I still think that Michael Fassbender was a fantastic young Magneto. I'm kinda bummed that they're not gonna do a movie based on the Magneto comic arc, which is focused around the guy you'd expect in his twilight years. The X-Men were created in a time of social change and the 1960s battle for civil rights. The two opposing mutant leaders; Charles Xavier and Max Eisenhart (AKA Erik Lehensherr) are comic book representations of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X. The X-Men fly in a plane called "Blackbird", likely a reference to The Beatles song, a song ostensibly about people of colour finding their justice and place in the world. The social commentary is thoroughly embedded in the X-Men mythology and that's why it is always worth talking about.

@@Struktualnyj No it's been known since the 80s, where have you been?
@iy424 жыл бұрын
@@Rebelphoenix But X-Men isn't a product of the 80s. It's probably more accurate to say that X-Men, in general, gestures towards the marginalization of the other, but who that other happens to be is not as much intrinsic to the franchise itself as it is motivated by the current events of the time. X-Men originally read as a civil rights analogy and then two decades later pivoted to gay rights when that became more topical. It feels like Mike and Jay's point here is that (besides the fact that X-Men movies and other Hollywood films tend to fuck up social commentary and should probably keep things a bit open to interpretation for their own good) using language directly associated with specific real-world movements that happen to be topical at release might earn a few points at the time but it waters down the message quite a bit. "Humanity has always irrationally feared and hated the Other" feels like a big idea you could weave a film franchise around and makes "mutants are like gay people" feel much smaller in scope by comparison.

I've gotta disagree with the idea of what the X-men should be. While yes, for the most part the X-men should be fun, whacky stories, there's more to it than that. All the fun and whackiness is back drop for what they're really about. To me that's relatability. The X-men to me is one of the most relatetable comic books you can read. It's about family, relationships, and most importantly it's about the characters. It's not all supposed to be about equality and rights, but that is definitely a big part of it, and has been since it's creation. It's a criticism of humanity to be honest, and how silly it is to disregard people who contribute for simply being different. And yes, you can apply anything to fit the narrative, it doesn't have to be JUST homosexuality, it's more broad. All of this doesn't have to hit you in the face with it, it needs to be subtle and flow through with the story/characters. And that's what makes the X-men so great, because it accomplishes more and has more dimension than most comic book superheroes.
@amberbaum40797 жыл бұрын
