Almost 6 years ago, I heard of the CGM and Deva. So much hype that hey! It was supposed to be better than sulfate/silicones. I fell for it and used Deva for a month. By the end of it my hair was dry, opaque and my curls were straightened. I had finished the minis of One Condition and No Poo, but threw away the heaven in hair masque. I stopped being CG last november and went back to my trusted old routine.

Healthy hair shrinks! I hope your shrinkage comes back soon! Hair is such a sensitive spot especially for people with naturally curly and kinky hair because we grew up with straight hair being pushed as most beautiful, and now some of us are just starting to embrace and love our natural textures. I feel for you having to learn your curls just for a product to destroy all the physical and mental hard work you put into caring and loving them. I hope your curls come back even better than before! Thank you for sharing your story and bringing awareness to devacurl, saving so many curly/kinky girls!

My hair has like a total lack of shrinkage and bounce/ elasticity. I don’t use DevaCurl but I have some health problems that made my hair thin out a lot. I bleach or dye it fairly often but I feel like it bounces back pretty well. I also don’t think these diy haircuts are doing my shape any good 🥴

I can totally relate,i'm mixed with black and indian.I grew up with my indian side of the family and was the only one with a big afro curly hair. My step mom didn't understand it and the comb used to break everytime my hair was combed.It was very traumatic,i would cry and she will hit me in frastuation.I would go to bed and pray to God that when I wake up I should have "beautifull"straight hair like my step sibblings. Then they would cut my hair and keep it short.When I was about 12,my step mom found out about hair relaxing and my hair would be relaxed every 3 months and I thought that my prayers were answered. I'm now 38 and stopped relaxing 15 years ago.I still get asked by my family why I'm not relaxing it or using a straightener,because to them straight is nice and clean and my curly hair looks "messy and dry".However i'm strong to stand up to that now.My 5 year old son has got hair like me and I always tell him how beautiful his hair is.However I would still get those comments from family about why don't u cut his hair?he looks much better with a hair cut.

I come from country where majority ( nearly all) of people have straight hair ( also quite thin) me including and many of us would love to wake up with forever wavy hair! and get rid of our natural grey-brown color and have them black, blond or dark dark brown. Is pressure from guys even cozmost of them here wants gf with long dark hair. But no - is like this. This makes me so sad seeing people have so many extreme hair issues I actually used the devacurl supercream on my hair about right before the scandal (thankfully only the travel size bc I don’t have money I’m only 14 so can’t spend so much) and it made my hair sooooo dry and brittle I also got headaches during class which was so annoying , my curls were so frizzy even though I take so much care of my hair but bc it was minimal compared to what others experience. I used masks and oils and treatments to bring it back I’m just glad my hair didn’t go through anything more extreme if I would’ve continued using devacurl.
@jesspagge4 жыл бұрын
I only used it for like 4 months and it was when I first started the curly girl method. They were my first ever products that I bought for my wavy hair. My hair just started transitioning when I used them so I didn’t know if it was actually damaging my hair but it was. My hair looked so bad and I was also losing a lot of hair too whenever I washed it. I also couldn’t make my hair look decent at all. I ended up washing it a lot more. At first I thought it was all just because I was transitioning. It would of made transitioning so much easier if I had never used them :( My hair is a lot better now though then it was when I used it though.

@xmusicaljulesx2854 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry that this happened. I actually been wearing hearing aids since I was 3-4 years old due to congenital hearing loss when I was a baby. It's a big adjustment that comes with time and being strong, resilient and rising above what you can Do. I often was very self conscious of it but learned that I need to let others know of my hearing loss to function. Don't be Afraid to do that. I am curious how Deva curl affected your hearing in terms of the science behind it and would love an in depth video on it. I suspect its due to absorption of the product through the skin or scalp that can damage hair cells in the ears. I actually looked up what chemicals can cause hearing loss. I would check that out. I stand with you on your journey of curly hair and hearing loss. If you need resources about hearing loss or the deaf/ Deaf community there are a few KZbinrs such as Rikki Poynter that vlogs what's Iike living with being deaf or even partially deaf. Signduo is another one of what it's like being a hearing/deaf couple. I hope this helps!

Yesterday I walked into cvs for a prescription after I left the hospital and saw a woman going to buy a bottle of devacurl, having her daughter read the label. She said she’d been dealing with thinning and dryness as she was getting older. I had to stop myself and inform her, then being her around the corner to healthy, curl friendly products and ask for her number to send her links and videos regarding devacurl and the misfortunes so many women and men have experienced. They shouldn’t have it on the shelves anymore! Anyone I see I will gladly go out of my way to inform and the desicion after that is their own. I’m just glad I was able to help a fellow curlfriend. You look wonderful, Ayesha. I’m glad your curls are slowly but surely coming back into what they once were. I just watched Not So Pretty. Thank you so much for coming forward and sharing your story. You are making such wonderful positive changes for all the women coming after you. You are beautiful inside and out. My family were exposed to radiation in the 50's - 70's and caused radiogenic illnesses. In the 80's I played in boxes full of dust from Dupont PFOS, C-8 etc. We are being poisoned every day in the water we drink, the chemicals were are sold and the pesticides on our food and the drugs in the animals we consume. It is scary to say the least. Please know you are not alone and we need people like yourself to start running for seats in congress. We won't stop these companies unless we are in the drivers seat demanding better of ourselves and our country. *YOU ROCK!*

I am almost speechless at the fact that this whole ordeal not only affected your hair, but that you have hearing loss over it. Devacurl should be beyond ashamed. You seem to have a much better attitude about things than I might under the same circumstances. Though I understand that you can't stay perpetually angry, and have to come to a place of acceptance, for your own mental health.

