Fir 20 years I’ve been in sales and had the opportunity to die. While traveling and host clients at restaurants. Restaurants suck! Dining out has always been a big waste of money and almost always a disappointing and annoying experience. But restaurant quality, portions, prices are worse than ever. Panera Bread is one of the worst. Chili’s and Applebee’s and Fridays all suck. Higher end restaurants are awful as well. Chic Fil A has even started playing games with portions and prices. Save your self some money and skip dining out. You won’t miss it. Restaurants are loud, dirty, annoying, expensive.

When the crash hit in the fall of 08, I was a carpenter foreman for a custom home builder. I remember thinking, "Oh boy, here we go again," but we kept going strong until the summer of 2010....only then did we have a lay off. I think folks have to remember that the Great depression didn't kick off with disaster for everyone in '29. The economy just didn't stop on a dime for the whole country when the market crashed. Both my grandfathers told me they were pretty much steadily employed until 1931. My one grandfather was a home builder here in Chicago, the other one worked for Ford motor Co. in Detroit. My dad, born 1916, dropped out of high school in '32 to, as he put it, "Help put food on the table." Growing up, I heard the Great depression stories so many times, I felt as though I actually went through it myself. My point in saying this is: I believe we're in 1930 right now. My operation fuel cost has gone up 15% in the last two weeks! I can't understand why people aren't talking about the impact on this industry (trucking), and it's effects coming on our country! It's becoming impossible for independents to operate out here, insurance cost, fuel, and higher maintenance cost with aging trucks! I've talked to drivers that are considering getting out completely! Can you imagine the impact on our supply chain if 10% of drivers drop out? It's a bad situation unfolding out here for us!

My twin brother jumped in front of the San Diego trolley and ended his life in 1997 after being homeless for a year. San Diego is a horrible place to be homeless because you are surrounded with some of the wealthiest properties in the world. Now many more are homeless there. California, Oregon and Washington all had longer shutdowns for restaurants, massage therapists, other industries with one on one contact. Ohio, where I live, only had strict lockdowns for 6-8 weeks. If people aren't working the state won't be collecting tax revenues.

I view this back to work close the stimulus move by government very suspiciously. Let's not debate the idea that people should not have had stimulus and should be responsible for themselves. That is a totally different issue. For a full year, 20 million people were not safe and had to be put in lockdown. Then a jobs report comes out that is 75% less than expectations and suddenly those same 20 million people are now safe to go back to work. In one day the pandemic is over. Pandemics, real pandemics, do not end in 24 hours. John Steinbeck wrote a book called The Grapes of Wrath which was about people who had nothing during the Depression who were conned into going to California to pick fruit. Employers would get their agents to go all over the country and distribute flyers advertising these great wages for fruit picking and when people showed up by the tens of thousands in Califonia it turned out that the wages were only 5% of what the flyers promised. Fast forward to today! All of a sudden 20 million workers who were formally in lockdown are now magically safe from the pandemic and flooding the markets. This happened overnight. We are told that the bulk of the new hiring is in restaurants, hotels, fast food etc. These are the very sectors that are at risk of substantially contracting. 6 months from now can we expect an oversupply of workers? And can their wages be cut because there are just too many of them? This is a mess that is unfixable for decades to come. And, BIG AND, did you see the new job numbers? Yes! ADP says the economy added 978,000 jobs BUT it also lost 1.5 million jobs as well. So the economy lost 500,000 jobs net. There has been ZERO improvements. This strikes me as a modern-day Grapes of Wrath!

I’m in the Washington DC area. Luckily my Beauty Salon is bouncing back after being closed 2 months and then slow. Clients are getting vaccinated and are feeling better about coming back. Also had 15 new clients in May . My landlord didn’t charge me rent when I was shut down for 2 months - then he discounted my rent for a while. I’ve heard stories about how some commercial landlords raised rent ! It’s not that simple - many variables. Some countries handled the pandemic the right way and have O cases.
