For wiring work, especially underhood, crosslink polyethylene wire is fantastic, a lot more heat resistant than PVC primary wire. Type SXL, GXL, TXL, is heavy, standard, and thin jacket wire. It also handles a bit nicer in terms of doing harness work laying where you put it and not having a 'set' to it like PVC thats always trying to roll back up. Its what is used in cars in some locations by the big manufacturers. I buy my wire from delcity.net because it seems a lot less sketchy than just whatever random rolls of GXL off of ebay/amazon. The price isnt horrible either, $16 for a 100 foot 16 awg roll, so not ridiculously more expensive like it would be if you went silly and used teflon wire.
@rjk7104
@rjk7104 4 жыл бұрын
Del City is awesome, but holy shit they are expensive. I think TXL wire is best, because it has the same temp rating as the other ones, but is much thinner insulation thickness and weight, while still being very abrasion resistant.
@danw1955
@danw1955 4 жыл бұрын
Teflon coated would be the ultimate, but hellish expensive unless you have a couple spare military generators laying around to rob some from.😁
@CKOD
@CKOD 4 жыл бұрын
Dan W Teflon would have a chance at standing up to a rogue waste gate for a short duration too if that gets messed up again. 😂The price is a hard sell unless you're an F1 team and shaving grams by using really thin wall stuff though.
@danw1955
@danw1955 4 жыл бұрын
@@CKOD No doubt! That's why I mentioned the possibility of pulling some from old wrecked military equipment. I stumbled onto a 500 foot roll of 6 conductor 16ga. teflon cable (with shielding) about 10 years ago, and I made some of the best trailer wiring harnesses with that stuff for several years afterward! It would have been ideal for what Rob's doing right now with the coil wiring, etc.😉

Next time you need to tap something sensitive to debris ingress, cover your tap in some grease and after every turn or two pull it out and remove/recover in grease. The grease will catch and hold almost all the shavings. Learned that from an old ford tech that had drilled out and tapped his fair share of triton spark plugs.

Hey Rob. For future “controversial” tapping... if you use a TON of bearing grease on the tool while your tapping the metal files will be caught in the grease and not drop into your water jackets, block, etc. I’ve found that a small amount of bearing grease in a system is better than metal shavings. Keep up the progress, love what you do!

TIP: if you're tapping a hole that's inside a line, like you are, you can do one of two things. 1. depending on how that hole is formed, you can drop a paper plug. You can either straight up drop a napkin ball, or pass a small line with a loop inside that napkin, you can either hook it up by that loop, or just use one of those picks with a spiral to pick the plug and filings out. 2. put the part upside down and tap it like that. Any fillings/chips will fall out once you remove the tap. Bonus tip, you should get a T handle tap wrench. Those give you extra reach, and are the preferred tool for the hole you tapped there.

Try using Velcro strap tape (double sided) when building a wire harness. I prefer them when I need to hold everything together. Much easier to make adjustments for junctions and adding new cables to your loom; easily reusable. You can find 1/2" and 3/4" rolls for around $10 and there will be enough to hold together an entire chassis harness during dry-fit.

With tapping NPT threads, I do not cut the threads all in one go. I stop partway to double check that the taper of the NPT threads that the tap cut is deep enough and not too for the fitting I want to thread in. The hole that Rob tapped at 11:45 is has its threads/taper slightly too deep. It's not a huge deal for a plug, but a fitting that has a knuckle or flange for a wrench could make contact with the area around the hole before the taper of the female NPT threads are in full contact with the male NPT threads of fitting. Also, when tapping holes with a straight flute hand tap, I turn the handle a half turn forward (clockwise) then I turn a quarter turn back (counter-clockwise). This breaks the chips off into the flutes of the tap and prevents the tap from binding up and possibly breaking (which sucks because taps are made out of the same high speed steel as drill bits so you can't drill them out unless you have a carbide drill bit).

Hey Rob, not sure if you heard me complaining about the amount of ads, but you took them off, something so simple made watching your progress a lot more enjoyable. But just some food for thought on the coils, I know your aiming for aluminum, but how about using something conductive (steel or even a plate of copper would look nice) for that plate so you can eliminate the ground wires for the coils. Just ground each coil to the plate, then one main ground off said plate.

My grandmother had an island. Nothing to boast of. You could walk along within an hour. But still, it was a paradise for us. One summer, we went for a visit and discovered the place had been infested with rats. They'd come on a fishing boat and gorged themselves on coconut. So, how do you get rid of rats on an island? My grandmother showed me. We buried a whole drum and changed the lid. Then wired the coconut to the lead as bait and the rats would come for the coconut and they would fall into the drum. And after a month you've trapped all the rats. But what did you do then? Throw the drum into the ocean? Burn it? No, you just leave it, and they begin to get hungry. And one by one they start eating each other until there are only two left, the two survivors. And then what, do you kill them? No. You take them and release them into the trees. And now they don't eat coconut anymore. Now they only eat rat.

9:09 I probably would have used the bolts holding the units onto the mounting plate to give each one their own individual grounding point. It'd be harder to inspect the grounding points, but with them directly mounted, there shouldn't be any wire movement, so it'd be highly unlikely they'd break loose from wire fatigue. or any other reason, really. It'd be awesome if the bolt holes had a built in grounding connection so you didn't need a grounding wire at all... but I guess some people might mount the units to non-conductive surfaces (like a fiberglass mounting plate for weight reduction), which would mean there'd need to be a normal grounding wire connection anyways... so the manufacturer might as well save some money and _not_ include that feature.
