1991 is commonly referred to as the year that Grunge took over the top of the rock mountain from Hair Metal. However, Hair Metal didn't give up without a fight. In this episode, Ryan and I discuss Hair Metal during the Grunge Invasion, and detail what we think are the 20 greatest releases of the year. Come along for the ride!

In no particular order: 01. Katmandu - Katmandu 02. Badlands - Voodoo Highway 03. Bulletboys - Freakshow 04. Dangerous Toys - Hellacious Acres 05. Great White - Hooked 06. Dirty Looks - Bootlegs And not sure if live albums count, but 1991 saw the release of Fastway's Live: Say What You Will.

That Kane Roberts "Saints n Sinners" album was super hard to find in the music stores here in Ohio when it came out. I was a student at OSU living in Columbus, Ohio and I remember going to every music store I knew of trying to find a copy. I could find the self-titled one easily, but Saints was nowhere to be found. I asked around and one clerk said he had seen a used copy come through at one point and to keep stopping by from time to time. I never did find it in a store so I ended up ordering a CD Japanese import copy through an ad in Metal Edge magazine. I still have it to this day. Has lyrics and notes in both English and Japanese in the insert. You guys hit on pretty much all my fave bands/albums from 1991. Good show!

Kix was one of the best bands I ever saw live....... In a small venue. I have seen them 5 times, 4 of the best shows in a big bar setting. The one time I saw them in an arena they just were not as much fun and Steve's personal interaction just did not translate. They played as good as ever but that interaction with the crowd was just not the same.

Love seeing the Lillian Axe shirt one of my all time favorite bands. 91 was a special time for me I was a senior in high school. And just jamming out through my Walkman on football bus trips, lunch break, blasting tapes in my car on my way to and from school, hanging with my buds just listening to new albums. Great memories are intertwined with 91 albums probably more than any other year in my life. I'm just going to list 10 but probably with honorable mentions ha.. But just 10 is gonna be super hard cause I wore out a lot of tapes from 91. Here’s the best I came up with in an order pretty accurate for my taste however I absolutely loved all of them very much. And all of them are on my phone even now. I thought Big Game was great....ha Tuff wasn't a fan. I'm from the valley and never bought into them, I just thought they were trying to hard. Although I did like the All new Generation song... 1. Shotgun Messiah- Second Coming ( Harry Cody on guitar just ripped and I thought Ride the Storm was a way better ballad than Living without you.. ) 2. White Lion-Mane Attraction (I think the real highlights were: Lights and Thunder, War Song, Blue Monday, Broken Heart). 3. La Guns-Hollywood Vampires ( Loved how they chose to go way bluesier, pulling away from the sleazy glam.. Thought it was such a great top down cruiser) 4. Junkyard- Sixes, Sevens & Nines 5. Tyketto- Don’t Come Easy 6. Alice Cooper- Hey Stoopid 7. Fates Warning- Parallels 8. Badlands - Voodoo Hwy 9. Skid Row- Slave to the Grind 10. Mr. Big- Lean into It Very honorable mentions: Danger Danger- Screw It, Ozzy- No More Tears, Savatage-Streets, Dangerous Toys-Hellacious Acres, Great White-Hooked, XYZ-Hungry, Saigon Kick-ST,

I'll show some love to my old buddies KingOfTheHill, who released their self-titled debut in 1991. It was a big deal for us Saint Louis-based bands when they got signed, even though they didn't make a huge splash it was pretty cool when one of their videos would show up on Headbanger's Ball Jealousy from X Japan. This one is a tough sell because they sing in Japanese but they were basically Dragonforce 20 years before Dragonforce. Lita Ford- Dangerous Curves. "Shot of Poison" did okay as a single and video. Nothing groundbreaking, just Lita being Lita. Otherwise, you guys pretty much covered all of the highlights of 1991. Hair metal wasn't quite dead yet, but it was on life support. For all the fuss made about grunge, it pretty much died a quick death (in many cases, literally). Yet critics would have you believe it was this huge movement. And they were right, it was a huge movement. A bowel movement. Painful while it's happening and a big relief when its over.
@HairMetalGuru419
@HairMetalGuru419 2 ай бұрын
Okay, the bowel movement line had me laughing my ass off. As far as Kingofthehill, I LOVE the ballad "If I Say." But the rest of the album was a little too funk-oriented for me. Hey, thanks for watching and commenting, my man, I appreciate it.

I grew up with hair bands but by 7th grade it was grunge then alternative/pop punk. Rap and r&b really took over in 95-96. All four members of Poison had no problem with the Seattle scene, even Bret, whose closest friends included AIC's Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez. I've heard a lot of glam era icons say if not for Seattle, they probably would have not been able to spend time with loved ones as much as they wanted. And some had children they wanted to free up time to see.

