I do enjoy watching these videos on fault finding. Mainly because I don’t have to find the fault myself!!! I have been in this situation many time!!! It’s the “Where do you start!” You don’t want dismantle the whole house as you have only got to put it back together! I’m not sure if i would prefer a lighting circuit or sockets? Sockets tend to be more “DIT’ed” but you just never know what the cable run will be!!!!! All the while the customer is going to ask “How much is it going to cost?” And when you have fixed it eventually and found say a junction box with a neutral touching earth and its takes 10 minutes to rewire it and you present an invoice for the entire day. Then you get “That only took you 10 minutes to fix???” Customers just don’t understand the level of stress and resilience that goes into finding the fault!!

Hello Dave and Nigel my best you tube sparks the best episode yet fault finding is a pain in the posterior you can spend hours and days trying to sort a problem out easier to rewire the circuit if of course you can get room to install new cables for the faulty circuit holes and more holes at this point i would just demolish the whole ceiling would make the job easy to get at you need the patience of a saint well done in sorting it out lads top rank.

The trouble with this sort of thing is rewiring is obviously best, but tenants are living in there and it will be a massive disruption to pull known good feeds in. For now, we want to keep it ticking over and talk the owner around to thinking of some long-term planning to get it sorted out properly.

Another great piece of detective work in a shambles of an installation - enough to make any saint swear. I have a Progressive Electronics 200EP to trace hidden cable runs in ceilings and walls. It consists of an audio generator, which outputs a warbling tone, and an inductive amplifier with built in speaker. The audio generator is connected to live and neutral at one end of the cable, and then the inductive amplifier detects the audio tone - the louder the sound the closer you are to the cable. The only downside is that all loads need to be disconnected on one side, and you can get inductive coupling between cables in other circuits where they run close together. However it has saved me a lot of time tracing cables where there was no obvious route, and located ends of cables on second fix where the back box has been plastered over or not cut out.
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 жыл бұрын
I have a warbler too Steve and it does come in handy, although I doubt in this kind of installation it would be able to point us at much. We've lowered ceilings here, so most of the wiring isn't just above the plasterboard you can see, it's above a second level of boarding behind it!

Hi David.. The ground floor lighting in my house was actually done as a loop . What issues for an EICR could be genuinely be raised in your opinion . I think the hall light was supposed to be on its own leg so it could illuminate even if the downstairs lights tripped. The sparky that popped by to look over the house said that the circuit would have to be changed as its not acceptable or something. Look forward to your thoughts . Regards Don Codman

sorry you have the 'bug', and hope you have a quick recovery. Contrary to your perspective I thought that this was really very instructive. I thought that the way you guys approached it was very informed, and I tend to agree that a problem is likely to reoccur despite you finding 'a decent solution' to a 'tricky problem'. I do wonder if the circuits are still connected to the house above in some way. Really excellent and 'informing'. You guys at your best in showing a difficult 'site' problem. My thanks.
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 жыл бұрын
What this place needs first is a proper EICR - not the Mickey Mouse paperwork our rivals submitted that failed to mention anything about cross-connected circuits and showed obviously fake IR numbers as being off-the-chart. Because these are false ceilings, most of the wiring is behind the original ceiling above what you see here, so it's a difficult one to find and break down circuit wiring.

Odd how the fault flipped from one side to the other so definitively. One minute it tested on the bedrooms, the other it was between the hall and kitchen. We must have disturbed or changed something, but I couldn't say what or how. The testing was logical: reads good and works without the bedrooms, reads bad and trips with the bedrooms. Then it was suddenly reads good at the bedrooms, reads bad and trips at the hall and kitchen!

You suggested putting lights on power circuit. Can you do that. Are the cables too small for a power circuit. I am an apprentice and just learning. Thanks
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 жыл бұрын
We could have cut off the feed for the downstream lights and then run them off a power circuit so long as we fused them down at the point where we pick up the power. This is quite common in conservatories when they're added to a house - rather than tap off power and lighting, they're often spurred from the sockets with a light or fan light fused down on a switched spur. Here, it was a no-go as the downstream lighting was cross connected back into another lighting circuit somewhere else.

