I love Kenma. I honestly relate to him a lot. In high school I was on the swim team. Like Kenma I hated getting tired and did anything I could to skip laps. Which ended up making me gain time and get bumped from varsity to JV. After watching Haikyuu I definitely feel like if I had watched it sooner and seen Kenma in seasons 3 and 4 it would’ve been beneficial for me as an athlete and I would’ve seen that if I work hard I could overcome the fixed mindset I had since the end of my freshman season.

It's actually a very common trope in anime not to show the face of someone who is perceived as great or imposing until you finally meet them. Yeah, sometimes it's to not spoil a surprise, but more so I think it's a way of dehumanizing them so that's easier for the audience to perceive them more as the ideals they represent to the main characters.

I think part of the reason that we don’t see the Tiny Giant’s face in the anime (at least so far) is to maintain the mystery and intrigue behind this heroic figure in volleyball to Hinata, rather than giving him a face and a name and allowing us to see him as just another former high schooler! I think it really emphasizes just how much Hinata idolizes him and how much of an impact he has on Hinata’s current aspirations as a volleyball player

Spoiler Nekomas strategy limited hinata not kageyama, kageyama as a setter can send the ball to anywhere most of the time from any position, Nekomas strat though made it so kageyama couldn’t use hinata. Kageyama how ever can set perfectly from mostly any position from an overpass to the centerline he can cover, only time I can think of when kageyama had a hard time setting was against kamomedai where their serves and blockers made it harder for kageyama to use his attackers

Only serve that can really stop him is if it was a serve that was received and the ball didn’t go very high, but even then kageyama pulls off a wicked quick set in the kamomedai match (I can’t remember exactly which chapter it was all I remember is kageyama being low and pulling off a quick and tsuki going ugh the ball came to me and the blocker goes ugh a quick from there?), the point I’m getting at is nekomas plan didn’t limit kageyama, it limited his attackers and most importantly hinata, because a decoy that can’t atrack is not a decoy at all, what op was getting at is that the serves made it harder for him to set (which it didn’t, serves were literally just floaters in weird spots to either block hinata’s route with nishinoya or make him take a knee) sorry if this is long. TL:DR kageyama built different set any ball, nekoma cripple Hinata and others but not kageyama

I love how the overarching theme throughout the first half of the season has been that “you’re not alone on the court” and that “a good team of 6 has your back”. It’s no mistake that at the ending of every episode we see Hinata running alone, until the very last episode when we see that he’s actually running to his teammates and they start to run with him. They help him get over that enormous wall he always talks about!!! And I just think that’s great 😌

Hiding the face or silhouetting a character is a common technique in anime to make a character mysterious or seem larger than life. It's almost always done for a character who we will eventually see but the author wants to build up for a long time, so slowly revealing their personality or physical features while name dropping them occasionally helps build that intimidation and awe factor. It's sort of like a bunch of characters talking about a villain, or meeting a bunch of henchmen for a villain but never seeing them in person until a climactic final showdown. I don't think it's a spoiler to tell you that the implication of them hiding the Tiny Giant's face is that we will eventually see him in a cool and pivotal moment, since it's a trope that many anime viewers and japanese viewers would already be familiar with.

31:20 (Japanese teacher here) There are lots of words for "hooray" or "yaaasss!" or variations on that. Most of what Hinata says are variations on "yosh" "yoshi" "yosha" "yosssshhhhaaaaa", so most variations on that will work. It's very satisfying to yell if you want to try it yourself. :)

spoliers: I'm thinking further in the series, when hinata can spike with his eyes open. in the second season kageyama and hinata both do individual training to get to a point where the freak quick isn't something the team is reliant on. So in later games when it pops up it's either in a situation where the blockers are to slow to deal with it and then they don't really go back to it or they're kind of backed into a corner, like the serve receive putting kageyama in bad position. When the opposing teams are so good they had to get better.

Hinata's inexperience coupled with his GROWTH MINDSET drive the show throughout all its seasons. And the different characters' growth both on and off the court is so satisfying and wholesome, I love it. Unrelated: is it just me, or does anyone else get the urge to rewatch the whole of season 1 in a single sitting after watching Victoria's reaction videos??
