Yes...his mom told him to work on his voice by walking around panting like a dog to build his vocals..very cool. The liberty concert was awesome!! They we're so frickin large then...very energetic! Big bam boom was huge back then...I was a senior in high school and loved this.. Personally, I think daryl has the best vocals bar none.

If that's the case, I'm surprised because his technique could use a polishing. So what if she's a vocal teacher. The question is...did she not give him any lessons in technique? And what kind of genre does she teach?

Although he still sounded good, I think Daryl's singing range started to drop a bit around 1984. He actually seemed to have more range a year earlier with "Say It Isn't So". By 1988, the drop was very noticeable especially on the Ooh Yeah! tour. Interestingly, I met Daryl and John in 1988 and I asked Daryl about the end of "Out of Touch". He said he just ad-libed all of that stuff at the end. Also asked him the meaning of "Big Bam Boom". He said, "It doesn't mean anything. It's just a sound."
@flyingfluffyhockey2 жыл бұрын
I commented this above before seeing your post. They recorded BBB directly after the R&S tour with literally no break. Daryl has said that recording that album was like pulling teeth because everyone was so exhausted at the start. The constant touring put a strain on his voice and he probably blew his top register on the BBB tour. Gave his voice extra character for sure, but agreed, by Ooh Yeah he had dropped a level in an attempt to stay smooth. IMO

Now THIS was fascinating! Excellent choice for a vocal case study. Daryl Hall was kind of a "pioneer" in the mainstream, as he was one of the only white "soul" pop singers. What you did with the effects was surprisingly effective! I didn't expect that it would blend in so well with the instruments - it kind of filled in the dryness and huge gap (that I never noticed before this video!) between the vocals and the instrument tracks. You might say that while the original was "lo-fi", your remix was the modern, hi-fi version. Great job! :-)

Actually Ken, could YOU please cover “Do What You Want, Be What You Are”? 70s DH voice had a lot more range. My personal thought on perhaps why? I don't know if it's just because we're our own worst critics but it always feels like my pitchiness is so much worse than other people's pitchiness, which like you point out, often just feels like "energy" or "emotion" for them, definitely just registers as "mistake" when I listen to myself.

You are right about Daryls Vocals. The way you describe them in this song is spot on but he did it on all his vocals. Tommy Mattola and Arif Mardin well actually Arif. Made them a big name. I was in the era when T-Bone was the bass. Paul Pesco was the lead guitar. Bobby Mayo on keys (Although he was Peter Framptons Keyboard player he played with Hall & Oates when Peter was not touring) Bobby used to carry a mini Taylor guitar and taught me to play a few songs. Mikey Braun on drums. Shit I forgot to mention Charlie DeChant Sax Keys and percussion. Sadly T-Bone and Bobby are no longer with us.

Love this series. You can see clearly their style in singing. Love the term character singing. Like the blue-eyed-soul and blues singers they are not too focused on too much perfection, they are focused mainly on the emotions. I recall that Richie Blackmore's comment on Joe Satch's playing, he said that Joe's playing is too perfect and he loves players that is not too perfect. Daryl's range is not too high and his pitch is not on spot sometimes but he managed to work it out. That's amazing! I think it's character that should stand out over technicality. But if you have CHARACTER + TECHNIQUE = KEN TAMPLIN! Btw, love all the vocal fx you poured on this series. Thanks a lot sir Ken.

Hi Ken, the flatness in the 60s-80s era can be explained also by the fact that the used to increase the speed of the recording tape, and that may lead to flatness or sharpness (as a clear example, you can hear "Everybodywants to rule the world" by Tears for Fears )

He seems to use bits of microtonality to add shadows under certain notes to make them have more dimension. His touches of falsetto are like floating clouds that descend back to a more solid tone without crashing. Then he throws in descending runs, sometimes exotic sequences, that hit so perfectly on the pitches, sometimes hitting the same bottom note he slightly darkened with microtonality last time with perfect pitch this time, creating a micro resolution.
