Lived beautiful years and did my medical residency training in my beloved Halifax. Those days were my best, and I enjoyed every single moment. Wish to come back and write the last chapter in my life in the city that I loved more than any other place in this word. I really miss Halifax 😢

Getting so fed up with Toronto, was born and been here for 52 years now, it’s just too crazy, too crowded, not the city I once knew...BUT Halifax looks so beautiful, so calming, so peaceful. My mom is from Antigonish, about 2 hours away from Halifax, but I’m SERIOUSLY considering moving to Halifax permanently. I have a huge family scattered all across Nova Scotia, and I’ve always felt right at home every time I visit (been there 6 times now...last time in spring 2019). Both my parents are still with me thank god, but they cannot travel alone. They are both almost 90, with many health issues, but still live in their own home, I just help them out as they both are still able to live relatively independently....but when mom wants to see her family I must go with her, problem is, I never want to come back home! My folks live in Burlington, about 60 kilometres from my home in downtown Toronto....the only reason I haven’t left yet is because of them, as the depend on me for many things, and I cannot be that selfish...but if dad passes first, mom and I already agreed to move back to NS...well, she’s moving back, I’m just moving. She has a many sibling still thriving in their 90’s and even their 100’s, and I know she wants to be buried in her family plot. I’d go nuts in a small town, so we agreed I’d live in Halifax, and she with her 2 sisters in Antigonish, so I’d be close by. I pray dad lives for ages, but the reality is, after surviving lung cancer, and quadruple bypass, diabetes, and a host of problems, I fear I may be moving sooner then later, so, can anyone recommend an area of Halifax to move to? It’s a very small city compared to what I’m use to, but I LOVE nature, and I know I can have both in Halifax, so any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

PS - in addition to my previous comment, I forgot to mention that if it wasn’t for Halifax my parents wouldn’t be my parents. My mom and her older sister left their hometown and moved to Halifax when they were 19 and 20 respectively, and decided to go to a naval dance one night. My father was in the Royal Canadian Navy, and stationed in Halifax. My dad and his best friend at the time went to the same dance, as my father was dancing with my mom‘s sister, that sister‘s boyfriend walked in, and in a panic, she yelled to my mother to take her place, and to dance with my father, so her sister‘s boyfriend didn’t see her dancing with another man, although it was all in good fun, she just felt self-conscious I guess. Anyways, if it wasn’t for that quick twist of fate, I wouldn’t be here, because after about two minutes of dancing together, they both said it was love at first sight. It’s so cute, especially now when they’re almost 90, when they talk about it, they sound like two teenagers again. After the dance was over, dad asked my mother out for a coffee, forgetting that he was so broke, he didn’t have any money, so my mother offered to pay for the coffee, my dad said he knew right then and there that he found his life partner, and they’ve been together ever since. They got married in Halifax, and lived there for another seven years until my father‘s military term was up. Because dad was born and raised here in Toronto, he desperately wanted to come home, but my mom had never gone anywhere outside of Nova Scotia, but eventually conceded, and moved here with dad, and she has been here ever since, being the only member of her family to leave Nova Scotia, correction, the only member of her generation, I have cousins all over the country. But just to hear them talk about it is so sweet. The last time we were in Halifax was in 2019, for the first time ever, all three of us were there together (normally my mother couldn’t escape her family, because they’re so big and numerous, she never found time to do any sightseeing, whereas I would takeoff for the day and go to Halifax, and do some looking around), so they showed me exactly where they met, the coffee house they went to after the dance, that amazingly, is still in business, their house that they first lived in, pretty much every single detail of their lives while they live there, just watching their facial expressions and the love they have for each other, literally had me in tears, and I’m not a guy who cries very easily. They’ve been married now for 63 years, and still act like teenagers, especially when they’re going down memory lane. That’s why Halifax holds such a special place in my heart, because if Halifax didn’t exist, neither would I!❤️

TJ, thanks for such an interesting and sincere history of your life! I am pretty surprised that the man may talk about such things freely.
@GIguy4 жыл бұрын
@@solarscream88 thanks, all my friends and family constantly tease me, saying that I suffer from excessive verbal diarrhea! LOL! I have always worn my heart on my sleeve, I don’t believe in keeping secrets, and I list by one simple rule, I don’t do anything, that I won’t be ashamed to tell anyone about it. Naturally discretion is a wise precaution using a public forum like KZbin, which is why I don’t give specific names, but I have no problem sharing my stories, because they’re all true, and on many levels, countless people have told me that they can relate to whatever I’m talking about, and if there’s one thing I have a passion for, is connecting with, and hopefully helping, as many people as I possibly can. Besides, I just love the story of how my parents met, it’s almost sounding like a Disney movie, but that’s what really happened. If ever I decided to become a writer, I have enough stories the right dozens, if not hundreds of books about! In today’s world, the art of conversation is dying, which is another reason I encourage people talk talk openly, I refuse to be bound, by abbreviations and emojis, if I’m going to tell personal stories, then I’m giving everyone the details. The biggest complaint I get is that I talk far too much, but I’d rather that, then the opposite. You’d be amazed at how many good friends I have made because of my willingness to be so open about my life, And all the people in it. Glad you liked it, cheers!

Your comment is something like mine. My English father's ship was sunk at the end of 1940. He spent days in a lifeboat and was rescued by a ship after 18 days. The ship managed to reach Halifax where he was taken to a hospital. While in the hospital a nurse, my mother, was given the position of caring for him. She later went to England and married him. After my sister was born the family returned to Halifax and I started school in Lunenburg. Now I live in Europe but have many great memories of the times I have been in Halifax.

I live in the Halifax area and work downtown. The reason in the past few years that Halifax has grown so much is because of the ship building contract that will see around 60 billion dollars invested into new war ships being built in Halifax. For a city our size that is a stupid amount of money. That attracted more and more investors trying to get a piece of the pie.... i am sure there are other factors but I believe this is one of the largest

Why doesn't Halifax have an NHL franchise?
@TilleredSticks4 жыл бұрын
We are too small of a city to afford a NHL team and its infastructure. For now anyway. Halifax is growing fast and may soon be looking at that being a possibility

I like it but North American cities don't have the character and life that European cities do. Everything is too spread out, they aren't walkable, there are no sit-down cafés and many buildings across town look rather boxy. They're functional, especially if you have a car (and you better do), but absolutely nothing beats a good old European city like Zurich, Amsterdam, Munich, Stockholm, Vienna, Brussels, and so many others. I still love Canada though.

Montreal is close

@@ashwinraghunath4453 That's what everybody says and it's true. But it's still only one city among too many. Anyway, North America is great in its own way and so is Europe.

Montréal layout is the perfect balance between a North American city and European city. All the store downtown are walkable distance including a very well organized subway system. The streets are animated with a lot of café, restaurants and bars. What a life in Montréal!!!

@@californiabob3231 That's true. Montreal is an exception. I wish there were more cities like that in North America.

@@timsummers870 There’s one more city like this in North America and it’s called Québec city. I went there and I totally thought that I was transported somewhere in old Europe. Streets are fully animated with restaurants, bars and café. A real passionate city. Québec city is a really something else.