Hi Dave and Nige, from an old spark from the 60's. I hope you get well soon Dave, this Covid is a nasty piece of work. Regarding your Video, on the contrary to being boring I found it rather , interesting and captivating you did well to sort that crap out, I wonder if a signal tracer might help in the future to pin point the cable runs, I may purchase one just to see if it works? to be perfectly honest a rewire is the only solution, the puzzle is the fault transferring from one circuit to the other, I will have to view the video over again to see what if anything you did that could have transferred the fault over after dismantling the light fittings. Keep up the long vids they excellent in my opinion. Peter.

Hi David just a quick question. Why the push for RCDs on sockets particularly for portable equipment use outside, would having an plug top type RCDs on things like lawnmowers and even power tools like drills be a better option and cheaper ?
@havoctrousers
@havoctrousers 2 жыл бұрын
People simply won't use portable RCDs if they aren't aware of or don't care about electrical safety. Also, the push for RCDs on circuits that are likely to serve mobile equipment was in the 16th edition of the regs, which was last amended in 2004 so it's not a recent thing!

@@Dog-whisperer7494 from a safety perspective, plugtop RCDs on outdoor equipment are a great solution. If the question is "will an electrician give me a satisfactory EICR if I have a circuit that obviously serves outdoor equipment without an RCD", the answer is most likely no. This is because all of the guidance on EICR coding is to give a C2 for non-RCD protected sockets likely to serve mobile/outdoor equipment.

It bears repeating as other have said this kind of frustrating fault finding are excellent. The frustration and head scratching are part of the appeal - it’s real world data gathering. On the fluctuation of the IR tests on your two visits well I suspect temperature and moisture had a part to play. Super experienced motor testing experts always carry these two types of additional instruments to provide a complementary baseline to the IR test. I think here we could have used some different types of IR testing that are the Provenance of motor testers. I would have done a time IR test that really is a great tool to plot the IR time curve to give a real assessment of the condition of the wiring and doing so I believe would have given you a better assessment that the wiring condition across the house was actually consistently poor. Of course there is always the deeper issue of conformal invariance of current phase transitions that can impact poor condition wiring at different times that’s a deeper argument and requires a whole lot of maths to explain. And I mean fields medal maths😱. Keep up the great work. Coming back to blighty soon to see mum and dad need advice on a good AFDD board for them.

Trouble is, it may not be a deliberate cross-connect. 0.95 Ohm is low and suggests a copper to copper connection, but I've no idea where that is and how it's been made. I wouldn't want to disconnect cores to rely upon it and besides, running a line without an adjacent neutral or CPC would leave an electric field around the cable that isn't neutralised and that could cause problems of its own.

Firstly, get well soon Old Chap. Lots of warm brandy to ease the cough and asscoiated sore throat will help no end. I've enjoyed your last 3 vids as usual but not got round to commenting on how I still look forward to you new releases, apologies. This fault finding one, as has been said by others, is very enjoyable. I wonder if the mystery might be related to a 2 gang mis-wired strapper between two circuits? This time you turned up to the flat the affected switch was in the opposire position to the last time. I can't think of any other reason it would happed. If you're off work you will be able to post vids shorter than the 4 week intervals of late...... otherwise we have to watch Bundy or Cory! Only kidding.... they're great as well but in a different way. Cheers! P.S. Does your "BuymeaBeer" deliver? 😉😉

Wish I could explain it Olly. The odd thing was we did track down a definitive fault on a feed between two rooms, and with that section of cable replaced, things were back in the black. But that cable was in operation and tested as working when we arrived. It's all too odd. Sorry about the slow upload schedule of late. Hopefully I'll have a little something out tomorrow too.

41:00 Interesting, it's unusual to have 2 circuits with interconnected neutrals, each protected by its own RCBO, without one or both of them tripping every time anything is switched on.
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, well, these circuits are paralleled off the same RCBO which is why there's no trip. They are separate circuits, each serving a different area, each with its own unique impedance and insulation resistance characteristics, but a cross-connect between them means the company who installed the CU had to bung them together on the same RCBO, otherwise there would indeed be tripping issues. Indeed, as the earlier EICR and board change paperwork didn't mention any of this, I presume the company performing the CU change stumbled across it during functional testing and found they had to shoehorn them together on-the-fly.

What I always hate about these type of faults is the customer comment of 'it must be satisfying to find it at last'. Well no not really, I've just wasted my entire day on your shit wiring. And extended its life until the next bloody fault. Nicely caught on video, Dave.

Why the FOOK am I watching this!? I deal with this shit day in & day out! Also when looking for a cable run - I find using a circuit tracer gives you an idea where it routes.
