Actually, when Dr. Loomis screams “WTH?!” that was Malcolm McDowell’s real reaction to the window being broken out. He wasn’t told it would happen. At least not as such. Also, most of the dialogue in Smith’s Grove was improvised. RZ told one of the two actors how to open the scenes, but left it to them to take the scene however they wanted. So to that extent, Michael’s shrug and “I don’t know” is also a real reaction.
@bananatiergod4 жыл бұрын
That is honestly pretty cool. Rob Zombie might not be a perfect director, but it's clear that he has the skill when it comes to intense horror movies.
@louis84874 жыл бұрын
@@bananatiergod Eh it can be cool. Depends on the actors. Leaving everything up to the actors isn't always a cool move, it's just expecting them to do a job that isn't what they trained for. It's wanting them to do the director/writer's job for them.

What was so scary about the original for me anyhow was that Michael wasn't given a full backstory. Before the whole "Curse of Michael Myers"thing I mean. In the original, he stabs his sister to death and we never know why he does it.His home life seems pretty middle class, it doesn't seem like he comes from a broken home where his moms a stripper and shit like that. But he just goes crazy. I think the Rob Zombie version gives us a different take(for the first half)but overall it doesn't work. We're clearly supposed to feel sympathy for Myers, just as we're supposed to feel sympathy for the characters from "Devils Rejects"and its sequel.

The original Halloween was Laurie Strode's story. The remake was been Michael and Loomis' story. I think Laurie should've been a minor character and the family should be normal. Also, Loomis should be this father figure who wants to help Michael but knows he has to resort to killing him.

I like to think that Michael killing his family in this version was for Laurie. The only two people Michael loved were Laurie and his mother. Him killing his stepdad, and Judith was to keep Laurie from growing up abused like he was. He did it all for her. And the nurse was later killed because she touched Michael's possessions, by that point he became very territorial which was also seen in the unrated cut when he killed the two guys who were raping the female patient (as tasteless as that was) only after they touched his masks. And he never actually wanted to kill Laurie throughout most of the film, he only wanted her to know who he was. It's not until she stabs him that it sets him off-kilter.
@arachnesakura93755 жыл бұрын
it was needed in a way. the human killings all started from when his older sister was having sex. it was like he was coming full circle and starting off again. because at that point Micheal has been silent and rather easy patient for the last 15 years. what sets him off? the rapists messing up his stuff. a repeated trigger for him from his past. it jumpstarted him back onbhis killing spree. plus its his staple in almost every movie of the Halloween franchise anyone having sex or well rape are the first ones to die. and while yeah he starts off with killing his stepdad first (its been a while since ive seen it so i may have it mixed around) he was heavily abusing every member of the family. his older sister was nearly as bad in his eyes so she and her bf had to die too. he only loved Laurie and his mother. i agree however tho that he did it all for Laurie in a twisted protective way. i feel for his mom but at the same time i have a hard time feeling bad for her considering she willingly commit suicide wgile leaving her infant daughter without care or anything. her daughter would have starved to death or from dehydration. i would have felt more if she had removed Laurie from the home first and that be why she lived somewhere else. the final act of love from her mother. but no she gave 0 fucks about her only child she has left.

@@AgentRedgrave I like the 2018, my only complaint is that it doesn't have a distinct atmosphere to it. Like the original Halloween had a quiet and lonely feel to it, as if you're really trapped in a house. A chunk of 4 feels like you're actually going trick-or-treating, before transitioning into a chase throughout the neighborhood. 5 feels surprisingly autumnal with it's hazy cinematography and choice of set pieces. The 09 remake feels like a gritty grindhouse movie from the 70's. While the 18 remake succeeds in making Micahel menacing and it's characters interesting it sacrifices a cohesive atmosphere throughout the film in favor of set peices for Michael to kill in. I hope the sequels change that.

I honestly have to disagree with the stuff with Myers as a kid. I think it would've been better if Myers didn't come from a shitty, abusive household, but a fairly normal one. Maybe not the ideal of a typical suburban home, but one where things were fairly well off. That would've made his transition to a psychopath even more jarring and horrifying. Not to mention "serial killers have bad childhoods" is an annoying cliche at this point. And with the hospital scenes, I don't think seeing Michael crying and saying nothing was wrong is the way to go. It feels really out of place with the fact that he becomes a killer. Why not build up the horror a little more, showing that there's something inherently wrong with this kid? It would make Loomis' scenes a lot less confusing and his speech about Michael being a killer actually make sense. Him saying he's Michael's best friend could just be him saying things, but clearly terrified of him. In this, it kinda seems like Loomis just gave up on him a little too easily and actually made things worse. This movie has its merits, but it just feels pointless to me. Not to mention it misses the entire point that John Carpenter set up in the origin: that you're not supposed to relate to Michael. That he's this mysterious killing force with no explanation. If you're going to go the extra mile and show Michael's origins, then less is more. You don't need to spell everything out for the audience.
@melancholyentertainment6 жыл бұрын
+Mason Wright It's constructive criticism.
@quinnlee-miller97926 жыл бұрын
Mysterious Enigma I mean, what's interesting about some spoiled kid turning into a psychopath? Isn't the "rich/well off bully" cliche pretty much just an introduction into psychopathy that character would enter had time passed? Seeing as how brutal and cruel they can be on their own, for no good reason. Having him come from a broken home kinda makes you root for him, especially in this day and age. Seeing him in the hospital makes ya feel like he could get help but you know it's hopeless, adding to the dread if the inevitable. It's a reimagining, it's better not being closer to the original and at least it was trying to be it's own thing. Not that you're wrong, I suppose. It "could" have been better but this was something different. Whether or not it was good is up to you but it tried.

