Hello from Canada! A wonderful video, some titles for my TBR notebook. Being of English extraction, A Very British Murder looks fascinating and my local library has a copy! The Last Witch of Scotland also looks interesting. Good reading to you.

Very thoughtful recommendations! Especially the film recs. Subtle, suspenseful, psychological stuff is always "scarier " than gore, imo. Lovely video! 🎃

I love Practical Magic and all that but I needed some fresh recs for the spooky season aimed more at us 'mature' people. Let me know what you thought and if any might make their way into your reading, watching or listening platforms?

I love the country house setting for a mystery which has been done by so many authors, each one unique and interesting.

This was just perfect!!! Reminded me to get onto some of those books that have been in my tbr for years. I’m looking forward to Friday where I might just pour myself a cocktail and grab possibly Frankenstein whilst listening to your playlist,

When in doubt for a cocktail go with rum! 😄 My favorite "spooky" books are: The Graveyard Book We Have Always Lived in the Castle My absolute favorite Halloween movie is Arsenic and Old Lace with the one and only Cary Grant

DuMaurier is always a good idea in spooky season, as is Irving!

Thank you for these great recos! I grew up in England and we never had Halloween back in the 70’s. I did Halloween for my kids as we live in Canada and are heavily(unfortunately) influenced by the US. Now my kids are long gone , I take great pleasure in shutting off the lights and hiding out with a nice cup of tea and a book! I’m a bit of a humbug as far a Halloween is concerned😂. I have Date with Death on my TBR since you told us about it when you read it. I think Frankenstein has got to make my TBR at some point. The Goonies is a classic!!!

I think I''d add A Picnic at Hanging Rock, an enchanting film by Peter Weir. It has the dreamlike quality of The Virgin Suicides, good films to watch back to back this Halloween season.

ooh yes, a great choice!

If I watch anything spooky it’s usually something I’ve seen before that I know the outcome of and is a bit silly. Adams Family, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein, phantom of the opera, 1944 canterville ghost…
@AngelasBookcaseАй бұрын
ha I love the Adams Family. Morticia is fabulous :)

Ive got a copy of Daphne du Maurier The Doll short stories which were written in her early 20s early in her career have read a few which ive really enjoyed. Im struggling with concentration currently so looking at shorter books. Ill be reading the haunting season a friend gave me collection of spooky tales by people like Laura Purcell who i love more creepy than horror and also Never the bride by Paul Magrs set in Whitby not far from where we both grew up. I think is about a witch (dark comedy and a series) funny thing is when I started looking at Booktube Pauls was one of the first channels i came across and stuck around it wasnt until id had a massive book tidy up months later that i came across one of his books I thought his name sounded familiar lol a friends has read the full series and said they are really good. I did buy The Rats by James Herbert as couldn't remember if id read it it was an anniversary edition and most importantly less than 200 page its gory so im not sure . A few months ago I went through a phase of reading well reviewed books mainly thrillers and not enjoying them or being incredibly disappointed so i decided to mix things up by finally reading another genre i dont notmally bother with Romantic fiction. Started with another book had for a decade when I realised id had it signed its sort of Halloween in that its about a pychic wqs highly entertaining with emotional depth andna likeable female protagonistThe spirit willing the flesh weak JulienCohen.

What a great selection of stories you have to read! Anything set in Whitby would be ideal for the 'spooky' season ;)
