Our son Jacob is entering Filipino school for the first time. We follow Jacob and vlog his first days at school. What are the struggles, how does he feel about going to school, does he know the national anthem, can he even speak bisaya?
As concerned parents we will discuss our emotions, our fears about bullying, being on time, the length of time in class. What else will our white half-half kid encounters attending school in the Philippines for the first time. Jacob was born in the Philippines to a Filipino mother and Australian father. We feel as if we are living the sweet life here in south Cebu, Philippines.

I'm 17 years old and I'm half Filipino, I studied in the Philippines for 6 years. When I was in first grade, I was having trouble speaking Tagalog and often failed in our school activities, that continued until 3rd grade. Since then, I can speak our native language fluently. My experience living in the Philippines is very fun and I really enjoyed a lot, I was making friends, I experienced being bullied from one of our class in the 5th grade, but after that, the next year of class, I didn't experience being bullied again. After my elementary, we moved back here in Texas. And I can proudly say that theres not much to worry studying in the Philippines, most classmates are good.

I'm half japanese and half filipino. I studied in the Philippines from Elementary to grade 8 and I didn't experience any discrimination and bullying from my classmates. I only experienced bullying at school when we moved to Japan. Japanese people are not that open when it comes to diversity unlike the Filipinos. Filipinos are friendly.

Yeah I relate I’m Filipino and the the type of bullying in my school is saying bad words they say it often but it’s improved so they don’t say it often. If they say a bad word someone will come to our classroom bc there’s a hidden microphone ( 3 people that are behaved are told there’s a hidden microphone but we are not allowed to say it)

Public schools in provinces when they see someone different they are just curious and interested, they are also scared interacting with him because he's a foreigner and they don't have an idea and they will avoid him for that. But, if they get used to him, surely he will gain friends. Unlike private schools where entiled kids and brats are, public schools, have less or even don't have one. I hope he will overcome the laguage barrier 'cuz that's the one he's going to struggle of and not bullying.

But my cousins studied in the Philippines so when I went back to visit them I was impressed with how kind and organize the school was , especially when my other cousin who was half British moved to Philippines to study and live was having the best time in the Philippines. I've understand the Tagalog , bisaya language since I was 6 but it was very difficult for me due to the fact I need to learn 5 languages all at once 💀

It’s good that you’re enjoying life in the Philippines. I was born and raised in the Philippines and I can assure you that Filipino kids are not bully and nasty. Filipinos in general are loving and generous- something I missed the most after living in Los Angeles for years. Simple and happy life where kids respect and adore their parents are the norms in the Philippines.

There are lots of bullies in school but may I say that it is part of it. You may either you misinterprete them as bully or you did not handle them well. Boys will always be boys, different traits different personalities... Some will later be your friends, others you have to avoid. That is part of growing up

Bullying in this country is very common. I've seen people being bullied for being slightly different. Fortunately I wasn't bullied, since was bigger and taller than my peers, and had some experience in combat sports for a while. The point is Filipinos bully, every country has their own bully.

Hi Mr. Blair. God bless you. Thank you for being open minded about the filipino culture. Having decided to put your kid to a filipino school is a wise decision you made. Believe us sir, nothing is more beautiful than having your kid learn good filipino manners. it may be crude and sometimes retrogressive by a foreigners standards but your kid will learn the beauty of life's hardships will propel him for better things. He will learn to appreciate small things and progress in life

My little brother is Filipino but he is more comfortable speaking English. No one taught him, he basically just learned it on his own from watching KZbin videos. We mostly talk to him in Cebuano but also mix it with English here and there but he responds in English most of the time. By the time he started going to school, he learned pretty fast how to speak in our native language, Cebuano. Although it's not straight and perfect Cebuano but he did learn even the 'deep words' ones. So I agree with your statement.

I’m half Filipino who has went to school in the Philippines from Elementary throughout high school. I started when i was 10. Back then, there were lots of bullies. I gotten beaten up by male classmate. I had a hard time adjusting , I felt like the days were much longer there so I felt more tired going home. I’d say I became fluent in Tagalog within 3 months , crazy right ? I think it was that I was sooo young , I picked it up very easily. Now I am fluent. I can speak, read, and write in Tagalog and I understand my culture. I wouldn’t be the same person I am today if I would have never to went to school there. I consider myself more Filipino than American.

My brother and I are half Australian half Filipino too. Neither of us really look Asian and we didn't go to school in the Philippines but we did spent a lot of time there as kids in the 80's and 90's. Initially I think we were a novelty around the village, where kids would stare and nudge each other but it was just curiosity, nothing more. Once that wore off we were just like any other village kids, pestering the shopkeeper for watusi and plastic balloons, joyriding in our uncle's sidecar and keeping the pandesal vendor in business. Filipinos are wonderful people, I would not expect any bullying whatsoever :)

It's fine, the kids have a nice tan and don't look too foreign (which is not so much of a problem in the Philippines either). Filipinos kids are not as homogenous as say Koreans were there might be bullying even with a slight phenotypical difference.

Simple province school. But very beautiful and clean. I know they have the best teachers on that side of the Philippines. Very serene and green.

Turuan mo anak mo mkipagkaibigan. Ganun lang

I just stumble on this video and got curious, 5 minutes of the video and decided to subscribe, i wanna be part of your wonderful family especially Jacob's journey and get to know more about him and his sibs every vlog.... thank you for sharing, as a half foreigner half filo myself i am really grateful my parents raise me in the Philippines as well, Being in Spain even my cousin's there see and treat me differently not all of them but i can feel and see it clearly and being a FILO I'm unbothered by it but I also don't tolerate so i'm good and doing well, I hope Jacob adopts quickly and make tons of friends, he's charming so he's definitely gonna be a favorite....

It brings back my memories in elementary school when I was at your son’s age . Monday to Friday we sung BAYANG MAGILIW and PANATANG MAKABAYAN morning and before dismissal by end of the day . There were fighting between Filipino pupils caused by envy or teasing or any unpleasant behavior of other students ,
