I remember reading a horror comic years ago that had a story very much like Zaat (not sure if one was based off the other). Scientist decides the planet is going to be flooded sometime in the future so comes up with a plan to make fish-people. Injects himself full of the stuff, it combines a lot of different fish but one of the key samples comes from salmon (the comic states it's the only fish that can live in fresh and seawater). As he's in his tub transforming the temperature changes, when he emerges he gets an urge to go into the water and he ends up spawning before dying. Epilogue explains that some fish change gender depending on the weather, so apparently this guy changed to a female and gave birth to a lot of little fish people. Was a weird story, and probably wasn't more than five or six pages long in the comic, but some of the images of Zaat are very reminiscent.
