And yall dont understnad how freaking HUGE the whole workout and aerobics craze was. This song was literally everywhere.
@MacMc6912 жыл бұрын
I grew up in that era... You're right, it was huge, so much so that some of the junior high schools back then offered Jazzercise as part of their physical education program. I don't recall off hand if we had it in high school, but it was present in junior high. And no doubt, this song helped to push it.
@s.mcpherson63542 жыл бұрын
That's hard to understate, isn't it? Part of that was better science around diet and exercise. But before that, and songs like this, gyms were for body builders and boxers, and they rarely included cardio. There was no such thing as gym fashion. Then all of a sudden Jazzercise and a few others caused an avalanche of change and suddenly shorts or a leotard and a gym membership was a normal thing to have for someone in their 20's or 30's.

It was banned. LoL I was just going to write that myself!😂
@bchooper56032 жыл бұрын
It wasn't banned outright in any U.S. states, it was banned by some radio stations in some states. There's a differences. When this song came out in 1981 there were over 8,000 radio stations and, unlike now, the majority of them were independent and locally owned, not corporate owned. So this song being banned on radio stations wasn't widespread and it was mainly banned by radio stations in Utah. As for the music video, MTV cut out the end of the video when they would air it.

The song was about having sex ... she just used the fitness craze of the early 1980s to "disguise" what the lyrics really were ... which makes it that much more amazing that this was the #1 song of not only 1982, but the entire 1980s (it spent 10 weeks at #1 despite many US radio stations not playing the song due to it's sexual context). She was also a HUGE supporter of the LGBTQ community, which is why you see actual gay men at the end of the video. RIP to my first crush, Olivia Newton-John.

She said let's get ANIMAL LEXXIE, . 1981 this came out. It was my first song I remember hearing on the radio played in such heavy rotation my 5 year old self remembers it. Olivia was either 31/32 when this came out. Hiding the meaning of such subjects was nesccesary back then. Censorship much more stringent and outlets for music more controlled and fewer options to bypass it existed. If you wanted it to be seen and heard you played the game. And YES Olivia helped start the trend of aroebics as fashion wear. She was on top of the pops then and as big a name in her day as Madonna, Kylie, Brittany or Beyonce would be in theirs. Oh and congratulations on the newest member of the couch gang being announced. Very happy for you both , Brad & Lex. 😍🤰

The whole workout fitness aerobics craze was new in the 80s. There was a whole fashion craze went along with it as well. It was literally everywhere. Now it's more about gyms, but when this will started you could do it at home, there were VHS videos of fitness routine (there was no internet back then remember) that sold very well. Nowadays classes are more on gyms, but it's still there, just not in the same way. As for the whole let's get animal, which are the lyrics, I guess since pruedish, ultra religious communities might have a problem with it, but I've never heard this song being banned, some stations probably chose not to and l air it, which was their choice, but even as a kid I never read anything into this at all. To me it was just a fun seeing. Sometimes people can overanalyze things and to too far.

Per Songfacts The song was released about a month after MTV went on the air, so the video got a lot of spins on the new channel. In the clip, Newton-John is shown teasing fat men as they try to exercise in some kind of locker room/gym. The whole idea of the video was to distract from the fact that the song is about sex, and fat guys working out accomplished that goal. Aerobics was just gaining popularity when the song came out, so the video jumped on the trend and included some scenes where Olivia leads a cardio routine the guys can't handle. Eventually, the schlubs are replaced by fit, muscular men who ignore Olivia and pair off, indicating that they are gay. Despite the lascivious themes, the video was a huge commercial and critical hit - it won the Grammy for Video of the Year.

The health craze was definitely a new thing in the 80s. Jobs had become more and more urbanized in the few decades prior. People were more sedentary, sitting in offices all day. Health gyms became a thing. Home workout videos became a thing. Before this, people’s exercise was their job.
