Excellent video. I went through 6 months of Haldex hell following a diff rebuild and haldex service by an landrover expert. The haldex was failing to release cleanly leading to loud bangs and screaching sounds through the transmission. The expert garage removed and flushed the unit several times and it would be OK for a few miles and then play up again. I noticed I had an oil leak from one of the diff driveshaft oil seals. On checking the diff oil level it was well above the filler level. I took the Haldex out myself and discovered that the oils seal between the diff and haldex was not set at exactly the right depth and not perfectly level, I suspect that fluid/oil was able to transfer from the diff to the haldex and vice versa despite the complex seal design. The small tell tale hole at the bottom of the housing was obstructed by the incorrectly postioned seal. So I repleced the oil seal using the proper LR tool. I also replaced the filter with one from you and used Febi Bilstein fluid (I believe the garage used Land Rover). After that my issues went away. I will never know for sure if it was the oil seal, a bad filter or perhaps the use of LR fluid. But what I do know is that the bits I got from you work.

Diff oil also makes them scrabble, thus if the haldex coupling is either filled with diff oil, or is getting cross contaminated from the diff chamber then you will get the scrabbling problem. Well done on solving your problems! A dedicate diyer is ofter more capable than the garage industry. I salute your dedication :)

Excellent explanation video 👍 I'm having this problem with my 2010 Volvo XC90, also after having the diff rebuilt. The haldex was serviced at the same time by the Landrover specialist that did the diff and a new pump fitted, but this issue developed a few months later. I've purchased the valve from yourselves already, after doing the trial test of unplugging the module, symptoms disappeared when unplugged, just finding time now to get it in the garage and stripped out. Fingers crossed 🤞👍

@sandancersentinel7423hi Steve, yes I fixed the problem, changing the valve inside the haldex, fresh oil and another new filter, blowing all of the oilways out with an airline before fitting the new parts. Seems fine now 🤞 I bought all of the parts from autofaultfinder (this channel) highly recommended, very knowledgeable guys! Hope this helps, Cheers, Neil 👍

Hi Mat. Is it possible to get some sort of cleaner into the accumulator by soaking / spraying judiciously in one of the galleys and position the unit to soak both sides of the piston removing the possible gunk build up? Or Would it be possible to force the accumulator to exercise pushing a cleaner instead of oil to do like a flush on the bench without damaging the pump etc. then drain, flush with oil and then reassemble and fill properly? I’m not juddering but wish to pull down my Haldex and just give it a full once over and prevent / eliminate anything preventatively as it’s never been serviced and is at 60k now and I’m getting a hear whining sound from somewhere so going to go through all fluids and services first. Thank you for an excellent informative video.

Hello! watched your video! thank you very informative. I have a Freelander 2 2008 Haldex 4 and I can’t fix my Haldex, the pump works constantly and blocks the rear wheels when turning, it works for 5-10 minutes and error P0961-62 pops up for the valve. Could this mean that the accumulator piston is jammed and is not releasing pressure? I disassembled the clutch and washed it, changed the filter, installed the original Volvo, changed the electric valve, checked the microcircuit, changed the oil again. Can the pump constantly pump into the electric valve due to a jammed accumulator? thank you for your work 🤝

Thanks for the excellent informative video! It's clear now why the accumulator is so very difficult to clean effectively. Would be possible to clean the unit using an ultrasonic bath after it's stripped down as much as possible but with the spring safely in place?

You can try, but normally the plastic barrel that the accumulator piston slides down is scuffed and thus sticks.

Hi , brilliant video . I've a 2014 Metropolis that has an issue when setting off on low friction surfaces, with TR in road mode if accelerate on mud or snow I get a vibration and noise from the rear. It sounds like a metal on metal as if the clutch pack is dry. It had a new valve solenoid filter and oil last year. I've also noticed a slight vibration at around 40 mph. It fine when driving in tight turns on a gravel surface. Have you come across this before?

