A killer tire. It's finally come to this. How can someone make a movie about a killer tire? Nostalgia Critic looks at how and, more importantly, why? Let's take a look at Rubber.
Support this week's Charity - www.fotfp.org/
Rubber is a 2010 English-language French independent horror film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers. It was directed and written by Quentin Dupieux.

Pretty sure it's also a satire on "deep" "artsy" films made by people who don't even understand the subject they think they're commenting on. ("Why is the president shot by a random man, in a movie about JFK? No reason! This film is a homage to No Reason....")
@princessthyemis

Supposedly, if you dig into the subtext it's an exploration of many common film tropes through the lens of a ridiculous movie about a tire. It's far more than I could fit in a single comment, but the movie seems to have been written to subvert and capitalize on horror tropes. Or Lizzy said, it's a satire of sorts. Such as, "over the course of the film all the characters who thought they were watching/making a fiction end up leaning on the fourth wall and finding out it's not there - this is what gets the spectator killed in the end." (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/Rubber)

In all honesty, this is a pretty well-rounded film. The plot always comes full circle, and you’re always able to bounce-back from a plot hole. The suspension this movie creates is rather good. It always gets you with those twists and turns. 10/10, IGN. A plot I can roll with.

@funnyblog100

@@Overlord69 Actually most of that was not Doug's fault it was mostly Mike Michaud and Doug's brother Rob. The worst thing that they said about Doug was that he was just kind of an idiot but he is a good person. I met Doug at a convention he was really nice and he really cares about his fans. Rob honestly was not that bad at the time either but Doug was the more friendly and outspoken of the two. Doug himself had very little to do with the channel awesome scandal and was barely mentioned in the document because they could not really say that many bad things about him. He just happens to be the face of Channel Awesome so people will blame him even if he is not responsible. He was one of the few guys that they could not really blame because he was not aware of what was going on.

The problem I've always had with self-referential movies is there's really no joke you can make about them. It's like trying to make fun of a clown; anything you'd make fun of is done on purpose. Ironically what I found most disappointing about this movie is it isn't dumb enough. They obviously cared enough about bringing this idea to screen, but then just had everyone act as if they didn't care. I can get some entertainment value from dumb ideas, but not when they people making the movie know the idea is dumb and insist on making that clear to you. Well then, why did you bother? "Why did you come see this then?" Er... touche I guess.

If you want to see a whole series that seems like an SCP, watch "Popee the Performer". It's a kid's show that actually ran on a kid's television network in Japan... and in just about every episode, at least one of the main characters die in a graphic way, such as being impaled by a claymore with the final scene of the episode being their skewered corpse blowing in the wind. I swear I'm gonna try and find this show again 20 years from now only to find recordings of static and white noise. It's like Itchy and Scratchy fell into the uncanny valley with CG animation worse than Jimmy Neutron.

Stop whatever you’re doing right now and go watch it. It’s a(n almost) great film if you look at it as the dry comedy it is. Best I can describe the film is it has the retarded premise of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, the dry humor Napoleon Dynamite, the absurd, irreverent, film-dismantlement approach of Monty Python, and the trolling of Freddy Got Fingered, all deep fried and left out in the sun too long that only an autistic chaotic-neutral fuckwit like myself would enjoy. The film is a recipe for disaster that more or less accomplishes its goal of being exactly what it claims to be, “a homage to no reason.” I’d probably give it a 6or7,closer-to-6/10. Note: 5/10 is average for me, I usually reserve 8+/10 for films I predict will be analyzed and featured on TCM or similar classic movie channels in 50+ years.

About only part I didn't love about Rubber was the "No reason!" introduction. I'm already going with a movie about homicidal psychokinetic tyre, it's a given that I'm cool with "no reason" without being beaten over the head with it. Minor flaw in great movie. Like the pterodactyls in Citizen Kane ;)

If someone thought they were really competent at what they did, looked down on others thinking they were "beneath" them, and ignored all signs that told them otherwise, this is the kind of movie they would make.

From the director when asked about the opening monologue: "I thought, `Ok, I just want to shoot a movie about a living tire and I don’t want to explain why it came to life.’ So, that’s how I came up with this stupid idea for the monologue. I told myself, `It’s movie-making, it’s not real life and I can do whatever I want.’ If it’s well done, you will believe. I needed a good introduction to the plot, because otherwise people would have been confused, I think… I don’t know. To be honest, I wrote the movie in three weeks without thinking too much. I’m analyzing it now, but wrote it very quickly without thinking." Yeah, he REALLY seems up his own ass, and feels like he's better than everyone. Wait. No he doesn't.

@@aaronlandry3934 He didn't put much thought into writing it because that wasn't part of his goal of making it. Not every movie is designed to be a crowd pleaser. Some are just experiments. Especially indie movies, which this is, because they're done cheap, and you don't need to recoup the cost. Go watch Visitor Q, and tell me that was made to appeal to people.

Have you ever seen Repo Man? Among the many things that make it quirky fun, since they couldn't afford any brand licenses, literally every visible product in the movie is in a totally blank white package with nothing but the name of the item in black block text. BEER. SOAP. MAGAZINE. CEREAL. It's one of the more delightful surreal bits in that movie.
