I don't know exactly how much absolute control Peele had over the production, but the exposition monologue felt like something that producers demanded he put in. Personally, I would have been 100% fine with no explanation whatsoever; it's clearly more about the metaphor and the imagery than it is about the logic. But I also understand that even an incredibly effective, well-crafted movie will put general audiences off if it leaves large portions of its plot unexplained. Great movie, tho. You guys didn't talk about the music or the sound. That was something I noticed and really loved while watching it.
@DriscolDevil5 жыл бұрын
That does make sense, but who knows, maybe it was him that thought audiences would be confused or annoyed without it.
@DrDingleDangle5 жыл бұрын
That's what killed it for me. It was a solid 4-star movie to me until the plot sucked me out of it. There's just too much that doesn't make any sense. I would have loved for a lack of explanation like Jay mentioned with the ...of the Dead series or the Silent Hill games.
@jacoblevenson79345 жыл бұрын
I can't honestly see the metaphor for class struggle in the film. The fact that there was no interaction or exploitation of the tethered makes the argument for class metaphor to be impossible.
@Kullen645 жыл бұрын
Brian Holmes There IS a lack of explanation. Yeah, she tells them what they are but that’s all you get. There’s way more they could have delved into and I’m glad they didn’t. I actually think Jordan Peele did this himself. I saw a lot of dumbasses on Facebook and whatnot who tried way to hard to create fake theories for Get Out and it ruined the movie for a lot of people and turned off some from watching it. He even said himself that people were over analyzing it. This was his way of circumventing that.

I really think _Us_ would've benefited from being more vague in its explanation or having a supernatural explanation that didn't beg so many questions. I know it doesn't bother everyone, but for me, the logical problems are almost all I can think of when I think about _Us._ I think it really hurts the rewatchability of the movie. It's harder to take the tension and danger of the earlier scenes as seriously when you know the explanation doesn't make any sense.

I’m with you. Especially that last shot *SPOILERS* With the chain of people crossing mountains, I just threw my hands up. I guess they do have a copy of everyone on the planet. And they all got matching jumpsuits, gloves, and scissors. I also don’t totally understand the “shadow” thing. Like sometimes you can control your opposite with movements and other times they give no shits. They also lost me a bit with the main family’s copy being very dramatic with their sit down, while the other family just walks in and stabs them all.

@@afriendinthevoid6522 SPOILERS Also, one thing that annoyed me most was the lack of stakes. Like, after they don't kill the dad multiple times when he clearly should have died, you know that nobody is ever in any real danger. I never felt worried for any of the main characters in this "horror" movie.

"Ambitious but sloppy" is an accurate description of Us. Peele did a great job using the originality of the premise to pull off some thrilling and suspenseful scenes. However, I felt that the material got out of control. It is one thing to nick-pick logical gaps in the story, it is quite another to point out that these gaps meant it was difficult to follow the narrative. There were times in which I was unable to relate scenes to the wider story, lessening the emotional payoff. It's a shame, too; I really felt this could have been something special.

Finally got around to seeing Us, and the twist was so obvious I'm honestly wondering if it was even intended to surprise the audience at all. I called it as soon as the opening scene closed with the two girls in the mirror house.

I like that Santa Cruz is "this little small beach town" to Mike. But I'm VERY disappointed that Jay didn't pick up on the line about "they're filming a movie over on the carousel" which would've been The Lost Boys.

@@brunovega6479 The Stuff was the first movie in the trilogy you dingus. Seriously tho, there is an actual horror movie called "The Stuff" which I think was trying to be like "The Thing" as it had a semi-similar monster and twist. We just need one more "The [insert vague term here]" to round things out into a nice even three and we're good.

I'm the complete opposite, I enjoyed Us until the twists and turns started happening. I was perfectly happy with this being a story about bizarro people that have come to torment their mirror selves. Once the twists started happening and things actually started being explained it became borderline tardid for me. It also, deflates all tension for repeat viewings while an ominous group of dark doppelgangers would still be just as scary.
