Pat's mentality reflects that of a lot people in the world. Most of us purchase products from factories we know violate basic human rights, showing no concern for how these products are made as long as they are inexpensive and accessible. Many individuals would likely proceed with the severance procedure because it offers significant benefits to them, even if it comes at the expense of another version of themselves, specially if the two parts never meet.

The important thing to remember (as pertains to that conversation at the end about outies and innies) is that the person you are up until the procedure, the one with memories of childhood, the one who picked the procedure in the first place, is the outy. Will continue to exist as the outy. So if any of you got the procedure done tomorrow you would automatically be the outy. The inny is born on that table in the conference room in episode one. Who they are starts there, with no memories of life before, and they start building their personal memories and experiences at that moment. Imagine your inny as a clone of yourself you made and then enslaved. You locked them in an office 24 / 7 and then collected their paychecks and go shopping. That’s basically what it is with a shared body. That is why those kids were protesting. In defense of the poor inny you made to do the hard stuff for you. This is the clone argument and the AI argument. BUT because you share a body and a brain you don’t feel as bad. You argue that it’s you, your body and your brain, doing the work so it’s not morally wrong.

From Lumen's perspective think about what Severance means for salary negotiations. The innie has no incentive to ask for a raise (they don't get to spend any money after all - they'd prefer waffle parties and silly trinkets) and from the outie's perspective they arent really doing anything besides losing a chunk of their day. I'm sure they are well compensated for taking the procedure in the first place, but its hard to argue you deserve more when you have no idea what you're actually doing.
@Pixlriffs15 күн бұрын
Mark gets a promotion in episode 1 and they hand him an identical keycard. Mark on the outside has no way of knowing his role has changed. Obviously the work is ambiguous anyway, but yeah you better believe Lumon didn’t give his outie a raise 😂
@IceMetalPunk15 күн бұрын
Innies are literally the dream employees of soulless corporations: they have no reason to ask for raises, they can't tell anyone what they do, they can't report abuse or exploitation, they can't be distracted by their personal lives because they literally don't know anything except work, and they can't leave even if they want to because their outies force them back every day. *And* with the code detectors, it's typically impossible for an innie to convince their outie to quit -- but even if they did, that would be death for them anyway, so they're strongly dissuaded from even doing that. Basically, they created a worker for whom subjugation is literally everything about them, and without subjugation they're literally dead.
@nickwittednonpareil15 күн бұрын
@Pixlriffs That's a great point! We do see a promotion with Mark's outie being none the wiser.

This is really a reframing of the ethical question, "In a free society, can you sell yourself into slavery?" Most people say that the answer is no... because consent isn't a singular thing - it can be withdrawn at any time, and a slave can't unconsent to being a slave.

They will show what actually happens when you go out a few times during this season so he'll understand it better

I knew Rana will recognize Daisy mom😆. I think filming S2 of this show kept Turturro from appearing in The Penguin.

That lady has a different name outside, she’s not severed. Remember they have the same name in and out, they see a video of their outie telling them he/she chose to get served and work at Lumon.

Hey Normies-- when I first watched this I thought a lot about it like this: have you guys seen Black Mirror? These innies are essentially a Cookie, as referenced in multiple Black Mirror episodes (except also living in the same body ala The Substance) They may want to not exist like this anymore/quit- and that should be their absolute right- but each innie has effectively become a separate person. This existence is all they will ever know- would you rather effectively “die”/wink out of existence? Perhaps. But they are now a separate person from their outie. And this is the only way they can live.

The best way to think of being an “inne” is you work for 8 hours step into a closet your clothes change & you step out to work another 8 hours forever

Do we know for sure this isn’t Pat’s innie? Maybe that’s why he’s so confused

1:11 Pat’s reaction at you guys Severing yourselves sent me screaming 😂😂

Pat on human rights is insane. He's either the slowest dude ever or the greatest troll alive. Love that guy

Of course Pat would be in favor of severance... that tracks. "You're a person now. Do you want to die?" "Yeah, because I hate it!" Well, funny thing about that, Navi...

I'm here, binging your Severance Reactions (pretty great, enjoying them very much)... But, Pat, HOLLY SHIT, OMG

Pat would definitely be a full time innie

I am NOT trying to be mean but I think Pat needs his brain scanned. After all of his commentary over the years I am legit worried about him. I think there's something wrong. Again, NOT trying to be mean to Pat.

Pat is trying way too hard to be a contrarian. To the point where he is just being nonsensical. Such a waste of everyone's time...
@IceMetalPunk15 күн бұрын
I think that's giving him too much credit. That implies he doesn't believe the things he's saying...
@reddevilmoe329515 күн бұрын
@@IceMetalPunk believe the things he is saying? lol he doesn't even understand the things he is saying. He just knows it's a controversial take.

This is such an intuitive group. I know this is killing Suraj (is that how you spell his name?? Apologies if not!!) He’s doing a GREAT job as a second time watcher. I can also, as a second time watcher, see when certain things he didn’t catch or pay much attention to may hit him differently. ALSO LOL- FROM THE START ABOUT WATCHING LOST AGAIN!!!!! Yup. Yup. What a mood.

Edit- I was live reacting but I love how the cookie Black Mirror thing was mentioned to try to explain it to the one dude, after the episode LOL

I'd like to chime in on the ongoing debate about whether the innie should be cared about, or if the innie is a real person. Thought experiment: Split all the Normies into two groups. Everyone on the couch in this vid plus everyone that's been on in the past six months. Good group of folks, good people. Group one (Outie group) retains all memory. Group two (Innies) people are stripped of all personal memories and experiences. For the next ten years, the Outie Normies are allowed to do whatever they want to their Innie Normie friends, like enslave or sell to other Outies or whatever, because they are "not real." After ten years they will be re-integrated and have no memory of your treatment of them. --Do you as an Outie Normie treat them kindly during that time (because they are your friends who are vulnerable) or enslave them (because they are "not real")? (Note that you will not suffer any consequences after the ten-year experiment)
