A *lot* of Shonen anime have this trope. The main duo is rivals but best friends at the same time. They’re very protective of each other even if they deny it to others but they also wanna compete against the other and succeed, and if the one gives up or doesn’t put in effort, the other usually snaps them out of it because their passion for whatever it is they’re working to succeed at is part of why their bond is so strong. Some fun symbolism with Daichi, Suga, and Asahi. Their numbers are 1, 2, and 3 which not only reflects their seniority as the oldest members, but also the order they usually touched the ball when they all were starters. Daichi, 1, would dig, Suga, 2, sets, and Asahi, 3, spikes.

Yeah I was gonna say this! It's an anime trope. Also, it was a way to motivate Kageyama like "you can't lose to them, so stay on your game!" which is why Suga was thinking he wasn't worried about Hinata since he was still able to be fired up and encourage Kageyama
@pedrogarcia26193 жыл бұрын
That conversation was groundbreaking for kageyama because when the point gap began to widen in the first set he shouldered all the pressure of closing it on himself instead of believing that his teammates could help. If you go back and watch you’ll notice he started to say “I need to” instead of “we” a lot which was a big part of the reason he was subbed out for suga.
@eloisecarcini12803 жыл бұрын
Right?! That gets my heart accelerating and thinking "Kageyama nooo" I can see why he'd feel that desperation to close the gap that he can't think clearly and starts acting on emotions, but still Kageyama c'mon calm down, don't let your middle school self resurface, and work with the team!

also kageyama was often forcing his spiker to spike a certain way, instead of given them a slower, and easy to hit toss to give them option. But that's because he never ajusted his tosses to his hitter before that, and just set the way he though was the best to get around the ennemy block

In terms of getting his hitters hitting at 100%. Kageyama doesn't gauge his hitters as he tends to sets where he thinks the ball should be instead of where his hitters like to hit or where their most optimal at hitting the ball. Suga, adjusts his sets to put his hitters in their best positions for hitting while Kageyama makes his hitters adjust to his sets hence why they aren't hitting at 100% majority of the time.

The conversation between Kageyama and Ennoshita on the bench was groundbreaking for Kageyama because it was the tipping point in his shift of perspective as a setter. From back in middle school to this game, whenever Kageyama was pressured during a game all he could think of was what HE could do individually as a setter to turn the flow of the match around - and his main solution was to go for speedy, hard to hit sets that most of the Karasuno hitters aren't able to hit very well (other than Hinata). Ennoshita pointed out to Kageyama that if Kageyama instead fully trusted his hitters and just focused on giving them the sets that complemented their skillset the best - they'd be able to get past the blocks because all the hitters on Karasuno are talented in their own way (Asahi's power, Tanaka's tooling, Tsukishima's height). This is something that Oikawa also pointed out last episode or the one before that - just to further highlight how good of a setter he is to be able to notice what was going on despite not even really knowing the Karasuno hitters very well.

My interpretation of the 100% comment from Ennoshita is that Kageyama is recognizing that Sugawara is bringing out that 100% from the other players through means of communication and overall positive energy. I think that line will be much clearer in the next episode (which btw i’m so excited for that reaction bc episode 22 is my favorite of season 1) but basically Kageyama is realizing that Sugawara is pulling out potential from the other players in ways that Kageyama had never thought about doing before. Like you said it’s the IQ vs EQ thing and this is what Kageyamas realizing in that scene. It also goes back to the whole “king” mentality thing with Kageyama, he’s realizing that he needs to give his hitters the tosses they want rather than doing what he thinks is best for them. (also this is just my interpretation based off of what i know so i could be completely wrong here)
@daruga1013 жыл бұрын
At this point in Kageyama's game, he likes to put the tosses in the place he believes is optimal with the least blocks, or highest chances of hitting towards an area that is open on the other side. The conversation is groundbreaking for because Ennoshita is driving Kageyama to the conclusion of taking the hitter more into account, accommodating them so that they could "fight in mid-air" with sets they're more comfortable with. When they are talking to Kageyama about Suga helping everyone hit at 100%. I think he’s referring to the fact that Suga isn’t just worrying about passing to the attackers for the best outcome, but he’s considering everyone on his team and their position and how to help them. This is a big thing for Kageyama because before joining the team his world was very small, he only ever really worried about himself. After joining the team his world got a little bigger, with him taking into consideration for Hinata and all of the attackers on his team. Now, after watching Suga interact with the team he’s starting to understand the benefits of communicating and considering everyone on his team. This shows great personal growth for him and it always made me so happy to see that he’s understanding the value of having a team. Ok, long paragraph later, I just wanted to say Congratulations on the new channel! I subscribed as soon as you said too 😁 I love your reaction videos! Watching them every Tuesday puts a smile on my face. Also it’s my birthday and getting to watch a new reaction video made today a great birthday!