Ryan said at 2:45 and You said at 3:45 I agree. I was 16 in 92 and I was abused as a kid, like if my stepdad found out I was watching MTV I got my ass kicked, so seeing Motley, Poison, Warrant etc. on stage was MY escape and it was exciting and then here came this godamn shit where they dressed sad and depressed, fuck that garbage shit! I lived that depressed shit as a child and it wasnt fun. Most of the kids I knew that listened to grunge and heavier metal that made fun of my music "hair metal/glam" were kids that had both parents and had all the new toys and lived in the good part of town, had dinner everyday etc. Touches a nerve with me.

1991 is probably the best year in Rock/metal. I think Ryan needs needs to open his ears a bit - he asks where are those bands now? Well Pearl Jam are currently selling out stadiums in US and Europe so..........I love both hair metal/rock and Grunge but will always lean towards pre-grunge metal/rock. Seb is a grade A dick but those 2 albums (even though I love the 3rd as well) are pure Gold! You missed LA Guns - Hollywood Vampires The Cult - Ceremony Metallica - The Black Album

Great episode! Here's a confession of sorts - As much as I have nothing but contempt for the wokeish subculture that arose from Grunge, I do own and still enjoy particular albums/tracks from that era. Alice In Chains will always be standouts, as well as the first Pearl Jam album, Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, and Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie double album. Keep in mind though that this is coming from a 50 year old guy with a collection of approximately 5000+ Cds encompassing everything from Hair Metal to Thrash, Death, Power, and Black Metal, to Classic Rock, Prog, Jazz Fusion, and Soul. So I have pretty diverse tastes and am kind of a tough one to easily 'box in'. Thing is, when that whole Grunge thing started I was about 17-18. To this day I remember how weird it was one week when I came in to school in the morning and - literally overnight - guys who had been wearing Poison shirts the day before were suddenly in plaid shirts and Doc Martens. LOL! It really was THAT sudden. Never seen anything like it before or since. And hey - I'll be honest, I soon followed suit! Nobodys perfect, right!?! LOL! My friends and I had always been the 'Heavy Metal guys' - I.e. Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer - but I was also the ONE who was deeply into Warrant, Slaughter, Danger Danger, Winger, and Trixter as well. So for me, adding this new 90s stuff to my repertoire was no big deal. I could never understand why ALL of it couldn't coexist, and frankly, I still don't get it. I mean, it's not like you want to eat the same meal every day, so why would you listen to the same music all the time!?! After all, music is food for the soul and different moods/states of mind require different flavours of tunage to satisfy. That said, at this age, in retrospect as far as the whole 'Hair vs. Grunge' war is concerned, while I can still appreciate certain offerings from the Grunge era, overall I don't feel it's aged very well. The positive tone and message of the Hair Metal bands is imo FAR more universal, memorable, and uplifting to anything that slithered out of that weird Seattle scene. At the end of the day, I think most people want to pump their fist to a catchy, pounding riff, or feel their heartstrings pulled by a soulful ballad than to wallow in the monodrone, shoegazing monotony of fake 90s suburban despair. For me, Hair Metal takes the win by a country fucking mile!I

Hey, Brother, thanks for the great comment. And I'm right there with you... not necessarily with the grunge bands, though I did like some of the songs. But, in the '90s I really got into bands like Soul Asylum, Collective Soul, Gin Blossoms, Smashing Pumpkins and shit like that. But I still followed and bought the releases from my favorite hair metal bands. What I hated about grunge was mainly the way they shit all over that genre of music... I thought they could all co-exist, but grunge was having none of that. Hey, man, you should start a channel... you obviously have a ton of knowledge about music! The only nice things I can say about "Grunge"... A) nirvana had some good punk rock. The stupid Grunge aspects are pure cheese, but their punk rock side was cool. B) Pearl Jam's "Ten" had some cool guitar work, like you can tell Gossard & Mccready had a big hand in the writing of the debut before Ed-Ved took over. C) Chris Cornel had an epic voice, but the music was boring and the darkness of the Grunge image is cheesy. Anyone who makes fun of the cheesyness of hair metal isn't paying attention to the cheesyness of Grunge and all the stuff that came after. Hair metal is at least fun, thank you guys for always bringing that up.

Grunge was underground music that wasnt made or intended for mass mainstream consumption and that only happened because the major record labels pumped lots of money into it. It was never meant to be stadium or arena rock. They're all dead because they werent cut out for the mainstream spotlight but they still took that major label money anyway so no wonder what happened. At the end of the day, hair metal and grunge were popular because the major labels signed these bands and sunk tons of money into them and that can not be disputed. Hair metal had more mainstream appeal but without that major label money and being played on the radio and MTV it still goes nowhere.
