@@rubeushagrid8990 Yes it was sold. But it was not a good deal. It was sold under high military pressure by the english forces that surrounded the town. The inhabitants started to build a wall against these forces, but it wasn't finished (just a mount of dirt) before the ultimatum was handed to them. Nevertheless, when they took over the town, the English named the street next to that pile of dirt Wallstreet. :)

A few points. 1. You got very lucky to see someone wearing wooden shoes in the middle of the center. 2. The I live in a 1930's building and we still use it to get a fridge or a couch in/out. There's usually no space for elevators to be built and they only really became a thing ir the 60's. 3. Quite a few of the other larger and medium sized cities here actually have a red light district Cool video!.

I was born in Holland but grew up in NZ. I went back to Holland and recognized many of the buildings. While I was there I noticed that the buildings slanted forwards at the top sometimes on both sides if the house was on a a corner. I presume it was to make it easier to lift items up the pully wheel.

Mardy That only goes for some houses which are actually unstable. If that goes too far, you’ll see beams and poles outside to support the facade to keep it from falling over, until renovations allow the building to stand straight again. But Oost West is right, the slope was rain protection, it wasn’t so much for the hoisting.

Housing in the US rural is so different. I live in a planned community 3 miles from restaurants, groceries, etc. and 1/2 mile away from a state park with a lake. I recently retired in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in NE Tennessee. Housing is affordable. I'm happy living here in a new home in a community where everyone is about retirement age and friendly. Europeans are so lucky to know where their heritage is. I'm 100% Western European but have no knowledge of how we left and came here to this region. You are luckier than me in your knowledge of where you came from.

hi, im dutch and i work in house renovation of amsterdam houses. the way these houses are constructed is amazing, and yes the stairs are very narrow and steep. that's why we often get the old pully out and attach it to the hook and use it to hoist up our tools. the beam that the hook is attached to, runs all the way to the back of the attic and uses a triangular wooden beam structure to even the load over the building. the amount of weight they can hold blows my mind.

Well, I mean technically he is right. The official language in Flanders is Dutch, not Flemish, so Mika is still a native speaker of Dutch. If you say 'here we have a native English speaker', it would be equally valid to have a Scot pronounce it or a Texan. It's just that some Flemish linguists decided in the 19th century that they'd prefer taking over the standard language from their northen neighbors than to code the massive array of Flemish dialects the common folk spoke at the time. Nowadays some people would argue Flemish is a language and not just an accent and group of dialects, but it's not officially recognised as such.
@mistrants2745

@@musicismydrugxo8217 sure but the thing is, in this context, 'native' also refers to that specific country they are in. Because the pronounce certain names from that country. I’ve been to Amsterdam two months ago and I fell in love with the city, the narrowest house is Nr 7 which is as wide as a door ! I’ll be back to Amsterdam next week for work, can’t wait

Chris, I recently found your videos and got really entertained by them! You are such a creative person, you and Danielle are the cutest couple. I’m not really a follower of youtubers but your content is awesome. Reggie, Tom Hanks and Ralph have the best friend ever! Thanks for all the effort in creating some cool content, my quarantine is a little better :) hugs from Brazil!

I love the storytelling in this video! It really feels less like a vacation vlog and more like an adventure to find these houses while seeing Amsterdam along the way. I find it odd though, as I spent 4 months studying in Amsterdam but still seem to come across new places and things about the city that I never experienced while I was there. I feel pangs of regret for having spent so much time riding across the city but not taking enough time to stop, walk into a cafe I don't know or eat at a restaurant I hadn't been to. Amsterdam has such a whimsical nature about it, that it seems almost better to be a little spontaneous when exploring the city.

This is so beautiful and oddly nostalgic. I haven't even visited Amsterdam yet, but this strangely incites a longing inside me. Nice job.

The "Native Dutch Speaker" is clearly from Belgium. She speaks Dutch, but she also speaks Flemish. There's always people in the comments fighting over wether there's a diistinction, there is. We have the Flemish GPS voice in our car because my dad thought it was funny, once we had an Italian in our car who doesn't speak a word of Dutch and she immediately noticed the accent was Flemish. That gives you an idea how different Flemish is from Dutch. It's similar enough that my Dutch dad understands the directions from the GPS, but it's different enough that a non-speaker can hear the difference. It's so different that Flemish people dub their own Disney movies, but it's so similar that Flemish kids watch the Dutch dub for smaller media like Nickelodeon cartoons. I hope this basically illustrates it. It's like a slightly bigger difference than between American and British English. Flemish is not exactly a totally "different" language, it's very similar to Dutch, but calling it a "collection of Dutch accents" is also misleading. Flemish is a language variety, just like British English, Scots, American English, AAVE etc. So this video is kind of like an American pronouncing London street names. The reason why people get confused about wether it's a language or not, is because Flemish people are basically "bilingual" or "bidialectual" for lack of a better word. Meaning that if a Dutch person speaks in Standard Dutch to a Flemish person, the Flemish person can understand him, but if a Flemish person speaks Flemish to the Dutch person, the Dutch person can barely understand her, so the Flemish person will by default speak Standard Dutch back to the Dutch person, with a Flemish accent, and most Dutch people don't even realize that Flemish is different, because Flemish people talk Standard Dutch to them and for any "official" thing in their own country that Dutch media might pick up, like the Flemish evening news, politics, radio, official statements, writing, etc.

That translator has a real heavy accent from the southern part of the Netherlands you should have taken one who is from Amsterdam or Almere I myself am living in Amsterdam and it is more usual to use a heavy r and a heavy g instead of the soft r and g that they use in the more southern parts of the Netherlands That would just have that little bit of extra detail