During the last substitution when Suga is talking to Kageyama, Suga was about to say "Go win this", but he catches himself and instead says "Lets win this". Basically, it's almost like Suga mentally is about to give up on the setter position, or knowing that he's being replaced/outshined, so he passes that role to Kageyama entirely: "Go win this instead of me" or "Go win this with Karasuno, I'm not the main setter anymore". However, as I said, he doesn't say "Go win this" out loud. Instead he says "Lets win this", [we] [together], which is a more inclusive statement. They as a team should win this. Suga says it in a way that shows that he's still part of the team, and he's not giving up on his position.

At 23:00, what Ennoshita is trying to say to Kageyama is that he's not setting the balls the spikers feel most confortable hitting, instead he is setting the balls he thinks are best for the play. He's trying to say Kageyama doesn't communicate enough to ask instructions on how he can improve his sets in order to make the spikers more comfortable when they are attacking. In other words, he's not USING the spikers at 100% of their capabilities because Kageyama's sets, despite being very precise, are not in the comfort zone for each spiker. They have been just hitting whichever ball they are set.
@2nawbert3 жыл бұрын
The idea behind the conversation Kageyama had with Ennoshita is that Kags is the kind of setter who sets the ball the way HE thinks it should be set and that the spikers are capable enough to adapt to his sets. But Ennoshita is positing that maybe if Kageyama took into consideration *how* certain spikers like Tanaka and Asahi like their sets (a little higher/lower, a little closer/further from the net, etc.) then he would be able to bring out the best in their spikes. Kind of like how Oikawa isn't as "skilled" as Kageyama, but Oikawa is "better" because he is capable of bringing out the best in his teammates. Edit: Also...Victoria. Girl. KZbin literally has a streaming feature. Yes we can watch live with you lmao and I'm sure a lot of us would like to watch your *live* reactions :)
@stevenpibbs28533 жыл бұрын
At 22:10, Ennoshita was basically telling Kageyama that if he adjusted to the other spikers and gave them tosses that were easier for them to hit the same way he does for Hinata, he could let them play at their best and get around the block without having to rely on just speed.

The really sweet moment with Suga's last point is that daichi and Asahi, the other third years, realized it was going to be his last point and saw he was down and that's why Asahi told him to bring it to him and he'd make it count because he wanted to send him off on a high note. Daichi got the receive, suga set, and asahi got the kill so it was the third-year trio sending Suga off

Hinata and Kageyama are basically rivals rather than just friends. They work toghther in the same team to win, but also compete each other for every tiny things like which can go the club room earlier or which can eat the meal more lol. It's groundbreaking for Kageyama because he's never thought about what best fits his hitters. He's always analyzing and *deciding* in the moment what the best set for the situation is, even to the point that he's deciding what kind of hit should be made, thus robbing his hitters of their own agency. Basically, he sets the ball to the place *he* thinks will best result in his hitter getting the kill, rather than considering the idiosyncrasies and preferences of his spikers (which is what Oikawa does so expertly). If you remember, there has been - and will continue to be - a lot of talk about how Oikawa makes his hitters their best. Oikawa gives them the ball that will best maximize their skillset, rather than demanding they hit the ball to a specific location.
@lovelyleech93213 жыл бұрын
pretty much what he was saying was, Sugawara checks on the emotional status of his teammates, to make sure that their okay and what they need in order to spike the best they can. When he said 100% he meant the best way that the spiker can hit the ball. So he was telling kageyama if he would take care of his spikers to make sure their okay, and make sets that are the best for that person, he could make sure that the spikers can hit the ball the best that they can, in conclusion, "Suga does what he can to bring the best out of his teammates, resulting in better game play from that player. " (and also, netflix party is a good way to watch netflix with other people online btw :3)