Excellent video and explanation of the AWD system- and diagram. I have a message on fault code "C0407 -AWD oil pump motor - slip detected". I assume this means the clutch is slipping but it doesn't tie down the cause well enough. It could be the clutch itself of course, but the reference to the oil pump suggests that the pressure of the oil to the clutch piston is too low (or variable)? Does this point to the need for a new pump or a good clean? This could also presumably be because the control solenoid is not working properly, or the accumulator has failed or the whole thing needs a thorough clean and maybe a new filter? Can you suggest the best (most economic) route to choose based on your experience of most likely causes of component failures and servicing issues? Done 78000 miles since 2014, never been serviced to my knowledge although have a FSH. Really appreciate your advice Brian
@autofaultfinder4839
@autofaultfinder4839 9 ай бұрын
Pump Motor - Slip Detected.... its expecting a certain target current, lets say 2.5 amps, but it's only making 1 amp. This is how that code is triggered. Either there is no oil to pump, or the pump head doesn't work, or there is a leak inside. e.g. it is not hitting the target pressure it expects. Pump Current = Pumping Pressure

@@autofaultfinder4839 Thank you for the explanation. Since sending out the original message I had the Haldex unit serviced IE new filter and oil. Had the pump taken out and cleaned. Had the back axle diff oil changed as well. Unfortunately the garage who did the work couldn't check the pump current so I still don't know whether this is the cause of the problem and I am still getting the two messages "service All Wheel Drive and Service rear axle". The car is still driving really well so I am continuing to drive it. Can you measure the pump current? Can I book it in? Brian

Many thanks for this great video. Could you please give any advice how to remove pressure accumulator cover? If i have shuddering in small speed when i turn fully wheels, does it mean, that there is issue with haldex or eLSD, because haldex itself connects only rear tyres, but eLSD can block the tyres separatelly. 68k they are way past filth!! Really they want oil, filter and pump clean every 25/30k. Many Gen 4 Haldex pump fail around 50 to 60k. Haldex is a dirty system, clutch material and moisture emulsify to make the gunge you find.

Ho, very nice video about the haldex system. I'm having a problem with my Haldex gen 4 Elsd diff on a Saab 9-3. Maybe you can help me a little bit. The problem is when driving( most noticeble at constant speeds and straight roads) i feel a slight judder for aprox 1 second. It repeats every 30 seconds. Is it possibly a faulty valve that instead of returning the oil to the sump, sends some to the piston which compresses te clutch disk briefly? Thanks in advance!

HI Mathew, would this problem present itself if driving in a straight line? My haldex causes a juddering at 1200 rpm, no matter what gear i am in.. this occurs when on very light throttle. It occurs when driving both straight and whilst cornering. It also only occurs when the outside ambient temperature is above 12 degrees centigrade... my thoughts were that it could be an ECU problem? Thanks

This doesn't sound like a Haldex issue as the haldex turns at different speeds depending on road speed. An issue at only 1 engine speed and any gear is more likely to be engine or fuel related.

The fluid was clean before I replaced it and the noise seemed to go away for a few miles after the fluid change but it returned. That’s great thanks and understood! I never touched or swapped the couplings in the end, so the diff off of the 2008 XC which is now on the 2009 has the Gen 3 diff/haldex and its own/original ECU… No lights came up on dash whatsoever, so I’m hoping the vibration at 70MPH at 2000 revs or when car is under load is unrelated to the job I did here! I suppose the car’s ECU has accepted the GEN 3 instead of the original GEN 4 as there’s no dashboard lights, but concerned if the transmission has accepted it too? In layman terms! On the contrary, I would like to send the original Gen 4 Diff/Haldex to get it overhauled, in case this diff in situ ever pack’s up! Do you have a firm or do it yourself or can you recommend anyone? Cheers & thanks for help!

Check the oil in the Haldex system which holds about 600 mls of Haldex oil - a special oil which differs from other transmission oils. Volvo Haldex oil can is labelled AOC ( Active on Demand Coupling) and other labelled Haldex or H - 4 oil. IF the garage fills the system with normal gear or transmission oil the Haldex cultch unit will not work. Most garage mechanics were unaware of this fact and filling up with normal transmission oil.
