The Female Assassins only appear at the end of apprehension where the H.E.C.U. Marines set up a trap to capture you and also take all of your weaponry. They also appear in Lambda Complex in the second section of the chapter in the game. In Opposing Force they appear in Friendly Fire where you meet 2 H.E.C.U. Marines having an conversation about the Black Ops and what the hell they doing here. And the Male Variant of the Black Ops is also introduced by Gearbox in Opposing Force in Friendly Fire, where you first encounter them and they're also entirely mute like the Female Black Ops not like the H.E.C.U. Marines who are talking very much during combat against Gordon in the Original Half-Life, what makes them more a little bit difficult to kill them. They also appear in the last chapter worlds collide in the first section in the Black Mesa Warehouse. Also If you play Half-Life or Opposing Force on the Hardest Difficulty Setting the Female Assassins are much tougher and also use an cloaking device which makes them more harder to kill.

The original Thief came out that year bro. It had a very in-depth system that told the ai how loud certain sounds were, and they had three ways of reacting to sound. Inquisitive remark "what was that?" Beginning a search for the noise source, and rushing straight toward the noise at full speed while giving a hue and cry.

that's not actually so difficult to do since the ai can calculate a path to the player, it can do the same for a noise to check if an enemy, or agent, heard it and then use that path to navigate to there.And if there is no clear path between the noise and the agent then there probably is some kind of obstruction like a wall and the enemy probably wouldn't hear the noise

Enemy AIs, especially the Bullsquid had "smell tracking" as well. They could follow your trail for a short distance directly to you. (The game probably did this by keeping track of the last dozen or so pathnodes you passed through and handing that trail off to the Bullsquid.)

I don't know, I like the kicks better. First of all, girls actually can kick. Ain't a real woman going to leap 20 feet into the air, doesn't matter how tight her catsuit is. Second, she's not going to throw a punch, her hands are full of pistol. Third, I'd give the kick some knock back on Gordon, so that if you did manage to corner an assassin, she would kick you out of the way and run to a position where she could shoot some more.

This makes me wonder why don't stealth based games use more this kind of design in enemies. They ussually make us follow an unaware enemy and wait the right moment ti kill it. The assasins in half life, in other hand, are brilliant, since they can use stealth against you in a large map with lots of hiding spots. It's like playing hide and seek but balanced both for the player and the AI.

It doesn’t have to be every enemy that tries to sneak up on you. Just have most enemies be the usual guards that you sneak up on, and elite late game enemies that try to do the same to you. Maybe they only show up when you’ve been spotted and the alarm is raised, so they send in some counter espionage to stop you. Until then, since they have no idea you’re even there, there’s (probably) no reason there would be enemies already hunting for you (unless they are a third party or you’re trying to escape them or something)

I have a feeling the reason why the Assassins have “search patterns” is because they’re more freelance agents, like the other black ops, they had a goal to do what the marines couldn’t finish, kill all witnesses. If an explosion happened somewhere there’s a chance someone could be the cause of it. Unlike the HECU and other black ops ground infantry from OPFOR, the assassins don’t have places they need to defend or hold perimeters at, and since they’re in an alien infested facility, wandering off without other marines or black ops, it’s a death sentence. Plus the operation was a technical failure, so why would the marines specifically want to check out something if there’s no specific orders to do so, they’re cut off from command.

A very long time ago I headed up a project called Dark Truths where we blended the AI from the Assassins into the normal Marines when we found that the code was far more responsive. We then took that a little further and caused the Marines to intentionally keep their distance from all mobs. Without the Assassin code a small group of headcrab zombies or a single Bullsquid would decimate a trio of Marines but with the code blended in the melee only mobs became fodder as the Marines would keep backing up as the mobs approached. We later intended to adapt this behavior to when the player was holding certain weapons if I recall but only added the code for them to keep their distance from a player holding a shotgun before the project fell apart.

I miss the days when I was a kid that didn't know much about computers and didn't even know programming existed. Everything seemed possible and wonderful. I never knew what was around the next corner in a game because I didn't understand the limitations and I didn't have enough life experience to know what to expect. It was so much more engaging and mysterious. I also paid more attention to detail. Nowdays you usually just blast through the game and you tryhard to be the best you can instead of having fun and soaking in the game world.
