it's crazy how much of half life 2 is designed to show off (no longer) new tech
@eggboy91263 күн бұрын
At the time many of the big releases did this. The original Doom for example, E1M1’s first room is designed to show off the engine and what it can do. Staying on Doom, Doom 3 is a huge show off for lighting and texture tech, the likes of which had never been seen before.

To be honest we hardly see physics even used. Its just visuals that are the focus, sound and especially physics fell by the wayside and are patheticly basic in 99% of games save indie games like Teardown.

it makes me angry how almost no modern games use planar reflection for water, it's usually just crappy SSR or graphically intensive raytracing now

@fordealisbad85693 күн бұрын

@@halfsine Planar reflections are entirely impractical and ludicrously expensive to render, good SSR combined with cubemaps does the job well enough. RT water is one of the few uses of RT that actually works well in its current form.
@xzraiderzx3083 күн бұрын
@@halfsineplanar reflections generally aren’t useful for modern games. It’s about as expensive as modern techniques, but gives less detail and worse material response, only being really viable on smooth, mirror-like surfaces. They’re only used nowadays for mirrors like in Hitman or various racing games.

It's crazy how nice the water looks, yet modern games still often fall back on the TERRIBLE effect of screen-space reflections. Like why are we not using this kind of water shader more commonly? Since not only does it look better, but is also performant enough to be ran as long ago as 2004. If my knowledge is correct, screen-space reflections are actually more expensive to render as well, despite them looking much worse.

I honestly don't understand why modern games can't JUST RENDER WATER LIKE HALF LIFE. No RTX. Just render it again. What's the big fuckin deal about RTX Reflections?
@2kliksphilip3 күн бұрын
I think as games have got more complex it gets harder just to render everything 'twice', plus Source is limited to just one of these reflections at once whereas pathtracing can have unlimited. And it isn't just the water reflection, it's every reflection on-screen AND the general lighting as well that can be pathtraced.