I honestly don't think we should know Michael Myers backstory beyond "he killed most his family as a child". I feel like the appeal of Michael Myers is that he's an unstoppable killing machine that you can't sympathize or reason with. Knowing that he's an abuse victim takes away from the horror of Myers. That's what Jason Vorhees is for. I also don't like when horror movies make pretty much every single character in a movie an asshole. I can't feel bad when any of them die, since they're so annoying that I want them to die, and this movie exemplifies that.

@munromister7777 жыл бұрын
I think that's a good thing. Michael Myers, at least as a child, was a normal kid, who just snapped one day, and killed most of his family. It shatters the innocence of the small town, and makes a person wonder if anyone is capable of that. To keep that idea intact, you can't give him too much of a reason. After snapping like that, he literally is just a souless monster, a boogey man, and the only reason I'd accept for him constantly going after Laurie is that he wants to finish the job, and sever the last cords to his original life.

Personally I think the 2013 remake's not bad enough to justify it. I actually liked a lot about it and I'm a massive nerd for this story. A lot of the cast in the remake were bland, but I appreciated how they at least tried to remake the book and not just re-hash the movie. I mean they kind of did but still.
@jessica23claire7 жыл бұрын
I. Th. I actually think the way Chloe used her powers was more accurate to the book, especially in the prom scene where it looks like she's thinking about all the ways to kill them which she does in the book. She shines there and in the stuff with Margaret but other than that definitely agree she was miscast. I really enjoyed Julianne Moore as Margaret as well. She was more subtle than Piper but interesting in her own right. Thinking back I do agree it doesn't feel like a horror movie but honestly some Stephen King stories just don't when adapted. I just watched the original It and it just felt like a great story with scary bits in it.

I honestly didn’t mind Rob Zombie delving into Michael Myers’ past, but I agree with Critic, his family being abusive/dysfunctional trailer-trash and him being bullied at school is too obvious as to why Michael snapped. Honestly, like in the John Carpenter version, him coming from a seemingly normal family and him having a seemingly normal school life would’ve been even more scary because you’re left to interpret why he went insane and became who he is while still keeping him a mystery.

I really don't think Rob Zombie understood Halloween. A large part of the horror of Micheal Myers character was that as a kid he seemed like a normal kid. That was why in the original towards the end when his mask is removed he just looks like a normal guy. It really seems to me that the story told in the remake of Halloween would have worked much better as a Friday the 13th story.
@floyd23867 жыл бұрын
John Carpenter gave Zombie his blessing to do a remake, but he wanted Zombie to make it his own and he definitely did that. I agree though on the point that Zombie's movie would probably be better off as it's own original franchise instead of a Halloween remake.
@rayruckus44467 жыл бұрын
floyd2386 Regardless of whether or not this is "John Carpenter approved" this movie just did not have the right feel for Halloween. Again I want to reiterate it wasn't a terrible movie and I believe what I actually said is that Rob Zombie would have been better Suited to control the Friday the 13th franchise, I do agree that it would have been a decent Standalone film. I've said since the first time I saw this movie that it would have been much more horrifying if they had kept the character of Michael Myers as a normal kid in a normal family. What's more terrifying then a normal everyday child that has no inclination to go around slitting throats that just decides to one day gut his sister. Instead Rob Zombie decides that Michael's got to have issues cuz every single and trama person in the Zombieverse is a douchebag. Ain't his fault it's the shitty upbringing. And by the way he has the balls to change the movie so drastically in the beginning and then follow the latter half almost beat for beat. All the kills are the same until it gets to the end. I mean which is it are you staying faithful to the source material or are you making a shot for shot because you can't really tell? It's definitely not the worst horror remake ever "cough cough" Hitcher, still giving him Halloween it was riding on the Rob Zombie hype train.
@shinanimedubs12697 жыл бұрын
I feel Michael Myers is scarier in the original because there's something unexplainable to him, something mystical. This movie shows his whole upbringing and it really kills his whole mystique and makes him this tangible, killable thing, which I find considerably less scary than something I can't understand.

This was not the second best in the series. The original part 2 is EASILY better than this movie. I honestly HATED the first 30-40 minutes of this movie. I get that they had to do something different, but giving Myers a reason for doing what he does kind of misses the whole point. I know that they did give SOME back story in Halloween 2, but they didn't go into any real detail. This movie was basically gore porn, which I can appreciate in movies like Saw, but not so much in a Halloween movie. That being said, I did enjoy this movie for what it was. I just don't think it is close to the second best. I would take Halloween 4 and H20 over this one any day. I also can't dismiss the hospital scene in Halloween 6. That was pretty great.

I applaud your commitment to the material. I commit as deeply to the stuff I love as well, sometimes probably to the point of apophenia. We all do, and it's a wonderful thing. But if the subconscious resonance of the white horse is a real thing (assuming the book is also a real thing, or, if it is, has credibility), Zombie shouldn't have felt as compelled to tell us what it means; it should register in our minds on some level, and he should give his viewer enough credit to do more of the work, as Lynch does. I feel he had to explain it with title cards because he knew on some level it didn't really work. I'm glad for you if you had a different experience, but it didn't work at all for me, and I'm far from alone.
