Simiar situation, however much darker, happened in Poland in 2010. In 2010 Lech Kaczyński, who was the President of Poland, was killed in a plane crash. The vacancy was filled by the Marshall of Sejm, and that position was held by Bronisław Komorowski. That meant, he was the acting President of Poland. It so happened, that Komorowski won the presidential election in the second round of voting on 4th of July, defeating Jarosław Kaczyński, Lech's twin brother. Unfortunately, you cannot be both President of Poland and the Marshall of Sejm, so he had to step down from his current office. He resigned on 8th of July, and because the first two positions in the hierarchy were vacated, the role of acting president was given to the Marshall of Senate. Bogdan Borusewicz held the role at the time, so he became the acting president. Few hours later at the same day, Grzegorz Schetyna was elected as Marshall of Sejm, taking over the role of the acting president from Borusewicz, and he held it until 6th of August, when Komorowski was sworn in, ending the reign of the three Acting Presidents of Poland. And here would be an ad for anyone who is sponsoring the comment, but no one does.

Reminds of that time the Senator from Missouri lost re-election to a dead guy. His opponent was the term-limited governor of Missouri who died in a plane crash 2 weeks before election. Given the proximity to the election date, Missouri law barred his name from being removed from the ballot, even though he died. In the end, the late governor managed to beat the incumbent.

3:05 First, it sounds like due to religious convictions (1:27), a fundamental human right and a right enshrined in US Law (The Bill of Rights), Mr. Taylor was ' _unable_ ' to accept the Presidential duties right away. 3:42 Second, it sounds like the conclusion is that being sworn in isn't necessary to serve. (4:45). Lastly, it seems like Mr. Atchison was probably at least close enough to being in a position that could be described as President for a day in that he was recognized by the de facto powers of the land at the time as being in charge if anything went down, even if the de jure reality wasn't so. It wasn't "probably Zachary Taylor" it WAS Zachary Taylor! Even if he hadn't taken the oath of office he automatically became President at noon on March 4, 1849. While the oath is required of the office it is not required to attain the office. The oath follows the attainment of the Office of President. For that reason Lyndon Johnson was addressed as "Mr President" after President Kennedy was pronounced dead on November 22, 1963. He didn't take the oath until he was on Air Force One, but that could have been delayed until after his arrival at Washington without ant doubt as to who was the actual, lawful President.

When I saw the video title, my first thought was when Alexander Haig said "I'm in control here" when Reagan was in the hospital after the assassination attempt.

How about the five presidents before Washington? They had basically the same duties but weren't called president yet. I think the first one was named John Hansen.

BJGvideos They were called President but it was under the Articles of Confederation (before the Constitution was written). And you are correct: John Hanson was the true first President of the USA.

It actually (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) would have been Robert Charles Winthrop who was speaker of the house at the time and right below the president and Vice President in the line of succession.

We've had a guy who, sometimes, lives in the White House and represents the country on the world stage, but we haven't had a President in 3 years. Trump is basically just a dude who puts on a colorful suit and mask and says he's a Superhero. No. You gotta do X Y and Z and have personal traits A B and C to be a Superhero.
