Thanks for your reaction to this one! Darryl Hall has a great internet program called "Live From Darryl's House" where he invites some great bands to have dinner and hang out for a jam session. Hall & Oates were the most successful duo of all time because they truly liked and respected each other. They realized they had different strengths and knew that together they were better off. Plus they were supportive of each others side projects cause they knew it would end up making them better artists in the long run.

Per Songfacts, John Oates elaborated on the song's theme of individuality and personal choice in a Billboard interview: "The theme is sort of ongoing with us, that people should think for themselves, do what they believe. They shouldn't act or do things just because other people do, or because the government says to do it or because their fathers and mothers say this is the right thing. People have to be able to assess each situation, based on their own beliefs, and not just follow along."

H&O had many hits, one right after another, and I don't think anyone was played on the radio as much as they were during their peak years. From 1974 to 1991 they had 29 Top 40 songs, 16 of which were Top Ten and 6 of those were #1 on the Billboard charts (including this one). Everyone will have their favorites, but you chose a good one here.

Still on my playlist. This song was thrown together, and it's always fantastic. They used a preloaded keyboard drum, because they thought this would be a demo, but it turned out so good, they didn't change a thing. Confusing? Yes. It doesn't really explain much. She doesn't get his soul. We get to hear it, though. Hypocritical? Yes. He "can't go, for just repeating the same old lines", then he repeats the line from the previous verse. That's hilarious!!! Still the ultimate jam? Yes.

Hi Brad & Lex, While your analysis was very interesting and showed that you both have quite the vivid imagination, this track was about the record label or their manager in the music industry wanting them to do some things that they absolutely were not willing to do; this is actually a protest song, as they stuck to their guns and they stayed true to their convictions as artists!!! And they did it with so much smoothness, soul & style!!! Mic Drop!!! 🎤