Most people already commented on how Kageyama is learning that he should cater more to all hitters so each can hit at 100 percent, like Suga and Oikawa do. The only player that he's really given more special attention in working with has been Hinata to take advantage of the "freak quick attack." But even then, Kageyama's a bit narrow-minded still since Hinata's like a rookie. So this episode is for him to realize that he should be giving special attention to all hitters, that he can trust in the abilities of his team and utilize them just as well. Also, even though Kageyama and Hinata have fully acknowledged that they are teammates, they are still rivals. This is an ongoing thing throughout the whole story and one of the beautiful things about their friendship and growth. Even as they work hard together for Karasuno to do it's best in competing against other schools, the true rival which they keep working to defeat and overcome is each other. You get that sense when you always see them racing each other in training and the other odd little contests they hold between just themselves. This kind of relationship they have is what pushes them to do their best. As someone who has finished reading the manga, whenever I revisit these little instances, it just hits a little different.

Kageyama is a genius that could set anywhere and he also has the awareness to ascertain where his teammates are and where his opponents are on the court, so he sets to places where he thinks would have the least chance of being blocked, farthest away from the block and as quickly as he thinks his teammates can reach. Problem with that is spikers have their own tendencies(in this show at least, since I don't play in real life) some want fast and high (so they can battle with height) some want high and away(so he can bust through with strength) , some want high and slow(easier to judge, plan, take a breath), the show is saying if kageyama catered to the spikers more, they'd(spikers) be able to get around the blocks using their own specific skill set, their personal 100% capacity.

I think this episode has had the only translation issue that I’ve personally had upon rewatch so far... when Suga talks to the coach after switching back with Kageyama, it’s sightly more accurate to say that Coach Ukai uses the words “next time” and Sugawara was super happy to hear that he would likely get to play again. I kind of worried that the meaning might not hit the same way. But judging by your reaction, I think the feeling got through after all 🥰

I love the last point of this episode. Daichi passes, Suga sets and Asahi finishes. Their numbers being 1, 2 and 3. The epic scene of the third years. And at the beginnig when Suga first subs in he hits all the players Daichi, Asahi, Tanaka (Takonga), Tsukishima but then high fives Nishinoya. You can see in that scene the respect he had for Nishinoya because he was the only one that did not lose his composure so he did not need the Suga-bashing. :D

The team dynamic is a super interesting conversation. I've been coaching for over 10 years and as altruistic as I'd like to be I've found having a set starting line-up has always yielded the best result. Players are able to fit into a clearly definied system and add to it with their skills and strengths instead of the system changing to fit that week's starting line up. Identity is really important for team growth.

Oikawa and Suga are both high EQ setters who try to set the best ball for each individual spiker while Kageyama looks at the game from a technical level and puts the ball where he thinks will score the best (usually it means the fastest the ball can go to where there is no blockers) not realizing that not all spikers spike the same. Ennoshita (the person talking) was saying "hey you know our spikers are actually pretty good, they would even better when you get to know them as individuals with preferences".

At 25:30. I think Kageyama is realising that each spiker is different, so he needs to learn to toss the ball in a way that each spiker can work at 100% of their potential, like Oikawa does. In other words, he need to adjust his tosses to the hitters and not the other way around.

When Ennoshita was talking to Kageyama about if the Karasuno hitters were at 100% capacity they could get through any blocks he was referring to the fact that Kageyama sets but he doesn't accommodate for his spikers. Kageyama sets a ball and most of the time the spikers have to adjust to his sets at the moment versus Kageyama adjusting his sets for the needs of each individual spiker. It's also referring to the fact that Kageyama doesn't check in on his spikers during a match as Suga does. So, basically, what Ennoshita was trying to get across was if Kageyama were to check in on his spikers/positive feedback and accommodate to give them the sets they want wouldn't that put Karasuno's spikers at 100% capacity to face any blockers.

23:13 what enoshita was saying right before that moment was that suga takes every player's preferences and style as well as their overall mood into account. Kageyama often time does that with hinata but when it comes to the other players he just tosses according to what he thinks is best in the given situation. What enoshita is saying is that the players are pretty skilled on their own so if kageyama was to accommodate them properly and send them the tosses they want they could prolly fight better against the blocks
