When I lived in Chad, I once met a guy who was running his own single-aircraft "airline", doing internal flights in the country with a small airplane (It was long ago, I forgot the model, or the guy's name. Details are real fuzzy). Financially, it didn't work great, his customer base was too small. So he struck a deal with some South-African people: they would fly the aircraft from N'Djamena to South Africa, rent it for a few days to operate internal flights in South Africa, and the aircraft would then return to Chad for a few more days, etc... They agreed on the details of the deal, flew the aircraft to South Africa... and paid local authorities to provide them with documents saying it was theirs. They then kept it as theirs to fly internal flights in South Africa. So the original owner simply went there, to one of the airfields where they were operating. And once the aircraft in question was there, simply walked into the hangar, got on board, taxied, took off, and landed it back in Chad!

Looking online it seems the plane was actually found. Whoever took it bribed some 3rd world official to give the plane a new registration but a few letters of the old reg was still visable. The owner most likely hired someone to fly the plane out to avoid paying the storage fees it had racked up while abandoned at the airport. Then did a dodgy deal to re-register it in a different country.
@mallardtheduck1
@mallardtheduck1 2 жыл бұрын
All I can find is that apparently a burned-out 727 bearing a false registration was found in Mali in 2009. While some reports link it to this incident, there seems to have been no official confirmation that it's the same plane. I kinda suspect that if it were the same plane, it would have been confirmed by now.

My theory: It landed it a small airfield and was scrapped, or crashed into the Namib Desert or maybe the Congo Forest
@thequantaleaper
@thequantaleaper 5 жыл бұрын
The reason they pretty much write off landing is that a 737 requires a minimum runway distance that is longer than most airfields. And that's assuming a skilled set of pilots and top-shape plane. The track must be relatively smooth and flat as it doesn't take much to cause the plane to veer off and any smooth long strip of road long and wide enough to accommodate would have had witnesses. So either this was well planned and a landing facility and crew was secured beforehand, or it crashed.

They would need a large paved runway,with access to heavy machinery that can effectively scrap the plane. I do not think think such a facility even exists in Africa. Let alone within 1500 miles of Angola. It will not be the first time some moron in Africa hijacked a plane and and asked them to go to a country without any idea about how fuel works.
@SebastianHaban
@SebastianHaban 5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't even have to be an airfield. Could also be a long enough street. Here in germany many interstate highways /Autobahnen have parts exactly designed for starting or landing planes in case of a war (so german airforce can still operate even if all known airports get destroyed) with parking lots in place for refuleing.

The aircraft was registered N844AA, and it was parked at Luanda alongside N843AA, another ex-American Airlines 727. That latter aircraft went on to fly with Nigeria's IRS Airlines (re-registered in Nigeria), carrying diesel, and was later stored along with 5N-RIR, another aircraft that once belonged to the same company.

Video suggestion: in my architectural history class we were told the legend that when the Empire State and Chrysler buildings were competing for tallest building in the world, one of them pretended to stall production so they other one would finish, and then put an extra bit on top that wasn't in the initially submitted plans! I've never looked it up because I don't want to find out this amusing legend is not true, but maybe you could do something about little tricks like that in the race to be the tallest building during the 1850-1950 skyscraper golden age? Great video, enjoyed it!

5:07 plane crash is in Mukilteo, WA on highway 525. Pilot had just taken off from Paine Field, which is just south Boeing's largest factory. The plane engine stalled and luckily he was able to slide through that intersection and down a road. A few cars were caught on fire and totaled but miraculously no one died including the pilot. Edit: You can confirm by taking the longitude and latitude in the corner.

Daniel V While Newark Liberty is certainly in the core of the NYC metro area, Newark and Elizabeth (the co-owner cities of Newark Liberty) are separate cities in a separate state entirely. The other two major airport hubs _are_ in NYC- JFK, which is of comparable scale to Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia, which is quite a bit smaller than the other two, but still decently sized as far as airports go. All three are operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and there’s a number of reasons why they suck to varying degrees- although Newark is definitely the worst lol. Mind you, it’s almost half the size of JFK but handles more flights. Also, age and limited space to construct new facilities without disrupting operations at one of the busiest air travel markets in the world is a big factor in why the airports are subpar by today’s standards. These are amongst some of the oldest airports in the world, in one of the most densely populated regions in the world and are certainly past their primes. All of this makes improving them very difficult. The other major issue is corruption and the lack of a political will to update this country’s aging infrastructure. But that problem is hardly unique to this part of the US, but rather the rule countrywide. JFK is getting some much needed improvements though. Tl:dr Yeah, the air travel infrastructure in and around NYC kinda sucks by today’s standards, but the airports are old and built to the needs of their times. Age, lack of space to expand and volume of traffic make improvements hard to carry out without shutting stuff down in a busy market. Political incompetence is also a big issue, but that’s a problem nearly everywhere in the US, at all levels of government.

So let’s be honest the plane landed at a small remote air port within a rebel held area inside the sphere. It was then mostlikely scrapped for parts and metal, and everything to identify it was destroyed.

It probably landed somewhere near, be it an airport or a wide road. It was then transported inside an hangar and completely disassembled. Parts were later sold, and what couldn't be sold, was melted and used to build other metal parts and appliances.

Most important thing I've learnt about plane crashes is that 80% of plane fatalities come from the fires after landing. If you are ever in a plane crash, get out of there asap. You have under 2 minutes before the fire.

I suspect it was out there for a while, and those looking for it probably have seen it, they just didn't know what they were looking at. I have heard about ships getting hijacked and have their identities changed to allow them to operate in plain sight. Someone had a messed up 727, stole this one and then operated it under the registry their original plane had. For further details watch the Movie "Gone in 60 seconds" (the original NOT the remake) .

When my father was 11 years old he was flying back from a trip with his grandfather, when the plane crashed upon landing. The landing gear swept out from underneath the plane, and it slid into the grass beside the runway. Luckily no one was hurt. The plane was a Boeing 727. The people who inspected the crash suspect the pilot landed too hard, and the landing gear gave way.
