The thing about Source Engine is that it could do baked Global Illumination really well, so the lighting of these maps was already generally pretty convincing.

@@colbyboucher6391 which is also why models that represented lightsources generally didn't have any physics properties, since that would shatter the illusion. The only thing that generally lacked in the source engine was the resolution of the baked lightmaps, but while just focusing on the gameplay that generally goes unnoticed. Source 2 made major strides in that regard but over on that side, if you try to bake lightmaps using your cpu this process took hours to days for the final quality bake, which is why for the cs2 tools they disabled that functionality through the GUI (still accessible through the commandline) and now you need a raytracing capable GPU to bake lightmaps.

The crossbow bolt must be glowing red hot, illuminating the room brighter than gravigun, that's the point of the "bzzzt" sound on reload. The grenade red dot is still just a particle effect, not a glow source. The revolver smoke is too obnoxious.

I notice that when I twist some hole or what ever in AK style rifle, grey smoke came through and I blew air from my mouth to it like in the western movies they blow that colt revolver smoke. so nothing has changed. I always wonder if the machine pistol in HL2 is Swedish or Israeli design. It's kind of funny that aliens in Half Life universe use human technology still so much. Maybe they don't trust Dr. Breen to give him too much technology. The so called AR 3 rifle is alien technology but mixed with human technology

That gun smoke is unrealistic and annoying. Especially the cringey smoke rings on the revolver.This isn't 1800s and those are not flintlocks. Modern guns and ammo don't make so much smoke if at all.

Very cool however not the groundbreaking visuals I was expecting... Honestly I don't know what I was expecting but this looks decent. I'm really curious how the game looks in more well lit areas like the train station or City 17 center. Hope this gets a release sooner rather than later.

1:38 No, it doesn't. there's a point light source in the distance, the shadow should be equally defined and sharp. The effect you describe happens when the light source has a bigger diffusing area than a single point light. I don't understand why they made such a mistake like that.

It has to be because basically everything is path traced on this engine. It may just be that they faked the effect so well in the original that it looks pretty much on par with the real thing.

17:32 you need to work on blood effects. It needs to be dark crimson with purpulish tint and have complex normals for interesting specular highlihgts. Yes I understand that the lighting conditions were special in this case, blood effects still need work.

The glow on neon fixture stays still while the lamp oscillates 😅 and i can tell why. It is a different entity placed in the map editor (that i used for fun) and not related or grouped with the neon model. Dunno if they can fix it without the uncompiled file and recompile it. Probably not, maybe they could kill the glow sprite and replace it attached to light source?

Half Life 2's atmosphere is unmatched, and it would take a ton of skill to take that atmosphere into this style. They did pretty good but it really is missing a certain raw quality, everything looks very soft in this and not really quite there.

I was playing through this part of the game earlier, can't notice anything different except more detailed shadows that fade out after a few feet/meter into ugly blurry shadows. if there was more it might be interesting but when you're in the middle of a fight or figuring out where to go, shadows are the least interesting thing, they could be turned off.. i feel like most of the emersion comes from the textures, level design, sound and music. shadows and im guessing better reflections? come last.

I'll admit, seeing real-time global illumination for static geometry greatly hurt the optimization part of my brain (i'm a gamedev) Source 2 bakes it all ahead of time, making something of similar quality while being like 50 times faster to render Still, seeing real-time shadow penumbras was cool, it's a neat novelty, and i agree that for Nvidia this is just them trying to sell more GPUs.

Yeah, while it's a neat novelty, using real-time global illumination for static geometry is REALLY overkill. Source 2 gives similar results while baking static lighting && global illumination, making it much much cheaper to render This is mainly just Nvidia trying to market their cards

I'm sorry but there is NO WAY that 0:11 - 0:14 is just a matter of RTX being off and then on. That is a whole asset rebuild with textures and geometry etc. RTX is for lighting, shadows and reflections.......no way just switching RTX = on rebuilds entire assets of a game. It isn't magic and this is horse crap.

This is certainly a good start, I hope they add more detritus and stuff like they did in Alyx, made it feels so much more lived in. (Small rant incoming) Personally, and this is just a me thing, I love it if they revamped the weapons to be more in line with the weapons they had in Alyx. Like certain weapons like the spaz12, the crossbow and the revolver have always felt out of place me and we're only put in because they were in Half Life 1 where they made sense. Like I wish the civil Protection used a sort of Combine Blaster side arm that secondary fire would be the equivalent to a magnum shot, then you swap out the smg with the Combine SMG from Alyx. The spaz 12 was not a widely adopted shotgun, especially so in northern Europe so there's no reason it should be anywhere. I really like the Alyx shotty and would love a full size Rifle version. Instead of a Crossbow it would've been better if the resistance made some mocked up Tau cannons that fired rebar, I reckon that would have made more sense as to why the rebar would become superheated. With the combine smg being the Dark energy Repeater that would have its own version of a grenade launcher, there wouldn't be much use for the pulse rifle so turn that into some kinda of Gatling gun equivalent, or a modified Gluon gun that uses dark energy. It would've made alot more sense to me if the resistance had to manufacture their own weapons because as it states in Alyx, the combine security lock their weapons so making weapons that use combine energy resources and ammunition would be perfect.

These are interesting ideas but I don't agree with them in the slightest. I do agree that it's weird that the combine have normal ass human guns as their assigned weapon but it makes sense because the lower ranks have the pistol, smg and shotgun, and only the high ranks have the combine made pulse rifle. because the combine forces are human the closer to the combine they are the more they are trusted with combine technology. I also like the smg and the shotgun as they are, I like that the smg is different from the pulse rifle so it's easy to tell them apart and they have their own identities. Also I don't have an excuse for why the combine is using mass produced shotguns not made near where the game is set but the spas is an awesome looking shotgun and it doesn't really matter at all so I personally like the shotgun. I also really like the pulse rifle, it has great balancing with the way lower ammo count than the smg and imo since it's the design is alien it feels equally like a assault rifle and a sort of large gatling gun. I also like the pistol and revolver on their own as separate guns, even if that means you won't use the pistol that much late game. But I do really like your ideas even though I personally wouldn't replace the originals with them, and I do think they would be really cool guns that would be fun to use in game. Also ignore any toxic comments if you get any.
