. Some students spend years taking the entrance exams trying to get into school. Students are accepted by their rank on the test. Also this system is in use in all higher levels of schooling, students must test into middle school, high school, and uni.
@momzwrite3 жыл бұрын
This is a cultural difference that's very interesting to me. I'm not a fan of USA standardized testing, so another culture that leans very hard into subject testing probably has a lot to offer in the education community. Of course I know it's not all good (japan youth anxiety levels being among the highest in the globe), but I'd like to get some perspective on that
@0t4ku4263 жыл бұрын
@@momzwrite It's a huge problem in terms of placing a lot of pressure on students to perform really well on one particular day at one particular exam. The most common argument in favor of these exams that is touted is that this is the best way to get only the top of the top students, but it's actually just the "easiest" way because it sorts students in a very black and white manner. There are problems with the US system too though, like having to have a resume filled with all sorts of varied activities to appear well-rounded. Growing up in the US, I remember being stressed out because I had to take so many AP classes, as well as work part-time for college money and try to volunteer in my free time. Imo the main problem is mainly the whole idea of "top universities" because you can really get excellent educations at many "mid to even low-tier" universities, though even those are getting hard to get into. The other problem I've heard lobbied about the US system is that it creates a loop-hole for people to create fluffed up resumes. In general, both systems favor the more well-resourced because they can afford to dedicate all their time towards academic endeavors that appear favorable to universities, but I don't think that's a problem that the system wants to solve ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OK a few remarks Victoria: -In JP their highschool is 3 years long (10th, 11th and 12th grade), and their college entrance depends exclusively on the entrance exams, which take place at the end of the 3rd year. So usually seniors retire from sports to take the last half of the 3rd year to study for their entrance exams. Its not like in the US where your grades influence your destination. -Haikyuu has 4 seasons. But I believe only 3 of them are on Neflix rn. Maybe when you get there Netflix will release the 4th season. If they don't, there are many other ways to watch anime. -Iwa is Oikawa's 3rd year bff. But he is not "onion-head", that is kindaichi, one of the two players that played with kageyama during middle school. Thanks for everything!! Looking forward to future seasons. Actually there are 5 OVA's (Original Video Animation, episodes that are included on the DVD/Blu-Ray that didn't air on TV). After season 1 "The Arrival of Lev!", after season 2 "Vs. "Failing Grades"", after season 3 "Special Feature! Betting on the Spring High Volleyball", before season 4 after season 3 "Land vs. Sky" and "The "Path" of the Ball". I would love if you could watch the ovas after each season :)

Quick Context: they were playing in a tournament which chooses the qualifiers for the Inter-High tournament. So for their prefecture, which is Miyagi, only one qualifier gets to go to Nationals. They lost to Aoba Johsai and then they lost to Shiratorizawa in the State Finals basically. So Shiratorizawa gets to go to Nationals representing Miyagi. Now, Karasunos goal is the Spring National Tournament which usually consists of more teams and more media attention. It is the biggest Volleyball event in Japanese high school. Probably the biggest Volleyball event in Japan excluding FIVB world cups. Same rules apply, only one team will be allowed to go to the Spring National Tournament. Which means Karasuno will have to beat Oikawa leading Aoba Johsai and Ushijima leading Shiratorizawa. Shiratorizawa is probably one of the best teams in the Nation and are common contenders at the National level. Roughly 60+ teams will make it to Nationals so it's a pretty big deal.

"High School" in Japan is a 3 year school, with students in their third year focusing heavily on their studies so they can get into a good school that can help prepare them for their adult lives. They can tend to take education extremely seriously there and typically, unless the students are planning on aiming for a sports scholarship or they have a good shot at something like getting to national level competition.. they tend to just stop club activities to focus on their studies. Entrance exams there can be brutal from what I've heard and it's highly competitive. You're not just trying to get a passing grade at a lot of schools, you're trying to beat out competition as well. Teachers are seriously concerned about the choices that their students make to make sure that neither they nor their parents regret those decisions. At least, that's how it's been described to me from a few friends I have over there.

Okay so I think we all knew this would cause confusion because I don't think many of us knew about this at first, but the college acceptance process is rather different in Japan and much more grade based. Here in the US you can totally get by with just okay grades when you also do sports and extracurricular activities because your acceptance is based on how you are when you apply. In Japan however high grades are essential to get into a good college, and it's best to go to college right after high school. And instead of just submitting a portfolio like we do here college applicants also have to take and pass an entry exam for the university, which can only be taken ONCE per year. It is not easy and there actually classes many students take outside of school to prepare for it. Generally, if you fail the entrance exams you're screwed, so third years (seniors- high school in Japan is only 3 years) are encouraged to drop things like sports after the first semester so that they can focus solely on studying . While it is a harsh approach when you take everything into account it's an understandable stance.
@ttscream3 жыл бұрын
On the same note, high school sports is often a highlight their sports career, since not many end up doing competitive college sports. So you’ll see many of these major National high school sports tournament be as big as March Madness (Koushien for Baseball). Most of the time, the seniors “retire” before the spring tournament, in preparation for entrance exams. So many high school sports teams are primarily 1st and 2nd years high schoolers (10th and 11th grade) in that spring tournament. (Based on the various sports and side of life anime/manga I’ve read/watched).

Hey, one thing that u should know is that animes usually have some episodes called "OVAS", that either they are canon and have sorta fanservice to entertain, or they are from the real storyline. Haikyuu has a few of those. There's also a Haikyuu movie, which is basically a compilation of episodes, with some really short extra scenes (around 1 min). Here are some of those that you should definitely check: 1) Dateko's Loss kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKfKiHl_rNiZbNk 2) Asahi and Nishinoya kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXyTdYGPg8-cqJY 3) Young Kuroo and Kenma (You said that u miss kenma soo) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZWQiXd7eap_hbM 4) Kageyama and Oikawa kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWbLnKd7areDa7c

for third years, their last year is basically just them preparing for the ONE college exam that basically decides your academic future (unlike the U.S. where college admissions is holistic) so studying is really important, which is why third years in animes always have this super hard decision. AND it's their last year playing so the stakes are high.

I know it seems a bit overwhelming with all of these huge and dedicated fans watching your content, but I assure you, no one’s gonna get upset over trivial things like that. But you shouldn’t be afraid that you’re gonna offend anyone! I understand the worry since it’s an entirely new culture, but you’ve been nothing but respectful.
