For years afterwards, people would say "don't do a Harold Holt', which meant not to go missing. So especially in the years before cellphones, if you were at say a shopping mall and your friend wanted to go one way and you wanted to go another for a minute, you might say 'don't do a Harold Holt'. Argon In Australia, the way government works is the leader of the political party that wins becomes prime minster. e.g If Scott Morrison was the leader of the liberal party and said party won the election, Scott Morrison becomes leader. If the liberal party decided to change their leader, they would become prime minster. This has happened so often it’s practically become a meme in Australia.

So. Im a salvage diver. I get bodys out of thewater and do other things. I vividly remeber this one case. It was a river, a guy fell in, couldn't swim, his friend jumped after him to help, and couldn't swim either. The first guy was quickly pulled out by the water rescue team that responded from a boat nearby, but the second guy was nowhere to be seen. The river was about 30 meters wide. We had 4 divers in the water (all searching a different area), 5 teams on boats, 2 flow rescue teams searching the side of the rivers and one helicopter looking for heat signatures. There was a barrier about 100 meters down the river, where the body wouldn't have been able to go down the river further. We were there 10 minutes after he fell in, which seems like a lot, but the river wasn't technically an official swimming spot and salvage divers are rare. At 20 min all people that I just told you arrived. We found the body after 45 min, and because of the cold that would still be survivable (my longest surviving guy was 34 min, but 45 min is rare but realistic), but reanimation failed. About 30 highly trained people searching (per diver 2 - or 3 if diving from a diveboat - out of the water, 1 for each flow rescue out of the water normally in teams of 4 or 6, heli crew is 2 people, boatcrew normally 3, and a bunch of people telling us what to do, additionally there is a lot of police, 2 medics and a doctor, but I didn't count them), 300 m², 45 min. It was pretty unlucky, he was too cold for the heli, too deep for the boats, too far from the side of the river to be in the flow rescuers search area and in the last area we got to with the divers (because it seemed more likely for the current to get him elsewhere. But it happens, we didn't make mistakes, people do just die sometimes. You don't find a body that has been lost to the ocean. It's gone. The amount of water being moved is insane, and even with better visibility there is no chance. It might decide to resurface at some point, but that is just RNG. Also: "He was a good swimmer". Those drown all of the time. ALL of the time. First of all, you wouldn't believe how many people just randomly black out or have seizures etc. In the water, that is very deadly. Secondly, there is not much that has to happen for a good swimmer to drown, especially spearfishers who like to dive down a bit. Breath in a bit of water because you thought the surface was too close, get deoriented, start paniking, get a bad cramp, drown. People never want to believe that, but there is a reason you should never swim alone.
