The Haka is from the Maori culture but it is also about of the New Zealand identity. So it doesn't matter if you are a skinny white kid or a big islander kid. What matters is their Mana (pride) in what they represent when doing the Haka. We are Kiwis (New Zealanders) and the Haka is apart of our identity.

Kunfu Kenny are you saying the Maori culture is not apart of the NZ culture or identity? That the Maori should be seen as separate from the Kiwi culture? The haka is from the Maori, but the Maori is interwoven into the NZ society and our society is a modern multiracial/ cultural mix of "Kiwis", who do the Haka.
@Lou84mm

Being forced to do the Haka is wrong, no matter what the reason. I believe that when a person does the Haka it's because they are making a statement as an individual or as part of a group - of their own free will.

Heres the thing tho, things like the haka arent seen as a 'maori thing' but a 'kiwi thing'. So every boy and girl, regardless of ethnicity, learns to do a haka in school. Maori culture is a part of New Zealands entire identity, hence why we perform the haka during rugby games as a welcome and to set a challenge to face us.

Imagine if modern day armies did this during a war, like imagine this. In the distance it's all quiet, too quiet... Then you hear a man scream and shout, everyone is confused, a 10 second silent comes and then, you hear the ground shake and tremble as the yells and screams of men fly through the wind. This would be a good tactic to use effecting their mental state.

It is very difficult for that to happen when for most of your history you have operated under the premise of 'Less than...'. Native and African-Americans being less. The Haka is a source of identity and national pride for al New Zealanders.

You will NEVER see this here in America. I love the respect shown that each school does the Haka and that it doesn’t matter if the student is Maori or not. People in the US are so caught on race; I am not, but I am unfortunately reminded of my race by others daily. This was AMAZING to watch.

There's a difference between culture and race. The haka is part of new Zealand's culture it's came from a race and then is integrated as part of the culture. Everyone is human and equal to obtain new culture
@Naybean1

That’s so sad the US is like that. NZ welcomes all races with open arms (for the most part) and are truly proud of our Maori heritage. I went to the states for 4 weeks and didn’t see any racial discrimination but obviously I don’t live there so don’t know the struggles. I did realise that on our whole travels we only saw 1 place that represented the American Indians and that was in Vegas of all places. We went right across country too. Such a shame.

This is how seriously New Zealanders take rugby union: they show matches between SCHOOLS on national TV! (I doubt anywhere else on Earth does.) And you've got to love their commitment to honouring Māoritanga with the pre-match haka performances. The sheer gusto with which they do it is just brilliant!

The 'skinny white boys' didnt learn it because they wanted to respect maori culture. They learnt it because they are kiwis. The haka (and in fact a lot of maori culture) are built right into New Zealand culture, so every boy and girl learns it in school. And no self-respecing kiwi would ever turn away from doing a haka 😂 Ive noticed that a lot with american people, viewing it as one group trying to respect another group, when in fact were all just one big group 😁