You are absolutely stunning!! You have made amazing progress, but you have spent countless hours on this process. I have 4 kids and that many hours in a day would be impossible, my priorities have to go elsewhere. Your hair is your livelihood though, so different situation/circumstance for you. Much success and I look forward to seeing your continued success. Well done to you! Btw when your video came out at the beginning of the year it saved me from making an appointment for my 10 year old daughter. She has super long curly hair way past her butt when stretched. I just started researching those products at the time some months ago when I saw the video, so thanks again for putting your story out there.

I'm so glad that you've posted this! I have been using deva curl for about a year and have seen SO much breakage and hair loss. I didn't realize it was likely the shampoo. Ive introduced daily vitamins, hair masks, and more into my daily routine assuming it must be my age or diet. I'm so ready to switch that product out now.

So happy for you! Do be careful, though. My DC damage was better 6 months in, but a year later it started to break off with normal protein exposure. It’s never done that before. It won’t be the same until it’s fully grown out.

My hair was SO thick and curly too - it started falling out and thinning when I began using devacurl about three years ago. My hairdresser insisted that devacurl was not the problem and it was my health so I took numerous tests which all came back negative... months later my hair is a third of what it was, I have severe acne, and I have really bad issues with digestion - I was put on a strict allergy diet and the only thing that stopped the bloating was to eat no gluten, rice, meat, dairy, or sugar lol so I did that until I just got sick of it and decided to put up with the painful bloating. I stopped using devacurl about 9 months ago and I am really starting to heal - I can eat rice without having to change out of my jeans, my hair is still so little compared to what it was but has gotten curlier (thank god) and my acne is no where near as bad as it was. When I look back now I am sure that everything I went through was just because of these disgusting products. The fact that I could have prevented all of it, JUST from changing my hair products, makes me so sad.

I believe you 100 percent. I didn’t use diva curl but there is something else that I did that went into my body that caused massive health symptoms that no doctor believes is true . Gosh your story is just like mine but with a hair shampoo verses something else I used not hair related. Anyways just wanted to remind you that you’re not crazy , chemicals do go into the body and wreck havoc . I’m so happier you’re getting better !

I used sulfate/silicones since I was 18 and I had shine, black and 3B curls. I didn't do what everyone does nowadays with thousands of products to get curls. Nooo... my routine was shampoo, conditioner, leave in and an oil. When I was 40 I heard of the CG and obviously was sold on the bs. I changed first to Deva. After a month, my hair was dry, opaque and my curls looked straightened. I had used up the one cond and no poo and I threw away the Heaven In Hair. I switched brands and stayed CG for almost 5 years. My hair stayed dry, opaque and my curls got more and more straight. The hair fell and thinned. I thought it was menopause or thyroid, but my tests came back ok. I am a health individual. Then I realized that I didn't have hair fall the days after I clarified my hair with sulfate. Last november I stopped CG and went back to my old routine. I am using black castor oil mixtured with peppermint, rosemary and tea tree in the scalp and hair as prepoo every 2 days. I am alternating between a sulfate (Nioxin) and sulfate free shampoo (albeit one with some mild surfanctants). I banned the co-wash only. I am using Shea moisture Jamaican black castor oil hair mask as well. I am still looking for ingredients, but sulfate and silicones aren't the enemies. The worst was that this whole thing makes no sense when you stop to think about it and I am a chemist. Well, I learned my lesson. Never fall for the hype.

@@Willowy13 Especially never fall for the hype when the person pushing it has their own financial incentives. Follow the money before jumping on any bandwagon. It's a hard but necessary lesson we can take with us to every aspect of our lives. God bless everyone and good luck.

Hey, I have celiac and crohn’s and I can relate to the strict diets! Yours might actually be more strict but if you want to lay off something it’s gluten and milk (not all dairy products) these might take away some of the painful bloating? Gluten and milk cause bloating and digestive problems to a LOT of people, even if their health is perfectly fine (no allergies, etc.) just try to lay off these two, hope you get well soon

Girl, how's it all going and how has your recovery journey been progressing? Has your hair improved? Did you end up cutting some, or all of it off? If you did, I bet it looks great! What products do you use these days that you would now recommend? Don't be afraid to share what's been going on and show off your hair, even if it's still not quite what it was a few years ago.
