Just watched cabin in the woods last night and was glad to see RLM reviewed it! I really enjoyed it having gone in mostly blind! Pretty clever satire of the Horror genre I feel like Mike isn't appreciating the 'meta' aspect of it. This large corporation is appeasing the *audience* with cliche Horror tropes. We are the ones who have dictated the beats that horror movies need to hit. In a sense we are the Old Gods that must have regular sacrifices of young kids in stupid situations (it's different in Japan) to 'sate our thirst'. Things going according to planned in horror movies are what we demand as the audience.
@doctorbrown59572 жыл бұрын
I had somehow never even considered that aspect of it, and I already really enjoyed the movie. I'm gonna have to rewatch it.

that is the whole point of the movie, it reference it quite openly: every SUMMER (as in summer movie) the old gods (horror movie audience) have to be pleased (get box office revenue), so every year its a challenge of what genre (Japanese Horror, Monster Horror, Gore Horror) will "win". And the filmmakers hate to force the characters to make stupid decsisions, since we, the audience expects certain tropes.

@CosmicWaltz73 ай бұрын
@@greybearddnd2417 I don't think that's it. For one, the audience doesn't dictate a formula, nor does it benefit from the box office return. People will try new explorations of a genre, and genre styles that become too formulaic dry out after a while - westerns, romance films, gross-out comedies, et cetera. I think the Old Gods are the production studios. They're the ones that get together every summer to dictate the same exact thing needs to be made based on a formula that makes the most financial returns, even if the audience doesn't enjoy it. The reviews can be through the floor, but that doesn't matter - all they care about is how many people pay to see it. If the producers aren't pleased by a creative team following their notes and polling data, that team suffers and may even collapse - killing any spark of something original for the sake of the almighty formula. This movie even shows that in a way, as the film was entertaining and successful while breaking the established horror formula. Audiences will try something new if it's from a genuine place of inspiration. But, in-universe, even though there were more sacrifices than ever when the office got overrun, it didn't matter to the Old Gods - the humans didn't do it "the right way", even though it was more successful. Their world was still destroyed because it didn't follow a strict guideline to success. I don't think it was cynical towards the masses, but to the industry overhead.

I feel like they kind of missed the point of Cabin In the Woods. The Dark Gods are watching what amounts to a horror movie, but they will only be satisfied with the "movie" follows the stereotypical horror movie plat that they have come to expect. It's all a big spoof on how we as a horror movie audience have an expectation and get angry if it isn't met. Poetic then that a lot of people didn't like the movie specifically because it didn't follow the pattern that the move makes fun of.

They explain in Cabin in the Woods why the gods in the movie go for horror movie tropes. They want their victims to experience the maximum amount of terror before they die. At first they were just guessing, but once humans invented horror movies, they started researching them assuming this is the stuff that scares humans the most. That's why the Japanese operation is based on J-horror instead of Western horror. Of course the subtext is that the gods are us, the audience.

The stooges are more or less the apex of physical comedy. Unapologetic and ridiculous yet consistent with how the physicality would flow. They were pros and sadly the genre has fallen away in the wake of well, woke. You can't have someone get hurt and laugh at it anymore, moronicly enough you REALLY can't hurt someone's feelings. That's why comedy is suffering so much, the best we can get is the few people well versed in crucifying themselves. Because who can dare laugh without being given permission.

Hiring them to assassinate that guy going wrong was comedy gold in my opinion. However “The don't try this at home” ending is one of the weirdest things I’ve seen in comedy. It’s so weird and distracting. I also find it distracting how this film is afraid to hurt women. They literally bring in a male nun just so they can have jokes where a nun gets hurt. I found this element of the film to be the most distracting when the female antagonist has a lobster thrown at her and nothing happens. It sounds like the setup for a Home Alone joke. So I find it strange when the lobster doesn't bite her.

Honestly a lot of the "Things that don't make sense" that Mike and Jay were talking about in Cabin in the Woods was blatantly explained in the movie itself. "Why can't they just get five people into a room and execute them?" It's explained that they are doing this in order to act out the specific ritual of sacrifice that the old gods want. The old gods don't want just murder, they want this specific thing. "This particular sector, with these particular gods, just happens to be under this cabin in the woods" Mike seems to be insinuating convenience about how the cabin is directly over the sector and the old gods and such. When, in the movie, it's very clear that the cabin and that underground area were created artificially. It's not that there just happened to be a cabin there, they built that cabin. "Why all the ritual with the horror movie genre" It's blatantly said, explained for several minutes I think, that the tropes of our modern horror movies are left overs from the actions of these rituals which have been going on for all of history. The movies are acting out ideas or tropes that have been ingrained in our cultural history to the point that we don't even realize it. Honestly, it kinda just seems like they either weren't paying much attention or that they just didn't understand.

