Something I like about this moment and about how Hal is written is general is that he can go from goofy, childish sitcom dad antics to completely lucid and emotionally intelligent at the drop of a hat if the situation calls for it. He doesn’t lose his sense of humor, but he’s very good about knowing when to apply it. That’s how he stands out from other sitcom dads of the time, his character flaws don’t come from thoughtlessness and ego, they come from his insecurity and general anxiety, and that’s way more entertaining to watch.

What I love about this show is there multiple moments just like this where a character will finally admit their feelings out loud, feelings that everybody has but nobody ever admits cuz they seem terrible, and you expect the other characters to be shocked or hurt, but instead they react as though it was blatantly obvious, and the issue was only ever admitting the truth to themselves.

I dont remember why this scene stuck with me for so many years but i never forgot that and always believed that a healthy relationship has a little bit of unequal amounts of love and that theres nothing wrong with that actually. Everyone has their boundaries they set and some are set further than others and that's ok because it creates balance. Doesn't mean they don't love you at all. Their boundaries are just set lower.
