Years later, David Gilmour recorded another concert at Pompeii. After Pink Floyd's final break up, RIchard Wright continued to perform and tour with David's solo band. You'll notice (especially in part II) a direct interplay, sort of a conversation, between guitar and keyboards. But after Richard passed away, David vowed to never perform Echos again, since that "conversation" was so personal, so the last recorded performance was at the "Live at Gdansk" concert video. So in the later DG concert, live at Pompeii, Echos was noticeably missing.

They recorded a whole concert here, not just echoes. It is fucking fantastic start to finish. They split echoes into two parts, so you may want to find part two to react to. Roger did get his jab at Andrew Lloyd Webber, though. Listen to his song It’s A Miracle from his album Amused To Death, and you will see what I mean.

the way this song goes from so smooth and almost relaxed to an almost haunted sound... just even Gilmour's guitar goes from so clean to so screaming.... feels like as they are playing the literal atmosphere/history of *that space* and what happened there like takes them over... and takes over the music. i mean, how *could* you be as in tune to everything as Pink Floyd were and *not* have the haunting history of that place influence you as you express the music as purely as they did?

Today, with all these "experts" helping people sue big names for millions over tiny snippets that kinda, sorta sound similar... they'd have had no problem suing him. Back then, suing someone for using a run up and down the chromatic scale in a similar way might not have been winnable. The only one who knows for sure if he'd ever heard Echos, is Webber. Yes, it sounds very similar. Yes, Webber has been known to lift bits from other piece of music, but only classical pieces that are no longer under copyright. Bottom line, is that it's just running up and down the notes of the chromatic scale, and the way it's played is actually pretty different.

This is really the only decent live footage from this period of their careers, just before DSOTM hits....really gives you a sense of how great they were before that landmark album. In agreeing to do the Live At Pompeii movie, Pink Floyd made the director/producer contractually agree that they would NOT overdub the live music scenes with studio music. What you see of the band's performance exactly conforms to what you hear of the band's performance because it IS the band's performance.

something wonderful, I listened to that song so many times when I was in the army on night duty (it kept me going). I always wanted to learn to play that harmony of tones with gentle transitions, and now that I've retired with a rather meager equipment, I think I've improvised those events in the song quite well. When I see that, I feel somewhat exalted, I think of the bass parts.

It is absolutely necessary to put everything back in its time. It is absolutely necessary to listen to this recording in its absolute context!. . . . What was it?. . . . . We were emerging from a frenzy that the Beatles had generated only ten years ago. What are we talking about? Commercial melodies, without pretension, but which opened the floodgates to the concept of a group. . . Above all, for having personally experienced it, this fashion which relegated Elvis to the background, i. e. THE LONG HAIR! The Beatles, in my opinion, will go down in history as the ones who finished breaking the wall that Elvis had started to blow up. Then comes, during these years, Pink Floyd. . . They are really the ones who blew up the glass ceiling. . . With them, it became. . . Universe is no limit. . . But not only their universe, but of all those who will be able to follow (Genesis, the Who, Metallica etc. )

Regarding Cinematography; Each shot is allowed it’s time. There is no rush. We watch Dave for a while, then Rick for a while, then we slowly Pan from left to right, etc. No need for 4 edits per second. I find this so soothing. I’m curious if I’m alone in thinking this, and if anyone thinks we’ll ever see a revival of this style. This applies to nearly all concert movies up to the early 80s. Woodstock, Last Waltz, Queen in Montreal are examples. By the time I was a young teenager in the 90s, the “quick edit” style was already in full motion. To me, that style was the norm. The first concert movie I saw without those fast edits made a strong impression. To me it felt new and refreshing.