We’re the gods in cabin in the woods. The audience. Horror movies follow specific horror tropes because that’s what the audience wants, and if the audience doesn’t get what they want, they destroy the film “the world”. Weavers character is literally called the “the director”, and it’s her job to give the gods “audience”, exactly what they want. And every country/culture has their own type of horror. Japan ghosts, Scandinavia had trolls/creatures, and both those films ended with happy endings, and not a lot of death, thus enraging the gods ”audience “

When I saw the commercial for The Three Stooges my thoughts were "Really? Well, if they're going to have to pull a nostalgic thing out of their assholes, it may as well be one that was already ruined from the start. You can't really break what's already broken."
@awandererfromys1680 Жыл бұрын
_Cabin In The Woods_ was very similar to an SCP-001 entry imho. An omnipotent being comes to Earth and to stop it from destroying Earth the Foundation comes up with this highly convoluted, completely irrational, and morally questionable ritual to appease it. Why it works no one knows because no one can truly know the mind of a cosmic entity. Cool premise, fun movie.

"Somebody ruining Star Wars is something to get upset about." Mike is like a film prophet. I've been watching a lot of older RLM stuff lately and there's some great off-hand jokes and comments that are coming true.

They pretty much say in CITW that the gods used to be appeased by a simple volcano sacrifice, but had gotten more and more desensitized and gluttonous and needed more entertaining ways to cull the herd. You guys need to watch the movie again, pay some better attention.

Yep. I had to skip ahead lol. I love RLM but they don't seem to get sarcasm or irony well. It's like they imagine no one could ever be as clever or self aware as them. Kind of pretentious.

I'm pretty sure when the original three stooges where on the air there was controversy because kids were poking each other's eyes out so the disclaimer was necessary. The real question is why the one guy decided to wear his sexy open shirt in the segment specifically for kids

I love cabin in the woods but I think the biggest detramint to the film was the fact that it was advertised as a horror movie, it's a comedy for horror movie fans.

Weren't the rituals the point? We see it as horror movie tropes, but in universe, they see it as nightmare fodder (which may or may not come from the Old Gods). Jenkins and Acker explain this in the movie.

I haven't revisited this Half in the Bag in quite a while, but I'm surprised Mike and Jay didn't pick up on the fact that Cabin in the Woods is like 80% comedy and 20% horror (they seemed to think it leaned more into the horror than the comedy). No need to over-analyze the horror elements, like WHY the gods want specific types of entertainment that involve horror tropes. It's basically as if to explain why these events, like Camp Crystal Lake, happen in REAL LIFE, within that universe. The whole thing was just making fun of the fact that there are these tropes in so many slashers, and the scene where the office workers are taking bets, with that massive dry erase board, is one of the funniest things I've seen in a comedy horror, as well as the speaker phone call with Mordecai. Maybe they'd get it more now, 11 years later, now that they're more beaten down and cynical. To me, Cabin in the Woods is a comedy horror on the level of Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Seems like they didn't get very dry pitch black comedy as much, back then.

Guys. the "Old Gods" are us(Or rather people), watching a horror movie, as we watch a movie about "Old Gods". I don't know how else to explain it. It goes pretty deep though if you really think about it, mostly about the disdain the industry feels for such traditional setups. They make horror movies like this because they make money, to "appease" the consumer/old gods
@TheWSGman9 жыл бұрын
Yeah pretty much. the Japanese girls in the Japan videos and all that are them trying to appease to different cultures sensibilities appropriate to real horror subgenre that do exist. That's how I read it. It's great because the crux of the metaphor is in the premise so we can just have fun with the craziness of it all and not be beaten over the head with it, even watch it as just shlock like these guys , and its still super engaging. Man I'm going to watch this again

+AuthorityCat Exactly ^^ the gods are the audience. They wanna see the boobs in the sex scene. The whore always dies, One or nobody can survive but it has to be the good girl (the virgin). Audiences dont wanna see the dickhead jock bully type survive. They dont want them to be sensible and not split up cus thats no fun etc etc etc. Just feed us the same cliches and appease us lol. Thats what i took from the gods part anyways. And why every country had its own way of expressing it.

Do the makers of horror movies have nightmares about their characters turning on them and killing them then? While they protest that they only treat those characters so horribly because the audience demands it?

I think the reason for the other contries sacrifices is because they learned that they can make money from the sacrifices so in trying to make money the tested it with those other contries using their genres of horror
@gamereview2114 жыл бұрын
I am kinda surprised they didn’t pick up on the fact that the gods were meant to represent horror movie audiences and the type of movies they continue to go see, hence why each country’s ritual is different since their cultural tropes vary (school girls in japan for example)
